  1. Tonali and Livramento out? Tomori in? Who should Magpies buy and sell?published at 18:40 BST 6 May

We asked for your views on one player you would be prepared to see leave Newcastle in the summer and a couple of names who would be realistic targets for Eddie Howe's side.

We got quite a few responses and have already posted some of them further down the page or here. Scroll down and you'll also find a video featuring debate on how many new faces may be needed.

Colin: For me, the thing this year is how do we want to play? What's the style/the focus? Players like Joelinton are monumental athletes, but are they holding us back from a particular style of play? Defining summer for Howe and co. I feel. For me, personally, I'd love to see some more creativity - and - dare I say it, just some 'good football'!

Duncan: I think that Tino Livramento and Anthony Gordon will go though, I don't actively want either of them out. Sandro Tonali seems to want to go home but nobody in Italy can afford him - maybe there's a swap deal to be done? Gut feel says we won't get James Trafford but I'd like him - not sure who else in goal. I like William Osula up front and out on the right-wing. I'd prefer to keep him for both roles over Anthony Elanga and Yoane Wissa, who really haven't done enough. If we were to play two up front then a Nick Woltemade and Osula pairing would be good, but not Woltemade as a lone nine or as a main forward. We need to know what Eddie's vision is, but we can't keep playing at 100 miles per hour every game.

Peter: If Tonali wants to go, sell him and get Elliot Anderson back as a direct replacement. Tino doesn't look the same player as last season so sell and play Lewis Miley (if fit!) there. Striker is a priority but not sure who is a realistic target. Fikayo Tomori would be a good acquisition to replace Sven Botman as first choice centre-back. If we can't keep Gordon or we have to sell him then Mateus Mane from Wolves would be a great player to develop as a replacement.

Alex: If Gordon wants to go, get the deal done quick. Let's not let it linger on like Alexander Isak did. Wouldn't take Aaron Ramsdale as permanent so would need a first choice goalkeeper. We need a replacement right-back for Kieran Trippier leaving and a back-up left-back. We also need a back-up centre-back as we have Fabian Schar and Dan Burn aging, possibly Schar going and Jamaal Lascelles was never replaced. Then just replace anyone who goes.

  2. 'Now is one of the best times to pick up an injury' - Andersonpublished at 18:11 BST 6 May

The "real bad luck" continues for Lewis Miley, says ex-defender John Anderson, after it was confirmed the Newcastle United midfielder will not play again this season after fracturing his right fibula in training on Tuesday.

The academy graduate, who turned 20 last week, had only returned to action in Newcastle's 2-1 defeat to Crystal Palace last month, following a two-month spell on the sidelines with a dead leg.

Anderson reacted to the news on BBC Radio Newcastle, stating: "The young boy has had some real bad luck, both in terms of being out for the length of time he just was and in terms of picking up this injury in training.

"But I suppose now is one of the best times to pick up an injury like that, if there ever was a 'best time', because it will give him all of summer to recover.

"It is a shame for him though, it really is. We wish him a speedy recovery."

Miley is set to travel to a specialist consultant on Wednesday before continuing his rehabilitation with the club's medical team, in the hope of a return for pre-season.

  3. Stones? Watkins? Palhinha? Who should Magpies buy and sell?published at 12:15 BST 6 May

We asked for your views on one player you would be prepared to see leave Newcastle in the summer and a couple of names who would be realistic targets for Eddie Howe's side.

Here are some of your comments:

Mark: Carl Rushworth has been excellent at Coventry and on other loans from Brighton. He is such a great goalkeeper and he has a future with England. I'm happy to lose Nick Pope and any of our other goalkeepers.

James: Losing Kieran Trippier this summer will be a big loss, amid Jamaal Lascelles leaving fairly recently and a general need for leaders to pull together, what appears to be, a fragmented and changing side. Can we nab John Stones or a similarly experienced defender to lead from the rear of the pitch? I would love to see it.

David: Unfortunately, Yoane Wissa has been unable to recreate his Brentford scoring form. The reason why? Our playing system is different and he is too small to be an out-and-out target-man as a number nine, which is what we need up front. Ollie Watkins, or a player like him, would be good. I'm sure talented Nick Woltemade could be used to feed and play off such a player. Watkins' old colleague Jacob Ramsey would also link up well with him, I'm sure, if one of our other midfielders were to depart this summer.

Matt: Gordon and Livramento can go. Hope Tonali stays. Need Bruno to stay, alongside Hall, Thiaw, Ramsey and Miley. That's the core to build on. For squad cost ratio rules, move on Willock, Joelinton and Murphy. We need to bring in young, high-ceiling players, raise the technical floor, and have alternative creativity to Bruno. I'd also bring in a new coach specialising in controlled possession and breaking down low blocks. We'll still have plenty of Premier League experience but we need the mentality to be right.

Matt's list of possible recruits included the likes of Michael Kayode (Brentford), Giorgio Scalvini (Atalanta), James Trafford (Man City), Mike Godts (Ajax), Breno Bidon (Corinthians) and Antonio Nusa (RB Leipzig).

Steve: Absolutely astonishing for some to suggest that Joelinton should be moved on, he's one of our best players and has been for years. Most will be happy to see Gordon go, though I think talk of him downing tools is wide of the mark. I'd like to see us go in for Trafford again, Watkins would be great but I doubt we could get him. William Gomes would be an ideal signing to finally strengthen the wings. If Tonali goes I would try to poach Palhinha.

Ross: If West Ham go down, I'd look at Mavropanos, Summerville and maybe Malick Diouf. I don't think Bowen would leave London. Think Tottenham will escape but I rate Gallagher. I'd love to sign Igor Thiago, but not sure we'd get him. Maybe offer Wissa back in exchange but not sure Brentford fans would want that!

  4. 'I'm still not sure who will pay the money for Tonali'published at 09:31 BST 6 May

    Media caption,

On BBC Radio Newcastle's Total Sport show, Newcastle United correspondent for The Athletic Chris Waugh said: "If Anthony Gordon does go, and other players do go, they're probably going to be replaced by younger players who may have a high ceiling, but right now you can't guarantee that they're going to suddenly deliver at the start of next season.

"I think if you'd asked me a few weeks ago, I would have said I would expect Tino Livramento to go. I think the chances of that probably diminished given the number of injuries he's had.

"I think clubs are maybe a little bit more concerned about spending the money it would take to get him.

"Sandro Tonali, I think there's a feeling from somewhere around Newcastle that he probably will go. I'm still not sure who will pay the money for him, but it'll easily be double figures when you combine the ins and outs and it could go into medium double figures with that.

"Part of the issue with last summer was not just what Newcastle actually did, and you can argue whether that was successful or not and largely most people say not.

"A large part of the issue is what they didn't do and there are things which have just been deferred because they had already gone five windows without and strengthened the first XI.

"They couldn't do everything they wanted to do last summer, so then you've had Kieran Trippier stay another year. Fabian Schar is still here, obviously being injured but he's still a big part of the team, but Newcastle really want to refresh so many of these areas.

"So I'd say, ideally, if you were going over these two windows, Newcastle would probably change about 10 members of the squad, but I can't see that happening in one summer. I think you're probably talking between six and eight [players] is what's going to happen, and probably three or four of those in the first XI itself."

  5. Miley breaks leg in trainingpublished at 18:32 BST 5 May

    Lewis MileyImage source, Getty Images

Newcastle United midfielder Lewis Miley will not feature again this season after suffering a broken leg in training.

The 20-year-old only returned to action in April following a two-month spell on the sidelines with a separate leg injury.

But the Magpies say he is set for another stint in the treatment room after fracturing his right fibula in training on Tuesday.

Miley will travel to a specialist consultant on Wednesday before continuing his rehabilitation with the club's medical team.

The academy graduate is expected to be back for the start of pre-season, in July, but his campaign has been ended prematurely - just as he was settling back into the side.

In a period when head coach Eddie Howe made a host of changes, Miley was, tellingly, one of a handful of players to start each of Newcastle's past four games.

Having initially lined up in the middle of the park, Miley has once again filled in impressively at right-back since Tino Livramento hobbled off in the 2-1 defeat by Bournemouth last month.

Kieran Trippier, who is leaving the club in the summer, now looks set to be recalled for the trip to Nottingham Forest on Sunday.

  6. Magpies must hold on to 'bright spark' Osulapublished at 13:37 BST 5 May

William Osula celebrates after scoringImage source, Getty Images

It's nice to be writing something post-win. A slightly unfamiliar but pleasant feeling.

Thank you to Newcastle United for that. And thank you, too, to William Osula.

It looks like the ownership have made up their mind that Eddie Howe will be in charge next season - so we can stop talking about that, thank goodness. That leaves space to be positive and give kudos to the players that are going to make that possible for Howe.

Osula's transformation over the past year or so has been quietly very exciting. This is a player who seemed to me to be a good vibes guy - dancing and partying with the team when we won the cup (despite not having played in the game) as well as appearing on social media having fun with his teammates, but not really getting much game time.

In the summer, he was linked with two separate moves and it looked likely the club would be fine with his departure. Neither came to fruition, and where that might have dampened the resolve of a different type of player what we have seen in Osula is an incredible re-commitment. He has clearly been working on his pace and turning his raw talent into a more...cooked talent?

Yes OK, I can work on that description.

The point is that without Osula, his speed, and ability to be where he needed to be on Saturday to open the scoring, we wouldn't have had our first league win since mid-March.

We played with most of our established, older players on Saturday with the exception of Osula, who has clearly earned his spot in the team on merit.

It's hard to know what the summer will hold for Newcastle but if we can hold on to this bright spark we'd be all the better for it.

  7. 'A lot of players will have to come and go' - Given on recruitmentpublished at 08:32 BST 5 May

    Media caption,

Former Newcastle United goalkeeper Shay Given says he would "look to strengthen" the Magpies' attack this summer.

Given believes signings such as Nick Woltemade, Anthony Elanga and Yoane Wissa have not paid off for Eddie Howe.

Speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live's Monday Night Club, he explained: "Woltemade is a different kind of striker, a nine, a 10, I don't know what he is if I'm brutally honest. I don't know if he's suited to how Eddie Howe sets up his team, especially without the ball as much as with it.

"Wissa hasn't worked. Even at the weekend he had a big chance and didn't take it. Elanga looks like a different player as well.

"I just felt last summer, no director of football, no CEO, a lot of missing links. I think Eddie's season has sort of taken the brunt of that. I just think a lot of players will have to come and go this season to go again."

  8. 'Osula's confidence has grown'published at 08:25 BST 5 May

William Osula scores against BrightonImage source, Getty Images

Former Newcastle United defender John Anderson discusses William Osula on BBC Radio Newcastle: "He's having a good time at the moment. He was electric on Saturday because he likes to be able to run. He likes green grass and Brighton with that high line, they left so much space in behind and he just galloped into it. And he, he's so, so quick.

"He's incredibly quick. He caused them all sorts of problems, especially in that first half. Obviously he ran out of steam a little bit, as you would expect, but he'd already done his job.

"You can see his confidence has grown game by game as well. And as a striker, if you're scoring goals, your confidence is going to be up - that's what you're on the pitch to do. As I say, game by game, you can see that that confidence has grown."

  9. '100% the right man' or 'time to change'? Fans split on Howe newspublished at 13:34 BST 4 May

    Your Newcastle United opinions banner
Newcastle United manager Eddie HoweImage source, Getty Images

We asked for your views on the news that Eddie Howe is set to lead Newcastle United into the 2026-27 season following constructive talks with the club's hierarchy.

But is the 48-year-old the right person to move the Magpies forward?

Here are some of your thoughts:

Mike: Yes, he is. The transfer mess last summer has had a big hangover this season, and that wasn't his fault. Hopefully, with the executive team now in place, we can have a better summer window and he can take us forward again.

Ewan: It has been a rough season, but factors outside of Howe's control have all contributed to this. I 100% think he is the right man to lead us forward and, with a proper team in place for recruitment this summer, the future is exciting! The players have to take some accountability for our poor form. All the points dropped from winning positions is what has cost us, that cannot continue next season.

Graeme: No, it's time to change. There are plenty of managers available, with no compensation or release fees, that would suit us. But I don't think we will twist and it will be the usual line this summer when no money is spent and Howe is told what to say.

David: I guess we have to give Howe the benefit of the doubt this season, which was unsettled from the start by the Alexander Isak debacle. We do need to find a way of structuring our system so that the strikers are better supplied in the box. Player recruitment will also be critical to his success going forward. It's not going to be easy with top players wanting to play in European competitions. We need to keep our best key players and move those on who don't fit in. I think we all know who they are!

Paul: No, not for me. All good things come to an end, and I think we've reached the end of the line with Howe, unfortunately. We need new ideas and a fresh direction, with a major rebuild in the summer. We need to be ruthless to move the likes of Yoane Wissa, Joe Willock and Anthony Elanga out and bring in better quality players like Igor Thiago, Iliman Ndiaye and Ederson. But I don't think Howe has it in him, so I would like to see us go for somebody like Andoni Iraola.

  10. 'We know anything can happen' - Burn published at 12:35 BST 4 May

Newcastle United defender Dan Burn says the players are "going to give it a good push" for a European spot in the final three games of the season.

The Magpies are six points off seventh place in the table, which would guarantee Conference League football, with fixtures against Nottingham Forest, West Ham and Fulham still to come.

The 33-year-old spoke to Final Score presenter Jason Mohammad, and former Premier League players Nedum Onuoha and Stephen Warnock, after the Magpies' 3-1 win over Brighton on Saturday.

"There are three games left now and we know anything can happen," Burn said. "We know we are well outside of the European places, but we are going to give it a good push.

"We have found this season tough mentally. The amount of games you have to play means you don't get much time to train, and I've always said we are a team that likes to be out on the training pitch."

    Your opinions graphic

    This content isn't available anymore.

    There was an error

We asked for your thoughts after Saturday's Premier League game between Newcastle and Brighton.

Here are some of your comments:

    Newcastle fans

Wesley: I stick with Eddie Howe, but his tactics are puzzling sometimes. You need a team to play 90 minutes, not chop around in the second half. Hard to settle three subs into the game. Harvey Barnes should be on every game... all game.

Chris: Newcastle were a touch fortunate. Brighton dominated and maybe deserved a point.

JD: Thought the score was flattering to Newcastle. You can see why Osula is keeping the big-money strikers out of the starting XI. His running and pressing is relentless and he's unpredictable, which makes defenders nervous. It stopped Brighton's build from the back. Best player on the pitch and no surprise Brighton came back into it once he was subbed off. Newcastle still look very shaky at the back though, a lot of loose balls and Pope doesn't look confident with the ball at his feet.

LostGeordie: A tense and difficult watch. Another dreadful second half - we are supposed to come out at pace but the deliberate slowing of goal-kicks by Pope, perpetually ineffective, was terrible to watch, inviting Brighton's inevitable goal. I'll not comment on Wissa.

    Brighton fans

Fran: I thought we had cut out all this silly stuff by giving the ball away in dangerous areas. Verbruggen, again rushing out of his area, and Van Hecke dithering and then slipping. We gifted Newcastle three goals. They were not better than us and we should have won this game. Enjoy the last three games and forget about Europe. If it happens, great - if not, it shows we aren't ready.

David: The Brighton curse of this season strikes again - the inability to beat teams below them in the league. Could have been, should have been almost any score the number of chances created and were not taken. All is not lost - three games to go and we can still get into Europe.

CK: The same old story of attractive approach play was let down by poor delivery in the final third and lack of muscle up top to force the issue. A draw was probably a fairer result.

Jon: If they had been more clinical and defended better, they would have won easily. Verbruggen is a good keeper, but still makes ridiculous errors. Newcastle parked the bus for much of the game.

  12. Is Howe the right person to take Newcastle forward?published at 17:26 BST 3 May

Newcastle United have your say banner
Newcastle United head coach Eddie Howe reacts on the sidelinesImage source, Getty Images

Newcastle United head coach Eddie Howe looks set to lead the Magpies into next season after constructive talks with the club's Saudi Arabian leadership group.

The parties are said to have agreed on the boss' future, despite an under-par campaign, following their annual summit in Northumberland this week.

The 48-year-old, who took charge of the club in November 2021, said in his pre-match news conference that he had faced "difficult questions" from the owners and the board.

With only already-relegated Wolves and Burnley, plus relegation-fighting West Ham, suffering more defeats than Newcastle's 16 in the Premier League this season, it is understandable why there is growing pressure on the English head coach.

Despite the difficulties, the Magpies are still in with a chance of a European place, they reached the Carabao Cup semi-finals and they got to the Champions League knockout stage for the very first time.

"I want to do a good job for people," Howe said in the aftermath of Newcastle's 3-1 victory over Brighton on Saturday.

"I don't want to let the supporters down. I don't want to let the players down. I certainly don't want to let the owners down."

So, how do feel about this news? Is Howe the right person to lead the club moving forward?

  13. Howe reaffirms belief in 'hungry and motivated' Osulapublished at 15:35 BST 3 May

William Osula celebrates his goalImage source, Getty Images

William Osula is a player Eddie Howe clearly trusts.

The manager's decision to keep faith with the Danish striker paid off again, after he left £124m-worth of forwards - Nick Woltemade and Yoane Wissa - on the bench.

Osula has plenty of rough edges but the 22-year-old opened the scoring, caused the visitors problems with his pace, and tellingly left the field to a warm ovation from supporters when he was substituted off after a 68-minute appearance.

"He is very hungry, motivated and believes in himself," said Howe post-match. "I think he has a really bright future."

Osula's options looked limited following the subsequent arrival of Woltemade and Wissa, and he came close to joining Eintracht Frankfurt on deadline day last summer.

However, he stayed and has since stepped up with some big goals in recent months.

Although Newcastle are likely to still be in the market for a striker this summer, Howe wants to hold on to a player with "really rich promise".

Speaking about Osula, who Newcastle recruited from Sheffield United in 2024, Howe added: "We signed him with the view of developing him and trying to build him to become a Premier League player, because that certainly wasn't the player we recruited.

"He has done really well to stay stable, commit to that development and see the longer-term plan.

"It is great to see that when he comes into the team and gets an opportunity, he grabs it."

Still work to do after huge win - Howe

Newcastle manager Eddie Howe speaking to BBC Match of the Day: "Jacob Murphy is an excellent crosser of a football. He's created countless goals for us over the years. Will [William Osula] still had a bit to do and he did it well.

"Second goal, it's great to see us back in form from set plays.

"It was always going to be difficult game today, Brighton play very fluid, open, attractive football and we are not in that moment. We had to withstand a bit of pressure, ride our luck, but we were always a threat and scored a third.

"Couple of key saves from Nick [Pope], the one early in the game was massive because you don't want to be chasing the game against them with their style.

"The crowd were really good with us today, I am delighted for them. They've witnessed everything in the last few weeks and have stayed with us and stayed loyal to the team. I thank them greatly.

"It's been a horrible feeling for us for a number of weeks. We have been looking to change our fortunes. The attitude of the lads during this difficult run has been outstanding. We stayed together, trained well, and we got our reward today.

"It's always nice to win for and with them [the club hierarchy]. They have always been really supportive. It was great they were here to see the lads give so much. We are together as a united football club.

"The feelings and emotions of trying to put it right, trying to find solutions and answers, get through to the players and connect with them in a different way - in difficult moments I try to focus on what's going to put it right, rather than anger and blame. I take the responsibility myself.

"It's been hard for my family because they see the intimate side of me behind closed doors. I haven't been a bundle of joy the past few weeks, so I am pleased for them as well."

Newcastle defender Dan Burn speaking to BBC Sport Final Score: "We needed that, we have picked up some not great results lately. the win was important. It wasn't the greatest performance, let them back in second half, but it's great to get three points.

"A lot of the responsibility [for this season] falls on us players. The gaffer has taken a lot of stick, so that was for him today. Three games left anything can happen. We are well outside European places but we will give it a good push.

"I can understand the frustration, we have been on such an upward trajectory in recent seasons and we have taken a bit of a dip. We are looking to finish the season strong."

    Did you know?

    • All three of Newcastle United's Premier League wins over Brighton and Hove Albion have come at St James' Park, with the Magpies winning three of the last five encounters on home soil (D1 L1).

    • Bruno Guimaraes assisted Dan Burn's goal, with the pair making their 150th appearance for Newcastle United in the Premier League.

  15. Analysis: Howe's calls pay offpublished at 17:36 BST 2 May

    Ciaran Kelly
    Football reporter

    Eddie HoweImage source, Getty Images

This was an afternoon when Eddie Howe's big calls paid off when he needed them most.

The head coach justifiably kept faith with the bulk of players who put in an improved performance in a 1-0 defeat against Arsenal last week.

Having again decided to name £124m worth of forwards on the bench, in Nick Woltemade and Yoane Wissa, William Osula repaid the faith of his manager once more with the opener.

Dan Burn, meanwhile, who was preferred to Lewis Hall, doubled his side's lead against his former club.

It felt like Newcastle were in a commanding position, after taking a rare two-goal lead, as the confidence flowed through the team.

But how would they respond when Jack Hinshelwood pulled one back? Were Newcastle about to squander another victory?

Howe made a triple change in an attempt to prevent just that as he threw on Hall, Harvey Barnes and Wissa.

Newcastle had to ride out a nervy period, but those changes eventually paid off when Wissa was denied by Bart Verbruggen and the ball fell to Barnes, who lashed it into the net.

It was clear how much that goal meant to Howe, who was mobbed by assistants Jason Tindall and Graeme Jones on the touchline.

They have to build on it.

    Newcastle XI

Joelinton returns as Newcastle United make one change for the visit of Brighton.

The midfielder missed the defeats against Arsenal and Bournemouth through suspension, but is recalled in place of Jacob Ramsey this afternoon.

Anthony Gordon is not fit enough to start, but makes the bench after recovering from a hip issue.

Newcastle XI: Pope, Miley, Thiaw, Botman, Burn, Guimaraes, Joelinton, Tonali, Murphy, Osula, Willock.

Subs: Ramsdale, Trippier, Hall, Wissa, Gordon, Barnes, Elanga, Woltemade, Ramsey.

Danny Welbeck starts as Brighton also make a solitary change for the trip to St James' Park.

The striker, who has a fine goalscoring record against Newcastle, comes in for Georginio Rutter and captains the visitors today.

Manager Fabian Hurzeler has otherwise kept faith with the team who defeated Chelsea 3-0 last time out.

Brighton XI: Verbruggen, Wieffer, van Hecke, Boscagli, Kadioglu, Gross, Baleba, Minteh, Hinshelwood, Mitoma, Welbeck.

Subs: Steele, Julio, Dunk, Rutter, Kostoulas, Ayari, De Cuyper, O'Riley, Veltman.
