A really entertaining Championship game at Vicarage Road ended in a 2-2 draw courtesy of a stunning free-kick from Watford teenager Nestory Irankunda.

Supporters will be itching to see more of the Australian youngster after the international break.

He impressed throughout the game, especially in the second half, with great movement, skill and superb end product.

Irankunda now has two goals in successive league games.

After spells at Bayern Munich and Grasshoppers before joining The Hornets in the summer he comes into the league with high potential and excitement.

Irankunda can be one of the players to watch in the Championship this season, for sure, if he can continue this form for sure.

Watford are considering bids for defender Ryan Andrews as the summer transfer window nears its end, but no club has yet met their valuation.

Assistant sporting director Valon Behrami has also indicated that midfielders Tom Dele-Bashiru and Tom Ince could also be leaving Vicarage Road.

Andrews, 21, has made 86 league appearances for The Hornets, the most recent against Swansea City last Saturday when he was sent on as a 78th-minute substitute.

"We've had a few offers for Andrews, for example, and it's something we will take in consideration," Behrami told BBC Three Counties Radio.

"It's not a priority to sell Ryan but if he is going to leave for a better opportunity, for sure we are going to find a replacement."

"At the moment, no [the offers haven't been big enough], but the situation can change."

He added: "Tom Dele-Bashiru and Ince, we are trying to look at something for them that is ideal, too."

Watford are at home to Southampton on Saturday.

Watford team manager Gianmarco Ceresa has been been given a two-match touchline ban and fined £1,000 for verbally abusing a match official following their game against QPR on 16 August.

The 34-year-old, who has been at the club in various roles since 2017, admitted a Football Association misconduct charge.

The incident occurred in the tunnel area at the end of the match, which Watford won 2-1.

The Hornets continue their Championship campaign with a home fixture against Southampton on Saturday, which kicks off at 15:00 BST.

Watford and Southampton have both picked up four points from their opening three Championship matches ahead of their meeting at Vicarage Road on Saturday (15:00 BST).

Paulo Pezzolano's Hornets come into this one unbeaten in their past two Championship games, drawing 1-1 with Swansea City last weekend.

Saints saw their unbeaten start ended by a 2-1 home defeat to Stoke last Saturday, though Will Still's side picked up an impressive 3-0 win away to Norwich City in the EFL Cup on Tuesday.

    • Watford have won just two of their past 17 league games against Southampton (D7 L8), keeping just two clean sheets across that time.

    • Southampton are unbeaten across their past nine away league games against Watford (W4 D5), this after a return of just one win across their prior 16 such clashes with the Hornets (D6 L9).

    • Watford have won just two of their past 12 league games (D3 L7), though both of those victories have come at Vicarage Road, including their last fixture on home soil against QPR.

    • Southampton have won just two of their past 25 away league games (D5 L18), failing to score in two of their last three on the road.

    • Southampton have averaged the largest share of possession so far in the 2025-26 Championship (64.0%), however the Saints have faced more shots via fast breaks than any other team so far this season (6), half of which came against Stoke last time out.

  5. I've worked on free-kicks - Irankundapublished at 12:01 BST 26 August 2025

Nestory Irankunda: 'It's a special moment for me'

Australian Nestory Irankunda said his first goal for Watford might not have happened if team-mate Imran Louza had not been suspended.

The 19-year-old signing from Bayern Munich put the Hornets ahead with a brilliant free-kick in Saturday's 1-1 draw at Swansea City.

"I told the boys I felt confident taking it - but if Imran was there, I wouldn't have taken it, for sure," he told BBC Three Counties Radio.

"I've scored two free-kicks before this one and it's just something I've worked on throughout my four years of playing professional football."

Irankunda had to go off in the second half with a dead leg but it is not thought to be serious and he said he had worked hard after joining the club last month to ensure he was "up to speed" with the Championship.

"It's how I expected it to be. I came in a bit late for pre-season but I still put in the work to be able to play at the level and I think I've shown that in my first three or four games," he added.

"The Championship is a better league and I feel I've got more time to be on the ball because of the position I've been playing.

"It's always been a dream of mine to play in England. I pushed for it and I'm just happy to be here."

Watford are next in action at home against Southampton on Saturday.

  6. 'We should have won the game' - Pezzolanopublished at 19:14 BST 23 August 2025

    Media caption,

Pezzolano: 'We cannot drop these types of points'

Watford boss Paulo Pezzolano admitted his side's energy levels may have dropped in the closing stages as they had to settle for a point at Swansea.

Nestory Irankunda put The Hornets in front with a brilliant free-kick, but they were pegged back by Swansea's 82nd-minute equaliser.

"First half was really good, tactically and individually the players played really well," Pezzolano told BBC Three Counties Radio.

"We were very good for 65, 70 minutes and they couldn't find a way to harm us. Maybe in the last minutes we might have run out of energy a little bit, but the opponents also played a good game.

"The first half was very good, very solid. Maybe what leaves a bad taste in the mouth is that we cannot drop these types of points.

"Based on what we did in the first half and part of the second half, we should win this game."

Watford are at home to Southampton next Saturday in their final game before the international break.

Watford boss Paulo Pezzolano is determined not to let the absence of key player Imran Louza affect the team's performance as the midfielder serves out a three-match suspension.

Louza was sent off against Queens Park Rangers on Saturday following a challenge on Jonathan Varane. His ban begins when the Hornets visit Swansea City on Saturday.

"We know the quality that Imran has, he's an important player for the team," Pezzolano told the club website, external.

"But we will try and play our game the same as always. We have other team-mates who can do a really good job in that position."

The Swans have a decent run of home form behind them having won six of their past eight games at the Swansea.com Stadium, and Pezzolano is aware of the threats his men will face.

"We know Swansea is a very intense team, and a team which is very strong at home. The most important thing for us is to be fully committed," said Pezzolano.

Defender James Abankwah said the Hornets are prepared for a high-intensity clash on Saturday.

"We are expecting them to come out flying," he said.

"Obviously, they are playing at home, and they will press a lot.

"We know what we have got ahead of us. It's not going to be an easy game, but we'll be ready for the test."

Watford hope Belgian midfielder Pierre Dwomoh will be able to resume full training following the international break early next month.

Dwomoh made 11 appearances last season but has yet to feature this term because of a thigh problem.

The club say he has "stepped things up" with some running at their training ground and will continue to work on his fitness this weekend "with a view to returning after the international break".

Meanwhile, defender Mattie Pollock should be ready to train with the rest of the squad next week following a hamstring injury.

He suffered the injury during their pre-season game against Spanish side Deportivo and has since been doing strength and conditioning work.

Watford are away to Swansea City on Saturday in a lunchtime kick-off (12:30 BST).

After a mixed start to their Championship season, Swansea City will look to make it two wins on the bounce after beating Sheffield United 1-0 last time out.

Watford are in similar form and will hope to get their first away league win this season when they visit the Swans on Saturday (12:30 BST).

    • Swansea City have lost just one of their nine home league games against Watford in the second tier (W6 D2), winning this exact fixture 1-0 last season.

    • Watford have only lost one of their last four league games against Swansea City (W2 D1), and could win successive league games against them for the first time since September 2017.

    • Swansea City have won six of their last eight home league games (D1 L1). Since Alan Sheehan's first league game in charge of the Swans (22nd February), no current Championship side has accrued more points than them (27).

    • Watford have lost each of their previous six away league games, last losing more in succession outside the top-flight in December 1993 (7).

    • Only West Bromwich Albion's Isaac Price (3) has scored more Championship goals so far this season than Watford's Luca Kjerrumgaard (2) after his brace against QPR last time out.

Watford team manager Gianmarco Ceresa has been charged with misconduct by the FA following Saturday's 2-1 league win against Queens Park Rangers.

It is alleged Ceresa, who has been at the club in various roles since 2017, acted in an improper manner and used abusive words towards a match official in the tunnel at Vicarage Road after the final whistle.

Ceresa has until Friday, 22 August to provide a response.

Watford continue their Championship campaign with a trip to Swansea City on Saturday lunchtime [12:30 BST].

  11. Kjerrumgaard delighted by 'signature goal'published at 12:14 BST 18 August 2025

Watford's Luca Kjerrumgaard is not setting himself any scoring targets this season after opening his account for the club with a double against QPR.

The Hornets bounced back from an opening-day defeat by Charlton Athletic with Saturday's 2-1 win after Kjerrumgaard scored twice in the space of four first-half minutes.

The first, from Nestory Irankunda's pass, was a case of being there at the right moment, the Dane said, and the second was a header from Imran Louza's cross.

"That's the kind of thing I'm good at, to battle with the defender. It was one of my signature goals. It was a great assist by him (Louza), he's a really good guy and I'm happy we have this connection," Kjerrumgaard told BBC Three Counties Radio.

Kjerrumgaard said a slight change of formation, with Irankunda more central, was the key to their good start against QPR.

"In the first game, we were a bit too far from each other. We had a lot of long balls and I didn't really have anyone to lay it off to," the 6ft 4in striker added.

"It was hard because you felt like you were playing one against three all the time. It was better this way, but we will see what we do next."

Kjerrumgaard helped Odense win promotion to the Danish top-flight last season with 22 goals in 28 games, but asked about a possible target this term, he said: "I don't like to say that. The most important thing for me is we win if I do my best and work hard for the team - all these things are going to come in the end."

  12. 'Sensational Louza capable of moment of madness'published at 17:23 BST 17 August 2025

To say it was an afternoon of ups and downs for Imran Louza on Saturday may well be an understatement.

The Watford midfielder made his 100th appearance for the club against QPR, and for 90 minutes he was absolutely sensational.

His ability to dictate the tempo of the game will delight new manager Paulo Pezzolano, while the fans will have enjoyed his Maradona-esque spin on the halfway line, taking out three QPR players in the process.

But like Maradona, Louza possesses the occasional moment of madness.

In this case, a lunging, wayward tackle a couple of minutes before the end resulted in a needless straight red card, leaving his side clinging on.

Watford's 2024-25 player of the season may well still leave the club before the window closes.

But should he stay, expect plenty more of the same, both good and bad.

  13. 'The players needed this' - Pezzolanopublished at 18:48 BST 16 August 2025

    Media caption,

Pezzolano: 'It's important to build the process'

Paulo Pezzolano felt Watford's 2-1 victory against QPR was an important morale-booster for his players.

It was the Hornets' first win since Pezzolano took over as head coach this summer, when he replaced Tom Cleverley.

"I'm very happy, especially for the players because they needed this," Pezzolano told BBC Three Counties Radio.

"You need these victories to sustain the process. What's important to us is to build the process - for the players to understand what we want and how we're going to do it. That's a long process and it's a long season.

"In the second half, even though we had to go back a little bit, the opponent didn't have clear chances and we could have scored more goals.

"When we control the game we control the game, but if not then we have to know how to suffer."

Watford are away to Swansea next Saturday in their next Championship match.
