  1. 'Perfect appointment' - fan views as McInnes becomes Rangers managerpublished at 11:17 BST 18 June

    Your opinions

Rangers fans, we asked for your views on the departure of Danny Rohl and appointment of Derek McInnes as manager.

Here's what some of you said:

Heather: A true, dyed in the wool Rangers man. McInnes is in the mould of the great Walter Smith. I haven't been this excited for a Rangers team or season in years. Bring on the 2026/27 season.

Kenneth: Well he won't last long at Rangers as it's a different club, team and a different set of expectations. Rangers are expected to win, Hearts try to play to win. I doubt he will last till Christmas. He will be sacked because it's Rangers.

Matthew: Perfect appointment. He feels like the exact thing we've been missing, and his Scottish and Rangers identity is something we've been crying out for. He has proven in Scottish football that he can get the best out of his players, and that he is tactically astute. The most optimistic I've been in a long time.

John: Thanks to Rohl for his work and efforts. He appeared to be a good man and wish him well on his development. We now have a Scottish manager and a Rangers man. I personally would like to see a squad with a heavy Scottish core, the difficulty is offloading those who are surplus to our requirements. If this can be done, we will have a trimmer squad and the means to focus expenditure. Cannot wait.

Michael: Definitely the right man for the job and hopefully an appointment the fans will be patient with. I think he will hit the ground running but with so many squad changes needed, there could still be early issues but McInnes will get it right given a few transfer windows

Dave: The third manager in 12 months, time for someone to be given a good run at it. Lower the expectations of instant success and build a good team. Only then can Rangers hope to make a realistic challenge. I think McInnes could be the man to do it.

  2. Will new Rangers boss McInnes move for Devlin?published at 09:45 BST 18 June

With former Hearts boss Derek McInnes now in situ as Rangers head coach, he already knows he will be working with one familiar face.

Lawrence Shankland agreed to join Rangers before flying out with Scotland for the World Cup.

But could McInnes bring another Tynecastle stalwart to Ibrox with him in the shape of Cammy Devlin?

The Australia midfielder, 28, is also at the World Cup but is out of contract at Hearts.

When the Edinburgh club announced a list of departures at the end of last season, Devlin and similarly out of contract goalkeeper Craig Gordon were not among them, signalling they have not given up on retaining the pair.

Since joining Hearts in 2021, Devlin has made 171 club appearances, scoring eight times. All five of his senior international appearances so far came while he was with Hearts.

Devlin has been linked with a move to Major League Soccer but McInnes' switch to Ibrox will attract speculation about the Australian following his former manager. The midfielder knows the Scottish Premiership well and would offer Rangers a free transfer at a time when the Ibrox club have lost a clutch of players at the end of their loan deals.

Derek McInnes joined Rangers as a player in the mid-1990s from Greenock Morton, making his debut in a 1-0 Scottish Premier Division win over Partick Thistle at Ibrox on 9 December 1995.

That day, the midfielder wore the number eight jersey usually sported by Paul Gascoigne, who was unavailable for that particular match.

Internationals like Gascoigne, Ian Ferguson and Stuart McCall stood between McInnes and regular game time in Walter Smith's side and the competition for places grew with the likes of Jorg Albertz and Jonas Thern arriving in subsequent years and the emergence of Barry Ferguson.

McInnes helped Rangers win the league in his debut season and the following campaign.

All four of his Rangers goals came in the 1996-97 season, including a vital strike in a Champions League qualifier against Alania Vladikavkaz. The others came in Rangers' successful League Cup campaign in ties against Ayr United and Dunfermline Athletic and one versus Hearts in the league.

With Dick Advocaat's arrival as manager in 1998 came more competition for places in midfield, such as Giovanni van Bronckhorst and later Claudio Reyna, with Ferguson now established as a first-team player.

McInnes spent time on loan at Stockport County in 1998 but was a surprise inclusion in Rangers' 1999 Scottish Cup final win over Celtic as Advocaat's side won the domestic treble.

A similar event ensued during the following season's Champions League campaign as McInnes took the field in a 4-1 home win over PSV Eindhoven.

He soon joined Toulouse on loan and in 2000 moved to West Bromwich Albion. All in all, McInnes made 52 Rangers appearances, scoring four times, and picked up medals for the 1996-97 Scottish Premier Division title win and the 1999 Scottish Cup success.

Danny Rohl thanked Rangers after leaving the Scottish Premiership outfit for Red Bull Salzburg and taking his first training session with the Austrian club.

The German, 37, departed Ibrox after eight months, having previously managed Sheffield Wednesday. Derek McInnes was appointed Rangers manager shortly after Rohl's departure was announced.

"I've been here several times in the past and know Salzburg well – the club has always stood for attacking, courageous football," Rohl said at his first news conference with RB Salzburg.

"That's precisely the path we want to take. We want to return to the identity that distinguished the club for so many years.

"I have to also thank Rangers, who agreed to this move."

Sporting director Marcus Mann commented: "It's true that we had agreed with Danny a week ago.

"A few points came up that needed clarification, which is why the matter dragged on a bit. We certainly would have liked to finalise it a few days earlier but the important thing is that it worked out. Sometimes you can have different opinions on things – those have now been resolved."

  6. 'Right time' for McInnes as he takes on Rangers 'demands'published at 20:25 BST 17 June

New Rangers manager Derek McInnes says the club's fans "rightfully have high expectations".

McInnes has been appointed on a three-year deal, returning to Ibrox 26 years after he left as a player.

"It is a real honour to become the manager of Rangers Football Club," he told club media.

"It is no secret that I grew up a Rangers supporter and I am convinced this is the right time to take on this prestigious role.

"The demands here are clear and our supporters rightfully have high expectations. It is up to me, my staff and my players to meet those expectations and have this club performing as it should."

Alan Archibald and Paul Sheerin move from Hearts to Rangers with McInnes and the new backroom team also includes Craig Clark.

"There is a lot of hard work ahead but already the preparations have begun, and I am looking forward to meeting the current squad in the coming weeks and welcoming some new faces."

Rangers chairman Andrew Cavenagh added: "I am delighted to welcome Derek to Rangers. He is someone we have always rated highly, and we believe he is exactly what this club needs at this moment in time.

"His deep Scottish and Rangers experience are important for us. He knows how to win in this league, and he is coming off an extremely strong season with Hearts."

  7. McInnes joins Rangers from Hearts - share your thoughtspublished at 19:49 BST 17 June

    Have your say

Derek McInnes has swapped the Hearts hotseat for Rangers, taking charge at Ibrox on a three-year contract.

The 54-year-old steered Hearts to within minutes of the title in his solitary season at the Tynecastle helm.

He replaces Danny Rohl, who has left Rangers to take the reins at Red Bull Salzburg.

Rangers fans, what do you make of McInnes' appointment? Is the the right man for the job? Tell us here.

  8. How does new Rangers boss McInnes' record stack up?published at 19:48 BST 17 June

Derek McInnes and some stats of his record last seasonImage source, SNS

Derek McInnes moves to Rangers after leading Hearts to their strongest season in the Scottish Premiership era.

The 80 points, which was two short of champions Celtic, bettered any of the full seasons McInnes had in charge of Aberdeen (68, 75, 71, 76, 73, 67).

Hearts' only previous second-placed finish in the Scottish top flight in the 2000s came in 2006 and the 2025-26 campaign was only the 11th in the post-war era in which Hearts finished in the top two.

Under McInnes last term, Hearts won five and drew one of their games against Celtic and Rangers, losing to each side once. Hearts and Rangers had the joint highest goal difference of 33.

Their goals for column of 67 was the club's highest in the Premiership era and only the second time since 2013 that their goals scored exceeded 60.

Goals against reached a new low of 34 in the Premiership era, beating a previous low of 39.

At Rangers, their points tallies since last winning the Premiership in 2021 have been 89, 92, 85, 75 and 72. Celtic have won the title five years running with final points tallies of 93, 99, 93, 92, 82.

Hence, if McInnes is to emulate Steven Gerrard and succeed where Giovanni van Bronckhorst, Michael Beale, Philippe Clement and Danny Rohl failed, he will likely have to post at least into the 90s to stand a chance of winning the Premiership.

Last season, McInnes points per game average stood at 2.11. To make 90 at Rangers in season 2026-27, his points average would have to increase to 2.39, a 12.25% increase.

  9. Analysis: Rohl never a natural fit?published at 12:04 BST 17 June

    Tom English

    Danny Rohl

Rohl's exit is slightly embarrassing for Cavenagh as he's gone out on a limb to defend the manager in the face of criticism from fans.

I wonder if Rohl was ever really happy at Rangers. He never gave the impression he was totally at ease with the league.

I think the club have done everything to try to put him at ease and they gave him money to spend, but I'm not sure he's ever been a natural fit for Scottish football.

For Rangers, McInnes is a no-brainer, an obvious call.

He's very experienced, a gnarled pro in Scotland, there's nothing he doesn't know about this league. His worth ethic is through the roof.

He would be a very good fit for Rangers.

  10. How will Rohl be remembered after Rangers exit?published at 12:01 BST 17 June

Last month, Danny Rohl said he was "100% convinced" he would remain as Rangers manager for the new season despite a hugely disappointing end to the previous campaign.

And yet, he has left to become RB Salzburg boss with Hearts head coach Derek McInnes widely expected to take over.

The German leaves Ibrox having failed to win a trophy in his eight-month stay and abiding memories of his tenure will be of a timid end to the Premiership season.

Rohl's side went into the split just one point behind leaders Hearts, but ultimately finished third after four defeats in their final five matches of the season.

That, combined with defeats by rivals Celtic in both domestic cups, meant the season was unquestionably a failure despite substantial investment in the transfer market.

Admittedly, lots of that money was spent before Rohl's arrival under previous head coach Russell Martin and sporting director Kevin Thelwell, but Ryan Naderi, Tochi Chukwuani, Tuur Rommens and Andreas Skov Olsen were all brought in under Rohl's watch.

And despite the faith shown in Rohl, Rangers collapsed when it mattered and the ire from the club's supporters was obvious as their title tilt faltered.

There is now a familiar feel to this summer as Rangers prepare for yet another rebuild under yet another new head coach.

Rohl will be remembered as a coach who turned things around after Rangers started the season so slowly under Martin, but as with several before him, he failed to truly challenge Celtic's domestic dominance.

Indeed, it was his likely successor McInnes who did that most effectively, albeit falling at the final hurdle.

Rangers have confirmed the departure of head coach Danny Rohl, who has joined Austrian outfit Red Bull Salzburg after less than a year at Ibrox.

  15. Rangers fans will welcome McInnes move - Hallidaypublished at 14:02 BST 15 June

Derek McInnes and Danny RohlImage source, SNS

Andy Halliday believes supporters of his former club, Rangers, will be in favour of the prospect of Derek McInnes coming in to replace head coach Danny Rohl.

German Rohl has been heavily linked with RB Salzburg and Hearts' McInnes with Rangers.

McInnes played for Rangers in the late 1990s and joined Hearts - his fifth club as a manager - last summer, leading the Tynecastle side to a runners-up place in the Scottish Premiership.

And Halliday told the BBC's Scottish Football Podcast: "If you offered me that Rangers would make a profit and swap their manager from Danny Rohl to Derek McInnes, I don't think there's a Rangers fan in world football that wouldn't have taken it.

"Danny was going to be under immense pressure at the start of the season and it would have been quite possible that Rangers would have had to pay money to relieve him from his duties very early on into the season.

"It's so happened that they've managed to make a profit and get another manager under their belt and for me they're bringing in a manager, not a coach, not a young promising coach, they're bringing in a manager with a proven track record in Scottish football.

"Derek McInnes ticks a lot of boxes for Rangers. It's exciting times."

On McInnes' impact at Hearts and the influence of investor Tony Bloom, former Celtic and Hibernian player Scott Allan said: "That just gives Tony Bloom the bit between his teeth. That makes him even more determined.

"To be right in amongst it and in the Scottish Premiership this season, he's felt the atmosphere of the ground.

"The key word was resilience, that is something Hearts showed in abundance as a team first and foremost last year.

"I feel Tony Bloom goes out and goes, 'OK, what have we got next?' And he'll look to really strengthen Hearts this year."

  17. McInnes a good fit to rebuild Rangers - McPhersonpublished at 14:13 BST 14 June

Will Hearts head coach Derek McInnes be in charge at Rangers next season?Image source, SNS

Derek McInnes is a logical appointment who will thrive on the challenge of rebuilding Rangers, says Dave McPherson.

The Hearts head coach is being strongly linked with a move to Ibrox, with Danny Rohl expected to depart for RB Salzburg.

"Rangers need a bit of stability," said former Scotland defender McPherson, who had two spells with the club, along with two stints with Hearts.

"Derek's proved – not just at Hearts, but in previous clubs he's been at – that he can build a good team, get the best out of players, and get results, and that's what Rangers need at the moment.

"He'd have been my choice as Rangers manager way back, but I think he's proved even more at Hearts how good a manager he is.

"Rangers are there to be rebuilt and I think it's a good time for a Scottish manager and a guy that's played for Rangers to go in there and say, 'right, I can start from the bottom up and build something big here'.

"He's going to have some funds behind him but it will still come down to recruitment. You have to recruit the right players, and I think that's where Rangers have failed in the past.

"If you think of the job that was done at Hearts last year, it was a fantastic set-up, and everybody wanted to play for Hearts. He got the best out of the players, and I think if he can transfer that to the Rangers job, then it'll be a good Rangers team to watch next season."

McInnes moved to Tynecastle from Kilmarnock last summer, with Hearts going so close to a first title in 66 years.

Defeat at Celtic Park on the final day left the Edinburgh side two points behind the defending champions and eight points in front of Rangers.

Hearts captain Lawrence Shankland has already made the switch from Tynecastle to Ibrox and McInnes taking the same path would be "a massive blow", according to McPherson, although he is confident the club is can cope without the key duo.

"I don't have any idea who they're going to go for, but there's big shoes to fill there," he said.

"Having spoken to a lot of people at Hearts last season, they've got a really good set-up. They're built in such a way that if they do lose somebody, then they've got things in the background that's going to be able to replace a player or a manager, so I've got every confidence in Hearts doing really, really well next year again."
