Southampton defenders Jack Stephens and Welington will miss Saturday's FA Cup fourth-round tie against Leicester, says Tonda Eckert.

The Saints boss also said defender Mads Roerslev could miss the rest of the season after having surgery on his Achilles.

Saints will take on Leicester for the second time in five days after a dramatic 4-3 comeback win at the King Power in the Championship on Tuesday.

Eckert hinted they will have to rotate their side for Saturday's game, with some key names missing out.

"Jack (Stephens) went in for a scan and we hope he is fine for next week, Wely (Welington) also went in for a scan [and] will miss Saturday," Eckert told the club., external

"Mads is going to go into surgery on Monday [for his Achilles], it looks like [the end of the season] at the moment so that's some tough news.

"We've also had some players on painkillers over the last weeks to make it through the games.

"It's a tough period of the season playing since November without a break. We want to go full tilt tomorrow but also make sure we don't risk players that are on the edge."

  3. Pick of the stats: Southampton v Leicester Citypublished at 11:21 GMT 13 February

These two sides know quite a lot about each other - with Tuesday's spectacular Championship victory for Southampton, coming from 3-0 down to win 4-3 at Leicester City, still fresh in the memory.

The Saints are going for a second treble over the Foxes, having also won both league games and an FA Cup tie in the 2007-2008 season.

    • This will be the eighth FA Cup tie between Southampton and Leicester City and first since the pair met at the semi-final stage in April 2021, with the Foxes winning 1-0 at Wembley that day before going on to lift the trophy with a final win over Chelsea.

    • Leicester City have faced Southampton twice before in the FA Cup fourth round, winning a reply 4-2 in January 1970 before losing 1-0 to the Saints at this stage in January 2006.

    • After losing their last home FA Cup game against Burnley 2-1 in January last year, Southampton will be hoping to avoid losing consecutive FA Cup games on home soil for the first time since January 2016.

    • Leicester have progressed from seven of their past nine FA Cup fourth-round ties since 2014-15 but did lose at this stage last season 2-1 against Manchester United. The Foxes were last eliminated at this stage in successive seasons in 2001-02 and 2002-03.

    • Leicester's Stephy Mavididi has scored in all three of his FA Cup appearances for the club, getting a goal and an assist in their 2-0 third-round win against Cheltenham this season.

  4. Saints keeper McCarthy out after wrist surgery published at 14:53 GMT 11 February

Southampton goalkeeper Alex McCarthy will be sidelined for at least a fortnight after having surgery on a wrist injury, says Saints boss Tonda Eckert.

The 36-year-old has made 10 appearances across all competitions for Saints so far this campaign, keeping three clean sheets.

Eckert said: "He (McCarthy) has a planned surgery, it was planned for yesterday (Monday) but got postponed.

"So he will be having the surgery tomorrow (Wednesday) on his wrist and will be out for a couple of weeks."

McCarthy has been at St Mary's since 2016, making 165 appearances for the club.

His most recent appearance came more than three months ago in the home defeat by Preston on 1 November.

  5. Important to celebrate wins like this - Charlespublished at 12:15 GMT 11 February

Shea Charles: 'The Championship is a crazy league'

Southampton midfielder Shea Charles believes it was "important to celebrate" after Saints came from three down to beat Leicester in the Championship.

Charles came up with just his second-ever goal for the club deep into injury time to snatch all three points at the King Power, curling a fine finish into the far corner from just inside the box.

"There were some celebrations in the changing rooms, deservedly so," Charles told BBC Radio Solent.

"You celebrate any win but I think it's really important to celebrate wins like this, especially for the team and togetherness in the group.

"I score goals like that plenty of times in training so it's about time that I started to put that into games."

Charles has recently returned to the side after a period out with injury that saw him miss 15 matches.

The midfielder came off the bench at half-time during Tuesday night's game, with all four of Saints' goals coming in the second 45 minutes of the match.

The win moves Tonda Eckert's side to within just one point of the top six - when he initially took over as interim boss Saints were 21st in the table but now sit ninth.

"We've been playing some good stuff recently and coming to a place like Leicester and leaving with three points is massive for us," Charles added.

"Hopefully we can push on in the next few games, focus now moves on to facing Leicester again [in the FA Cup] on Saturday."

  6. 'You don't have many nights like this' - Eckertpublished at 09:21 GMT 11 February

    Media caption,

Tonda Eckert: 'It was a great reaction from the whole team'

Southampton boss Tonda Eckert says it is "tough to find the right words" after his side produced an incredible comeback from 3-0 down to beat Leicester City 4-3 on Tuesday night.

"It was the decision of the boys at half-time," Eckert told BBC Radio Solent after the game.

"You can say whatever you want to say, in the end it is their decision to have a proper go and I would say that we did in the second half.

"We need to enjoy this. The season is so long and you don't have many nights like this so today we need to enjoy it and from tomorrow we will keep going.

"Allow me today not to look to far ahead. I think it is just one of those nights which is very special and we will try to enjoy it for the moment and what comes in the league against Charlton will come.

"We will be well prepared, hopefully play a different first half and continue the second half like we did here but for tonight it's just a moment to enjoy."

  7. Leicester fixture quirk may have impact - Eckertpublished at 14:53 GMT 9 February

Southampton boss Tonda Eckert says playing Leicester City twice in five days will not impact on their approach to Tuesday night's Championship game - but it may do for the FA Cup tie on Saturday.

Saints travel to the King Power Stadium in the league before welcoming the Foxes to St Mary's in the cup at the weekend.

When asked if the double-header changes how they prepare, Eckert said: "Maybe the second game. I think the first one, not so much.

"Obviously we need to watch a couple of images now with a change of manager just to get an idea if they have changed much because the last game was a red card after 15 minutes, so not too much to take away.

"But I think, in effect, it is more for the game on Saturday rather than the Tuesday one."

Eckert expects to make changes to the starting line-up against Leicester despite the 1-0 win over Watford at the weekend.

"I think the quality that we have at the moment is that we have a high availability," he added.

"I think that we have so much quality that at the moment not starting games but are ready to and we might need some fresh legs on Tuesday just for the fact it's a short break, two days only and it's an away game.

"So let's assess a couple of players over the next days but I would assume that we have a couple of changes in the starting eleven."

Southampton are 14th but just four points outside the play-off places after a run of three wins in their past four games - the other one was drawn.

  8. Pick of the stats: Leicester City v Southamptonpublished at 10:25 GMT 9 February

Leicester City and Southampton will put their opposing veins of form to the test when they meet at the King Power Stadium on Tuesday (19:45 GMT).

The Foxes have lost four of their past five Championship matches (D1) and a six point deduction means they only steer clear of the relegation zone on goal difference.

While Saints have won three of their past four (D1) and are now just four points shy of the play-off places.

    • Leicester City have won four of their last five home league games against Southampton (L1), winning 5-0 in April 2024 when the sides last met at the King Power Stadium in the Championship.

    • Southampton won 3-0 in the reverse fixture with Leicester City in November this season and could now complete a league double over the Foxes for the first time since the 2022-23 Premier League campaign – they last did so outside of the top-flight in 2007-08 in the Championship.

    • Leicester City have lost their last two home league games, last losing three in a row in the same Championship campaign in their final three home matches of the 2006-07 campaign under Nigel Worthington.

    • Southampton's 2-0 win at Stoke last month ended a run of six Championship away games without victory (D2 L4), and the Saints could win back-to-back league matches of the road for only the second time since the start of last season, previously doing so in November this season.

    • Leicester City are winless in each of their last 11 midweek league matches (Tue/Wed/Thu – D4 L7), since a 3-1 home win over West Ham in December 2024. Their last such win in the Championship was at home to Southampton in April 2024 (5-0).

  9. You have to cherish these moments - Larinpublished at 18:08 GMT 7 February

    Media caption,

Cyle Larin: 'To score and win is great'

Southampton goalscorer Cyle Larin highlighted the importance of "cherishing" the moment after scoring on his Saints debut.

The forward scored just three minutes after coming off the bench, heading the ball into the net after James Bree sent the ball in from a corner.

The St Mary's crowd were then singing his name as they celebrated his contribution that led to a big three points against Watford.

"It's a great feeling to score my first goal but it's also great to have a win with that," Larin told BBC Radio Solent.

"You have to cherish these moments. Since I came to Southampton, the staff and players have been very welcoming which has made it easier for me.

"When you feel good it translates on to the pitch. I've been a lot of places in my career and I think my experience helps me to adapt really quickly, I gel really well with the group.

"We should be higher in the table but that's football, if you go on a run in this league then that can change."

Saints are next in action when they travel away to Leicester City in midweek.

  10. Pick of the stats: Southampton v Watfordpublished at 09:03 GMT 5 February

Southampton will aim to continue their push for the play-offs when they welcome managerless Watford to St Mary's on Saturday (12:31 GMT).

Saints impressed in a 2-0 win at Stoke last Saturday to make it seven points from three games, the first of which was a 1-0 victory against Sheffield United in their most recent home game.

They sit 14th, seven points adrift of the play-off places with 16 games remaining, and four behind Watford, who lie eighth, despite being winless in six games in all competitions.

Javi Gracia left Vicarage Road in the wake of Saturday's 2-0 home defeat to Swansea but the Hornets earned a creditable goalless draw at Hull City on Tuesday to extend their unbeaten run on the road to five matches.

    • Southampton have lost just one of their past 10 league games against Watford (W4 D5), going down 2-1 at home in March 2022.

    • Watford have lost two of their past three away league games against Southampton (W1), as many as they had in their previous eight visits to St Mary's (W4 D2).

    • Southampton have lost just one of their eight home league games under Tonda Eckert (W5 D2), going down 2-1 against Hull City last month.

    • Watford are winless in their past five league games (D3 L2), scoring just two goals in that run. They had won their previous four in the Championship.

    • Southampton have scored 43 goals from an xG of 52 in the Championship this season, with only Blackburn (27 goals, 37.5 xG) underperforming their expected goals more than the Saints (-9).

Armstrong scored 43 goals in 174 appearances for the Saints after moving to St Mary's from Blackburn Rovers in 2021, and was part of the squad that earned Premier League promotion in 2024.

"It's been a rollercoaster of a journey for all of us, the highs and the lows," Armstrong wrote on Instagram.

"Thanks to the club for putting faith in me, the staff and players who have helped me along the way and the fans.

"I hope i have given you enough moments that you will remember, the goals, the celebrations, the misses, the wins and especially the play off final, what a day that was.

"As a fanbase you are knowledgeable and passionate but show compassion when we have faced difficult moments.

"The biggest honour given to me was I was able to captain this fantastic football club, not many people get that honour and I want you all to know I gave it my all everyday and every moment on and off the pitch and tried to represent you all in the best way I could.

"This isn't a goodbye as our paths will cross not only on the football pitch but off it.

"Our two children were born here and as they get older we will always bring them back, my family and I have a new chapter in our life to forge but our lives have been bettered by having this time in Southampton.

"See you all soon, the Armstrong's."
