McLaren's Lando Norris headed Mercedes' George Russell at the end of a Friday practice day that left plenty of questions as to form for the Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix.

Norris was 0.009 seconds quicker than Russell, with the second McLaren of Oscar Piastri just 0.057secs off the pace.

Ferrari's Charles Leclerc was third fastest, 0.373secs adrift of Norris, with runaway championship leader Kimi Antonelli fourth.

But the Italian had traffic on his qualifying simulation lap in the Mercedes, so his headline lap time is unrepresentative.

And although Antonelli looked quick on his race-simulation runs later in the session, it was not possible to make a direct comparison with Russell as they were running different tyre compounds.

Racing Bulls did well to get Liam Lawson up and running after his stoppage early in the session.

For Williams, there is work to do to make Alex Albon's car driveable. After rookie Luke Browning failed to make it out for first practice, Albon remarked during his stint in FP2 he has "not driven a car so disconnected before".

Albon was near the bottom of the timesheets, with just Sergio Perez's Cadillac and the two Aston Martins of Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll below him.

    That's practice done in Barcelona.

McLaren's Lando Norris ends the day as the quickest car on track with a time of 1:15.426 on the soft compound.

George Russell is second, just 0.009 seconds away from Norris.

Oscar Piastri is third, the Ferrari of Charles Leclerc is fourth and Kimi Antonelli ends his sole practice session in fifth.

The weather is toasty in Spain today, so the tyres are going through it. Lewis Hamilton has noticed this, and he asks his engineer are the other drivers experiencing the same levels of degradation.

  9. Mercedes on toppublished at 17:00 BST 12 June

    Teams' standingsImage source, Getty Images

Mercedes are 79 points clear of second-placed Ferrari at the top of the constructors' championship after the two teams had a driver each on the podium in Monaco.

McLaren and Red Bull are settled in third and fourth respectively, while Alpine are now 15 points clear of Racing Bulls in the best-of-the-rest midfield battle.

Cadillac almost had their first point in Formula 1 with Sergio Perez's 10th place in the Principality but the Mexican was another in a long list of drivers who were penalised, so Aston Martin get that point through Fernando Alonso instead.

The Mercedes isn't feeling quite so smooth for Kimi Antonelli's first outing in Barcelona today. "Brake pedal feels horrible, so long," says the Italian teenager to his pit wall.

Kimi Antonelli's credit in the championship bank now stands at 66 points after his latest victory last time out in Monaco.

The Italian is also 68 points free of team-mate George Russell, who now has Lewis Hamilton in front of him after the seven-time world champion's back-to-back podiums in Canada and Monte Carlo.

Lando Norris' second DNF on the trot has dropped the reigning world champion below McLaren team-mate Oscar Piastri in the standings, while Pierre Gasly moves up to eighth, nine points clear of Isack Hadjar and 11 free of Racing Bulls' Liam Lawson.

The incident between Red Bull's Isack Hadjar and Mexican Sergio Perez at Turn Four has now been noted by race control.

Meanwhile, the race simulations are in full flow now. George Russell is the latest driver to run wide and on to the gravel, so has to make a dash back to the pits for some fresh ruber.

Isack Hadjar can join the very long list of Formula 1 drivers who have been annoyed by Sergio Perez's ability in traffic.

Racing Bulls' Arvid Lindblad is seventh fastest on the timesheets, one place higher than Audi's Gabriel Bortoleto, who seems happier in this session.

Isack Hadjar is 10th and as the Cadillac of Sergio Perez comes on the outside of his Red Bull, the two almost make contact. "Why did he do that?!" the Frenchman asks his pit wall.

Max Verstappen is sixth on the timesheets and has been doing some laps on the hard tyre. The Dutchman makes it to Turn 10 but the rear of his Red Bull is sliding around, so he calls base and asks to switch to a different compound, a softer compound.

  16. Postpublished at 16:47 BST 12 June

George Russell is also celebrating a landmark with Mercedes this weekend - his 100th grand prix with the team. A race win would be the icing on the Colin the Caterpillar cake he received from the Silver Arrows early on.

Russell has headed back out on the medium compound, while Lewis Hamilton is in the Ferrari garage, probably making a few adjustments.

Over at Ferrari, Lewis Hamilton has picked up the phone to his race engineer, 'Italian Bono' Carlo Santi, from P9 on the board.

It's not good news for the upgraded Scuderia, though, as seven-time world champion Hamilton says the rear of the car doesn't feel too good. Santi replies it's probably the wind which has picked up since first practice earlier on.

Lando Norris has a stat that he won't want to hear about - he is the driver who has completed the fewest grand prix racing laps this season. He didn't start in China and retired in Canada and Monaco.

  20. Norris goes quickestpublished at 16:39 BST 12 June

Lando Norris has suffered back-to-back DNFs, so the world champion is in the same group of George Russell - any points will do this weekend.

The world champion goes one better than McLaren team-mate Oscar Piastri and jumps above Russell on the timesheets with a 1:15.426.

Russell does imrpove on his latest flyer, but there's still a tiny gap between the top two drivers of 0.009 seconds.
