Rangers v St Mirren: Pick of the stats Image source, SNS
    • Rangers are winless in their last four league meetings with St Mirren (D2 L2); only in November 1904 and August 1984 have they ever gone five without a win over the Buddies.

    • St Mirren won their last league visit to Rangers 2-0 in February last season, but have never won successive such trips, with this their 126th in league competition.

    • Rangers have only lost their final league game once in the last eight calendar years (W5 D2), going down 2-1 to Celtic in 2023. When facing a side other than Old Firm rivals Celtic to round off a year, the Gers have only lost their final league game once in the last 31 years (W26 D4), losing 4-0 to Hibernian in the Scottish Championship in 2014.

    • St Mirren have only won their final league game in one of the last five calendar years (D1 L3), beating Aberdeen 1-0 in 2023.

    • Only Alexandros Kyziridis (45) has created more chances in the Scottish Premiership this season than both Rangers' James Tavernier (36) and St Mirren's Declan John (30).

  3. Butland confident Rangers can challenge for titlepublished at 13:21 GMT 29 December 2025

    Jack ButlandImage source, SNS

Jack Butland believes the room for improvement at Rangers means they will be in the hunt for the Scottish Premiership title come the end of the season.

The 32-year-old goalkeeper was in inspired form in Saturday's 1-0 win over Motherwell, Thelo Aasgaard scoring the only goal of the game at Ibrox.

With leaders Hearts losing 3-2 to Hibernian and Celtic winning 4-2 at Livingston, Rangers are nine points behind the leaders with a game in hand and six behind their Old Firm rivals as they prepare to host St Mirren on Tuesday night.

"I think why I feel confident is because we're not as good as we can be yet," Butland said.

"If we were and felt like we were the finished article and everything was perfect and we were losing games and getting beaten by things and being hard done by, then it might be (different).

"But the fact we are getting better, still have a lot of room to get better, shows that we can close that gap and we can make it up.

"There's no doubt about that. But we have to keep striving to improve, all of us, keep getting better."

The spotlight was on Butland after a mistake last week when he allowed Hearts captain Lawrence Shankland to beat him at his near post as Danny Rohl's side lost 2-1 at Tynecastle.

The keeper admitted it was a new experience for him but said he was wise enough to deal with such a setback.

"I'm not sure I've conceded a goal like that second goal in my whole career - the scenario of it, the timing of it, the manner of it," he added.

"This game's always got, especially goalkeeping, a way of reminding you that you're human and it's difficult.

"It's one of those things, you have to just put it down to a moment and you have to move on."

  7. 'I'm here to enjoy that' - no fear factor as Aasgaard embraces pressurepublished at 12:41 GMT 28 December 2025

    Thelo AasgaardImage source, SNS

Thelo Aasgaard is embracing the "big responsibility" at Rangers as the attacking midfielder attempts to prove he was money well spent.

The 23-year-old Norway international has struggled to make his mark since signing from Luton in the summer for a reported fee of £3.5m, but marked his return to the starting line-up with the only goal in Saturday's win over Motherwell.

That was just a second goal in 26 Rangers outings for Aasgaard, who said: "It's been difficult at times but I try and see things in the bigger picture.

"And with big clubs comes a big responsibility and I'm here to enjoy that, not to fear that. Playing for such a big club just makes me proud and I just want to do well.

"I don't think about any anything negative. I always assess my performances and I don't think it was my best either but I think if I come up with moments like this, then I'll take it and then it's something to build on.

"I'm desperate to do well for this club so, just try and stay humble and work as hard as I can.

"I'm always trying to be a better player. I don't like to set limits, I always try to strive for more. I'm working hard with the guys in the in the backroom, trying to try to improve.

"I think later on in my career, I'll be really thankful for this. As the months have gone on, I've learned to deal with big pressure, maybe more than I have earlier on in my career, so I'm thankful for it and I think it'll serve me well, not only in the next few months, but even later in my career."

  8. 'Room for improvement' as 'disjointed' Rangers edge out Wellpublished at 10:17 GMT 28 December 2025

    Your views

We asked for your views after Rangers beat Motherwell 1-0 at Ibrox to reclaim third place in the Premiership.

Here's what some of you said:

Brian: Danny Rohl has done a great job with the players he has inherited, but everybody knows we will only get away with winning by the odd goal for so long. The squad isn't good enough.

Robert: Although we got the job done, we still look disjointed, passing going astray and an £8m striker who can't control the ball just isn't good enough.

Allan: Motherwell played very well to begin with, but after a tactical change Rangers got more into the game and deserved to win it. Being more clinical in front of goal would have made the margin of victory much better, but both goalkeepers were exceptional. A valuable three points collected.

Derek: Better all-round performance, but still room for a lot of improvement. Why don't we play strikers at Ibrox? As for the chances missed at the end, that could have cost us dearly. Ball distribution from the back is still slow and dangerous. Danny Rohl still needs someone on his coaching staff that understands the Scottish game.

Duncan: Derek Johnstone's half-time message says it all. We need more Rangers-minded people both on and off the pitch. Is Rohl's ego too big to appoint an ex-player to his coaching staff? Of the names mentioned Neil McCann would be an excellent choice with his experience as a Rangers player and has great tactical nous.

Robert: What's clear is Rangers need a goalscorer up front. 25 goals from 18 games is nowhere near good enough. Wish we still had Cyriel Dessers up there. He wasn't everybody's cup of tea but he knew where the goals were. Youssef Chermiti is definitely not the answer.

  10. Rangers 1-0 Motherwell: What Rohl saidpublished at 17:26 GMT 27 December 2025

    Danny RohlImage source, SNS

Rangers head coach Danny Rohl: "I'm very happy for the group. Except for the first 15 minutes we were good in the game, especially at the end we had so many chances we had to close the game.

"After the Hearts game you can criticise him [Jack Butland] but today he showed why I trust him so much. It was an outstanding performances, it's important for a clean sheet.

"It's about the next game and the next three points.

"It's a long, long way, a long journey and a lot of games to go. It's about the next challenge we have.

"We are still in the race but a lot of games to go. I think after the Hearts defeat the question was different, today we have this question. I understand but it's about the next game and the next three points."

  14. Rohl won't 'close eyes' to Scottish marketpublished at 15:25 GMT 26 December 2025

    Danny RohlImage source, SNS

Rangers head coach Danny Rohl is open to signing players from the Scottish market in January.

And the German says his relationship with chairman Andrew Cavenagh makes him feel "very positive" about what the transfer window holds for the club.

With his side having fallen 12 points behind Premiership leaders Hearts following last weekend's defeat at Tynecastle, Rohl is working to bolster his squad next month.

Rangers' only domestic signings in the past 18 months were midfielders Lyall Cameron and Connor Barron from Dundee and Aberdeen respectively.

"We should not close our eyes to the Scottish market," said Rohl.

"I think you have players that have experience here in this league. They know what it means to play against other teams. They know what it means to play for Rangers or against Rangers.

"I'm totally open. For me, it's not about the market. It's really about in which position the players can help us."

Rohl says he and Cavanagh share a vision for the future of the club.

"We agree that we have a lot of work to do, but I'm very positive," he said.

"We have a clear idea of what we want to do and what we want to see in the future from our team.

"We have to do everything right. But I'm very positive. It's about results on the one side. It's about performance and it's about the direction we want to go.

"And I feel that all these things are going in the direction we want to see."

  15. 'Big learning curve' on and off the pitch for Moore at Rangerspublished at 10:53 GMT 26 December 2025

    David Currie
    BBC Sport Scotland Senior Reporter

    Mikey MooreImage source, SNS

Mikey Moore won't forget 2025 in a hurry. He won a Europa League winner's medal with Tottenham, joined Rangers on loan - and learned to cook.

The 18-year-old was on the bench in Spurs' 1-0 win over Manchester United in the Europa final In Bilbao. Three months later he made his Rangers debut against Alloa in the Premier Sports Cup.

"It's been a massive learning year for me, personally," said the England youth international. "It's been a top year of playing my first full year in football."

Moore has made 21 appearances for Rangers, scoring twice, but admits he struggled to make an impact initially.

"It started tough," he said. "It's got better lately, so for me personally, mentally, physically, technically, it's been massive for me, it's helped me so much.

"This club's been huge for my development. Before I came here I knew exactly what kind of pressure it would be, what I was coming into, so I was prepared for it. I think when I came, I thought I knew.

"This is the first time I've ever moved away from home. I've had to try and cook for myself, which has been a disaster. I'll try my best anyway. Off the pitch, it's been just as big of a learning curve as on the pitch."

Moore feels he's now ready to make a greater contribution as Rangers strive to get their title campaign back on track following the defeat by Hearts which left them 12 points behind the league leaders.

Danny Rohl's men attempt to end Motherwell's unbeaten league run when the Steelmen visit Ibrox on Saturday.

"We've got big games coming up where we can start to close the gap again," Moore said.

"We need leaders and people to drive it. I think I can drive with my performances on the pitch. In the last few weeks I've felt more responsibility in myself to go and help the team going forward.

"I've got that belief in myself that I can be that person to try and drive us on the pitch. I think the more we get that, the more we'll win games and the more we'll pick up points."

If Moore wasn't fully aware of what life is like as a Rangers player when he signed up, he knows now.

"My girlfriend's whole family are Rangers fans," he added. "I get a message off my girlfriend's dad all the time battering me if we lose, if we win. He's loving me.

"I understand what it means to be here. I think I've had that support from the people in my family as well. You do need that, especially when you're going through some hard times.

"My family have been a massive help for me. All of a sudden they've started to really build a relationship with the club. My mum's all of a sudden the biggest Rangers fan. I love it."

    • Rangers have won just one of their past five league meetings with Motherwell (D2 L2), going winless in their latest three (D2 L1) since a 2-1 victory in August 2024. Never before have the Ibrox club gone four games without a league win against the Steelmen.

    • Motherwell have won two of their past three away league games at Rangers (L1), as many as their previous 45 beforehand (W2 D7 L36). They are looking to win successive such visits for the first time in their history, with this their 141st trip.

    • Rangers have won three of their four home league games under Danny Rohl (D1), after only winning two of their previous 10 prior to his arrival (D4 L4).

    • Rangers' James Tavernier has been directly involved in 18 goals in 27 Scottish Premiership appearances against Motherwell (9 goals, 9 assists), only having a hand in more against St Johnstone (20 – 8 goals, 12 assists) and Ross County (19 – 8 goals, 11 assists) in the competition.

    • Motherwell's Tawanda Maswanhise - who misses out at Ibrox because he is playing at the Africa Cup of Nations - has scored more goals (8) than any other player aged 23 or younger in the Scottish Premiership this season. He also has the joint-most goal involvements (9 – 8 goals, 1 assist) by players 23 or under (level with Kieron Bowie).

    John SouttarImage source, SNS

John Souttar has returned to Rangers training this week as Danny Rohl looks to bolster his defensive options.

The centre-back has missed the last eight games with a muscle injury and has left Rohl with limited options in defence with Derek Cornelius also sidelined and Nasser Djiga now away on Africa Cup of Nations duty.

The 29-year-old is unlikely to be available for Saturday's visit of Motherwell but could be ready for their midweek game against St Mirren.

"John was good yesterday [Monday]," Rohl said.

"He trained for the first time as part of the session. Let's see what it means today and tomorrow, but it's a huge step.

"I'm not sure if it's enough for the weekend, but with the games coming now, it helps.

"Could be [ready for St Mirren], yeah. I think when you play every three days, then you have to see.

"But the big step was yesterday, to come back to a training session. He looks good, he looks fit, this is great.

"All the other players, not really new information. Oli [Antman] makes steps forward, Nedim's [Bajrami] scan was positive, but it needs a couple more days.

"Derek Cornelius is a long term, I think it is maybe February."

Rangers host a high-flying Motherwell on Saturday with third place in the Premiership table at stake.

The Ibrox club are a point behind Motherwell with a game in hand on Jens Berthel Askou's side.

"A lot of good results, a lot of good points [for Motherwell] but it will be a good game," Rohl added.

"I think we will have a lot of supporters. It's Christmas, let's try to create a good energy in the stadium and a togetherness.

"We have to deliver a proper fight, a good performance on the pitch and take the next results and then we can look to the next game.

"We didn't take the result at the weekend [against Hearts] and I was of the belief that if we took the right result, the stadium will be on fire. Hopefully we can do this now as well.

"It's about us on the pitch, but also on the stands to bring this positive emotional level back."
