The soft tyres are popping across the timesheets now. Liam Lawson has joined Racing Bulls team-mate Arvid Lindblad with the team's upgrades this weekend and the New Zealander goes eighth on his first lfying lap.

Bob, we can't find which post that was on, but let us know and we'll give Red Bull a thumbs up.

Away from doggies doing what comes natural, Lando Norris has taken the soft C5 tyres for some qualifying simulations, and instantly goes to the top of the board with a time if 1:19.228, with Max Verstappen slotting into second on the compound, 0.193 behind.

The work is continuing over at Aston Martin on Lance Stroll's new-look car. The Canadian won't be coming out for any laps in this second session as his mechanics try and fix his rear suspension issues. Fernando Alonso is taking part, though, and the Spaniard is 14th on the timesheets.

Charles Leclerc needs a bit of run off at Turn 12 after a lock up so there's no improvement for the Monegasque driver on his latest flying lap on the medium tyre.

Turn One has been a thorn in the side of many drivers so far in Hungary and Isack Hadjar is the latest car to lock-up at the beginning of the lap and go off.

Kimi Antonelli, back in the car for FP2, needs some assistance from his pit wall. "I've nearly spun twice on braking. What is going on?" says the Italian teenager. Engineer Pete Bonnington suggests maybe boxing this lap, but Antonelli replies he keeps locking his rear tyres.

It sounds like both Mercedes drivers are struggling with the balance.

George Russell and Mercedes team-mate Kimi Antonelli are seventh and eighth on the timesheets as the wind seems to have picked up at the Hungaroring.

Lewis Hamilton leads the session with a time of 1:19.648 from Ferrari team-mate Charles Leclerc, with Max Verstappen third and world champion Lando Norris in fourth.

Alpine are level on 61 points with Racing Bulls in the constructors' championship, so it's a tight fight for that best-of-the-rest fifth place in the standings, but Pierre Gasly calls in to the French team to say his car feels worse than first practice.

Over at Mercedes, George Russell isn't feeling too happy about his car either, telling his pit wall the car feels "dreadful, so out of balance".

Kimi Antonelli, Oscar Piastri, Oliver Bearman, Franco Colapinto and Valtteri Bottas are starting their first session of the weekend after sitting out first practice to let the rookies take part.

Title leader Antonelli has bolted on the medium C4 tyre, with the hard the C3 and the soft the C5 at the Hungarian Grand Prix.

It's the two Ferrari boys who go straight to the top of the timesheets, though. Lewis Hamilton clocks a 1:19.648 on the yellow rubber to lead the field, 0.455 seconds better off than team-mate Charles Leclerc.

There was an incident between Carlos Sainz and Max Verstappen very early on in first practice when the Williams of Sainz got in the way of the Dutchman while on the racing line at Turn 12. Verstappen, who was on a flying lap, then slowed down and gestured at the Spaniard to vent his frustration.

Sainz said he was unaware Verstappen was approaching because his radio cable was disconnected.

Both drivers were flagged by the stewards for driving erratically and after an investigation, Verstappen has been cleared and Sainz has been handed a warning.

I'm hearing from Aston Martin that it's pretty unlikely that Lance Stroll will go out in this session at all.

There could be some bad blood between Red Bull and Ferrari this weekend, as little Leo Leclerc has marked his territory outside his rival's motorhome today. One to keep an eye on.

Charles Leclerc had locked in his quickest time before his car shut down in first practice, topping the opening hour from four-time world champion Max Verstappen by 0.484 seconds.

Ferrari team-mate Lewis Hamilton also flagged issues with his car, saying it felt "pretty bad". The seven-time world champion ended his hour in third spot, more than half a second off Leclerc's fastest marker.

Red Bull had both cars in the top four with Isack Hadjar beating the Mercedes of George Russell who was fifth. There was no Kimi Antonelli in this session, as the championship leader was one of five drivers to hand his car over to the rookies. His replacement Fred Vesti was the highest finisher of the rookies in seventh place.

Adrian Newey said the new Aston Martin had showed "promising results" in its first on-track session at the Hungarian Grand Prix.

Fernando Alonso set 13th fastest time in the session, 2.475 seconds from the pace set by Ferrari's Charles Leclerc, but team-mate Lance Stroll had a rear suspension failure.

Alonso's time is a significant step forward from the four-second margin that has generally separated Aston Martin from the pace so far this season.

Team boss Newey said: "Very early days in terms of understanding the new package. Provisional results are promising.

"We will have some more steps in Monza and Baku, so it is the first part of our planned upgrade. Very short on parts so being careful with it and trying to learn all about it."

Aston Martin's engine partner Honda will also take an upgraded power-unit to the next race, the Dutch Grand Prix, after Formula 1's four-week summer break.

The car is virtually new, only the front suspension, engine and gearbox are the same as at the last race in Belgium a week ago.

Even the chassis has been changed, with a significant amount of weight being taken out of it, needing a full re-homologation process from governing body the FIA.

So what went wrong with Lance Stroll's Aston Martin when his left rear suspension appeared to break in first practice? The team have brought 16 upgrades to the Hungarian Grand Prix and are hoping these can lift Stroll and team-mate Fernando Alonso into the midifeld fight instead of them dragging behind at the back of the grid.

"Everybody is feverishly trying to understand what went wrong and it is only once we have an understanding that we can comment on what we do next," Team boss Adrian Newey said after the session.

"The area involved is not what has been changed, so in that sense it was very unexpected."

Hello again, folks. The second hour of practice is just 15 minutes away at the Hungaroring, with our FP1 rookies making way for the full-time drivers to return to the track.

Charles Leclerc ended the first session top of the timesheets ahead of the Red Bull of Max Verstappen and his Ferrari team-mate Lewis Hamilton but his car suffered an issue at the end of practice, leaving him stranded in the pit lane.

Aston Martin are one of the main talking points this weekend with their much-anticipated upgraded car. Gremlins reared their ugly head for Lance Stroll's side of the garage, however, when the Canadian spun off the track with rear suspension issues. Stroll came to a stop on the exit of Turn Three and had to be ferried back to pits in a golf buggy.

Lance Stroll spun out with a rear suspension failure on the new Aston Martin as Ferrari's Charles Leclerc set the pace in first practice at the Hungarian Grand Prix.

Aston Martin have brought a virtually new car to this race for their first major upgrade of the season, and the rear suspension is one of many revised designs on it.

The left rear suspension appeared to break as he rounded Turn Three with about 20 minutes left of the session.

His team-mate Fernando Alonso was sent out as soon as the session restarted and set an apparently encouraging 13th fastest time.

That is a long way from where Aston Martin want to be, but it is a significant step forward from where they have been so far this season, having slumped to the back of the field.

That was an eventful opening practice session in Hungary, with the biggest headline probably Aston Martin's rear suspension issue for Lance Stroll.

The team are in the first phase of a major revamp and while team-mate Fernando Alonso finished P13 on the timesheets - so a lot higher up than previous weekends - Aston will have everything crossed that Stroll's problem was just a one-off.

Ferrari will also have one eye on reliability issues after Charles Leclerc came to a stop towards the end of the session.
