  1. Man Utd 3-2 Liverpool: What Carrick and Mainoo saidpublished at 18:27 BST 3 May

    Media caption,

Manchester United manager Michael Carrick talking to Sky Sports post-match about whether he's proud of their performance: "Yes, in some ways the work that has been done, the way the players have played, we can take a lot from it. Qualifying for the Champions League felt off in the distance at one point. It's not something we celebrate really, we just want to finish high up in the league."

On why the team were so good today: "Good players and good staff definitely help. The connection we have as a group, overcoming change and difficult challenges. We're just trying to do the right things and players have taken everything on so well, we want to finish the season strong."

On being a threatening side: "We scored a lot of goals, we have scored in the past five games. Our focus has been out of possession work. We try to put our strength in the game, we started the game well. I'm just as pleased with the way we finished the game. Two setbacks could have knocked us but the players were quality, and we came out on top."

Refocusing after conceding: "We go back to belief, which is tested in those moments. Players want to work hard for each other. The tactics is one side and mentality is another. It gets you through difficult times."

On still improving: "In our league it is encouraging to see how we've done so well, we want to keep improving, and we can't underestimate what the players have done."

On what's next: "It's not about what I like or not like, it's not in my control, everything has gone so well. We know the situation, and we still want to get better and see what happens next."

On Benjamin Sesko's injury: "He's been carrying a shin problem for some time, he got pushed and caught the bit that's been causing him some problems."

Manchester United's Kobbie Mainoo, speaking to BBC Sport: "Never an easy game against Liverpool, glad to come out with a win. Liverpool are a good side, we didn't come out as sharp as we should have [in the second half], but we came away with a win."

On his goal: "It's nice to be back among the goals, I haven't scored for a while."

On securing Champions League football: "It was a huge goal for us to get the Champions League, but the season isn't over yet, we're not letting our foot off the gas."

On signing a new contract: "It's a blessing, happy to commit my future to the club I've been at all my life."

    Did you know?

    • Under Michael Carrick (including in 2021), Manchester United have won eight of their nine Premier League home games (L1). Carrick is only the sixth manager – and first English manager – to win 8+ of his first nine home games in the competition, and first since Antonio Conte in 2016-17 (also 8/9).

    • Since Ruben Amorim departed as Manchester United manager in January, no player has more Premier League goals than Benjamin Sesko (9 goals).

There could be no more fitting scorer of such an important goal.

Manchester United officials are adamant there was no chance of Kobbie Mainoo being allowed to leave on loan in the summer window, as he wanted to amid keen interest from Napoli.

But some very serious conversations would have been had towards the end of the winter window if Ruben Amorim had not been sacked.

It will forever be the scar on Amorim's time at the club that he could not find a place for Mainoo in his starting line-up in the league this season.

He did not need to prove it was a bad call but Mainoo's goal - the precision strike, the celebration that followed, United as a club milking the adulation surrounding an academy graduate - showed the error up for what it was.

Not that it was all plain sailing.

If there was any need for United fans to understand this current team is still not at the level required to compete for major honours, the first 15 minutes of the second half provided it.

The party atmosphere that swept around Old Trafford at half-time as the gleeful home supporters celebrated what they felt was certain to be a comprehensive victory over their rivals was replaced by the equivalent of a slap round the face with a wet dishcloth.

Michael Carrick could only watch in disbelief as his previously sure-footed team collapsed.

Half-time substitute Amad Diallo had only been on the field for two minutes when he played a square pass just inside the Liverpool half to Dominik Szoboszlai, who was then allowed to run 50 yards with no challenge.

Senne Lammens has been so solid since his summer arrival from Royal Antwerp but the Belgian got his passing angles wrong for the visitors' second.

It gives Carrick something tangible to work on this week.

The United fans weren't bothered about that though. They just sang Carrick's name as he left the field.

  5. 'I'm a big fan' - Amad gets Carrick backingpublished at 12:45 BST 3 May

    Simon Stone
    Manchester United reporter

Manchester United winger Amad DialloImage source, Getty Images

Manchester United boss Michael Carrick has defended Amad Diallo and insists the winger is playing well, even though he has not registered a goal or an assist in 2026.

The Ivory Coast international was one of the players who benefited from Ruben Amorim's time at Old Trafford.

Used as either a wing-back or in one of the number 10 roles, Amad scored 11 goals and claimed 10 assists last season, with 18 of his contributions coming after the former Sporting boss' arrival in November 2024.

Amad scored once and created three more goals in the opening 10 games of this season, but since scoring in Manchester United's 4-4 thriller with Bournemouth, immediately before he left for the Africa Cup of Nations, the 23-year-old has drawn a complete blank.

He was substituted off at half-time against Brentford, as Carrick tried to find a way to stop the left-sided raids of Bees full-back Keane Lewis-Potter.

But, before that, he had wasted a glorious chance after being teed up by team-mate Kobbie Mainoo, who charged into the box with a brilliant run that took him past three Brentford defenders.

Nevertheless, Carrick is adamant the treatment was not a reflection of Amad's form.

"I actually think he is playing well," he explained. "There is an awful lot more in the game, playing in a winning team like he has, to worry about numbers.

"He gives the team so much. He has got so much talent. His work ethic and attitude is fantastic. He has played different roles at times. I'm a big fan.

"It was unfortunate we had to change things tactically the other night, because that was purely why he came off.

"But he has given this team an awful lot. It is about the underbelly of what goes into a performance and not always what the headline grabs."

  6. Sutton's predictions: Man Utd v Liverpoolpublished at 10:04 BST 3 May

Chris Sutton smiling on a yellow and black background with 'Sutton's predictions' written below his face

Apart from the future of both managers, it doesn't feel like many people are talking much about either club here, which feels odd before such a grudge match between two old rivals.

It's impossible to predict how this one will turn out. Manchester United were lucky to edge past Brentford on Monday, while Liverpool got a good win over Crystal Palace to take a bit of heat off Arne Slot.

Bruno Fernandes has had an outstanding season for United and Liverpool will need to stop the Portuguese Pied Piper from leading them a merry dance.

It looks like no Mohamed Salah for Liverpool, after he went off injured against the Eagles, but Alexander Isak scoring in that game felt big for him and Liverpool, after such a stop-start campaign.

It could be that an individual - either Bruno or Isak - steps up again to win the game for their team but I am going for an entertaining draw.

    Sutton's prediction: 2-2

  7. Man Utd v Liverpool: Key stats and talking pointspublished at 13:15 BST 2 May

    Chris Adams
    BBC Sport journalist

Manchester United take on Liverpool at Old Trafford on Sunday (15:30 BST) in what is the 186th league meeting between England's two most successful clubs.

With four games to go, just three points separate United in third and Liverpool in fourth. A win for Michael Carrick's side will make Champions League football next season a certainty.

Neither side has mounted a serious title challenge, but the Red Devils hierarchy might be wondering what could have been had they appointed Carrick sooner.

Since the Englishman returned to the hotseat in mid-January, United have won nine of their 13 league games (including six out of seven at home) and top the overall form table for that timeframe.

The Premier League form table for games played since Manchester United appointed Michael Carrick as head coach on 13 January 2026, showing them top with 29 points from 13 games.

After supplying Benjamin Sesko for United's second against Brentford on Monday, Bruno Fernandes is now just one shy of equalling Thierry Henry and Kevin de Bruyne's record of 20 Premier League assists in a season.

Classy Casemiro will be hard to replace

Fernandes' midfield colleagues, Casemiro and Kobbie Mainoo, also shone against the Bees. Those two players face very different futures, however, with Mainoo signing a new contract this week and Casemiro leaving at the end of the season.

The Brazilian got United's first against Brentford to take his league tally for the season to nine (he was briefly United's joint top scorer until Sesko edged ahead).

Aside from losing his vast experience and leadership qualities, the 34-year-old's aerial ability in the opposition box is unmatched among midfield players. Since making his United debut in August 2022, only centre-forwards Erling Haaland (18), Ollie Watkins (16) and Chris Wood (13) have scored more headers in England's top tier than Casemiro.

    Reds chasing Champions League slot

Liverpool make the short trip across the M62 having won three league games on the bounce as they look to secure Champions League qualification for the ninth time in 10 seasons. Five points from their remaining games will guarantee just that.

It is a journey that has been a pleasant one for the Merseyside club in recent seasons - the Reds have won three of their past five league away games at Old Trafford, as many as in their previous 18 visits.

The table shows Liverpool have lost just one of their last seven Premier League games against Manchester United at Old Trafford.

The departing Mohamed Salah has proven to be a constant thorn in United's side over the years, but it looks like a minor muscle injury sustained in the win over Crystal Palace last week will deprive him of one last chance to add to his 13 Premier League goals against Liverpool's bitter rivals – more than any other player in the competition's history.

Looking to life after Salah – with Hugo Ekitike sidelined for several months after rupturing his Achilles tendon – head coach Arne Slot will be hoping Alexander Isak's first Anfield goal, which came against Palace, gives the Sweden striker a timely morale boost.

Isak returned to action this month after breaking his fibula in December and has started just eight games since his British record £125m switch from Newcastle United in September. His next start will be his 100th in England's top flight.

Despite a 2-1 defeat in the reverse meeting in October, Liverpool's recent form against their old foes is generally very good – not since 2015-16 have Sunday's hosts done the league double in this fixture. In fact, the Reds have lost just three of their past 19 league games against United (won seven, drawn nine).

  8. 'A monumental moment in this club's history' - Neville recalls Treble winpublished at 13:14 BST 2 May

Gary Neville and David Beckham of Manchester United celebrate after winning the 1999 Champions League finalImage source, Getty Images

Former Manchester United captain Gary Neville has been reflecting on his upbringing as a supporter and his role in the Red Devils' legendary 1999 Treble-winning season on the latest episode of the Manchester People podcast from BBC Radio Manchester.

United had already won the Premier League and the FA Cup when they faced Bayern Munich in the Champions League final in Barcelona.

Sir Alex Ferguson's side were 1-0 down heading into extra time but scored two dramatic goals through Teddy Sheringham and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to turn the game around and become the first English team to win the Treble.

"When Ole scored the Champions League-winning goal and got back to the changing room, I remember saying to him, 'you have no idea what you've just done'," Neville said.

"A monumental moment in this club's history, and it'll never be beaten - the Treble, Sir Matt Busby's birthday, everything you could ever wish for in a moment and he was there to stick his toe out.

"I was there that night thinking - I know that my dream has been achieved. I'm always going to be a Man United player. No-one can ever take that away from me, I played on that pitch, United's first team.

"That's all I'd ever wanted to do as a kid, was step out on to that pitch wearing that shirt."

  9. 'A standout game' - Carrick on special Liverpool rivalrypublished at 18:20 BST 1 May

    Simon Stone
    Manchester United reporter

Michael Carrick looks at the ball that has gone past him played by Steven Gerrard during a game between Manchester United and Liverpool in 2012Image source, Getty Images

Three weeks ago, Michael Carrick assessed Manchester United's long-standing rivalry with Leeds from the standpoint of only having played in a match between the two sides once.

He was on far safer ground on Friday.

Carrick played against Liverpool on 25 occasions, winning 13 and losing seven.

He knows first hand how intense the friction is between England's two most successful clubs, which endures irrespective of where they are in the league table.

The prize they are fighting for this season is third spot, with Liverpool knowing they will leapfrog United if they win at Old Trafford.

But Carrick knows the desire for points goes much deeper.

"It is certainly one of my favourite games," he said. "It is a standout game.

"There are big games and big rivalries with other teams, but this one is right up there - the history, the ups and downs, the excitement, entertainment and emotion.

"It is that edge, that competition, irrespective of league positions. It has never really changed the feeling of the game.

"Two incredible clubs, so close to each other in terms of titles and geography."

If Manchester United win, they will move six points clear of Liverpool, confirm their place in next season's Champions League - they will have done that anyway if Brighton and Bournemouth fail to win their weekend fixtures - and complete their first league double over the Anfield outfit since 2015-16.

  10. Carrick on Cunha fitness, Mainoo contract and Liverpool rivalrypublished at 14:56 BST 1 May

    Millie Sian
    BBC Sport journalist

    Media caption,

Manchester United boss Michael Carrick has been speaking to the media before Sunday's Premier League game against Liverpool at Old Trafford (kick-off 15:30 BST).

Here are the key lines from his news conference:

    • The squad is in "good shape" going into the final four fixtures of the season. He is "hopeful" Matheus Cunha and Luke Shaw could feature in the matchday squad, but Matthijs de Ligt is "a bit further away" from returning.

    • He has been "hugely impressed" with 21-year-old Kobbie Mainoo, who signed a new five-year deal earlier this week: "I've known him for quite some time, in different capacities. He epitomises this football club. He lives and breathes the club and he has come through with real talent. The natural thing for him was to sign a new contract, so everyone is over the moon."

    • When asked about the first conversation he had with the out-of-favour academy graduate on his return to the club, Carrick said: "I wanted to understand what life had looked like for him over the past two or three years - the ups and downs, plus the challenging times. It was about letting him thrive and giving him the platform to be himself. He has evolved from that."

    • Casemiro's longevity has been down to "hard work and sacrifice". On the 34-year-old, he said: "When you cross the 30-mark, it's about trusting the player to know themselves. We're trying to play to his strengths now, if anything, and we have real trust in his experience. He knows what he's good at and what he can bring to this team."

    • It is a "privilege" to take charge of a game against long-standing rivals Liverpool at Old Trafford. However, Carrick didn't say if he was hoping it would be the first of many for him in the dugout, instead adding that the opportunity is a "special" one.

    • He added: "It is a standout game, without a doubt. There are obviously rivalries that we have with other teams, but this one is right up there because of the history, the ups and downs, the entertainment and the emotions. Even league position has never changed the emotion for the players or the supporters, so I really appreciate what it means to them."

    • On the opportunity to finish above Liverpool this season: "That shows the improvement of this group. We have been getting stronger and we are coming into this game in such a good position. I'm fully aware of how close things are between us, but that isn't something we are focusing on."

    • Liverpool are a "good team with good players, who won the league last year", so Sunday's fixture will be "a whole different ball game" for his players.

    • Manchester United are on the brink of securing European football for next season, so the aim should now be to "keep evolving" season on season: "We want to be a successful team that wins trophies again. That has to be the aim. It isn't going to be easy or straightforward, but it has to be the challenge. We want to be competing for the biggest trophies. We've done it in the past and we need to be doing it again."

  11. 'If United beat Liverpool, give Carrick the contract'published at 10:30 BST 1 May

On this week's episode of BBC Radio Manchester's The Devils' Advocate podcast, Gaz Drinkwater and Joe McGrath were joined by BBC Sport's Simon Stone, with discussion surrounding Manchester United's game against Liverpool on Sunday and Michael Carrick's future.

If Liverpool win, they will go third and above United on goal difference. The Red Devils will be looking to do the league double, having won 2-1 at Anfield earlier this season.

McGrath said: "If Manchester United put on an excellent display against Liverpool, secure Champions League football at home at Old Trafford, in a big game like this, it might get Michael Carrick over the line."

"If United beat Liverpool, in any shape or fashion, give him the contract," Drinkwater replied.

Stone added: "United have got a good chance. I don't necessarily buy into the idea of United having to win to give Carrick the job. His credentials have improved. I'm scarred by the 5-0 defeat under Ole Gunnar Solskajer - he survived.

"There's been some bad days against Liverpool, and this is a chance to do the double over them, because Ruben Amorim won at Anfield."

  14. 'The sky's the limit' as Mainoo signs new deal published at 17:14 BST 30 April

    Beth Tucker
    Fan contributor

    Manchester United fan's voice banner

Manchester United supporter Beth Tucker reflects on United midfielder Kobbie Mainoo signing a new long-term deal with the club.

    Media caption,

"Kobbie Mainoo has just signed a long-term deal at Manchester United until 2031 and this has been a long time coming.

"I am so happy. I can't stop smiling about it. One of our own, an extremely, extremely talented player and I'm even more happy about this because it could have gone the other way.

"In a different universe, if Ruben Amorim was still Manchester United manager, if that Leeds press conference doesn't happen where Amorim comes out, all guns blazing, fractures his relationship with Jason Wilcox [United's director of football], fractures his relationship with the Manchester United hierarchy and then subsequently ends up departing Manchester United - Kobbie Mainoo could be playing in Naples.

"He could have been playing for Napoli. That was a move that was seriously on the cards because he couldn't get the game time under Ruben Amorim. He could have been playing for Chelsea and we could have had Conor Gallagher playing in our midfield.

"The fact we've managed to keep one of our own that is already super-talented, already having the experience of playing on the world's biggest stage, whether that be in an FA Cup final against Manchester City - a very good Manchester City side - bossing the midfield over the likes of Rodri, scoring the match-winning goal and winning man of the match or getting yourself into an England starting 11 in a major tournament.

I think doing all that at his age and then having a setback of being out of the Manchester United side and having to come through that and now he's thriving, you've seen that best form again.

"I think that sets him up for such a good career, especially with the attributes he already has. That close control he has, that coolness, that calmness.

"I really think the sky's the limit for him. He's still got levels to go up, he's not the finished article, but Mainoo signing until 2031 - I'm so happy about it. I think he's going to be a pivotal player in Manchester United's success to come in the future hopefully."

  15. Cunha returns to Man Utd trainingpublished at 17:12 BST 30 April

    Simon Stone
    Manchester United reporter

Manchester United forward Matheus CunhaImage source, Getty Images

Matheus Cunha has been pictured by Manchester United amid the preparations for Sunday's Premier League encounter with Liverpool at Old Trafford.

Cunha missed Monday's win over Brentford with what Michael Carrick said was a minor injury and that seems to be the case, given the Brazilian played a full part in Thursday's session, according to the club.

The Brazilian had started 10 successive games under Carrick prior to the Brentford game and his availability would be welcome ahead of one of the most eagerly anticipated games of the season.

Carrick's side need two points from their final four games to secure a return to the Champions League next season after a two-year absence, although if Brighton and Bournemouth fail to win their respective games over the weekend, qualification will be assured.

  16. 'News every Man Utd fan wanted to hear' as Mainoo commits long-term futurepublished at 15:20 BST 30 April

    Your Manchester United opinions banner
Kobbie Mainoo signs contractImage source, Getty Images

We asked for your views on Kobbie Mainoo, who has signed a new deal that will keep him at Old Trafford until 2031.

Here are some of your comments:

Graham: This is the news that every Manchester United fan wanted to hear. Kobbie will lead the midfield fight for years to come. The next piece of news we need to hear is that Michael Carrick has been given the manager's job. Happy times ahead.

Trevor: Very good footballer. I'm glad he signed, but let's hope after signing the big contract he doesn't follow in the footsteps of others and we don't see the level of his performances drop!

Sandra: This is the young talent Manchester United should be nurturing for the here and now and the future. To think we could have lost him due to previous bad management!

Colin: Great to see a Mancunian stay at United - pretty rare to see a Manchester connection nowadays!

Adam: Absolutely brilliant news. Almost hard to believe that Ruben Amorim couldn't see Mainoo's obvious talent and potential.

Christine: Mainoo has been excellent since he has been playing in the first team and he deserves a new contract on better terms. I hope that this does not stop United making a move for another midfielder that gives competition for places. I don't know what the reasons were why Amorim didn't rate Mainoo, but competition is going to be important after a World Cup year.

Paul: A no-brainer. He's one of the best players at the club. It would have been gross mismanagement by the board to let him go.

  17. 'United has always been my home' - send your views Mainoo's new dealpublished at 12:30 BST 30 April

So, Manchester United midfielder Kobbie Mainoo has ended months of uncertainty and speculation over his future by signing a new deal to keep him at Old Trafford until 2031.

21-year-old Mainoo joined the club's world-renowned academy in 2014, having been associated with Manchester United since the age of six.

He has already made 98 appearances for the club, scoring the decisive goal in the 2024 FA Cup final and representing England in the Euro 2024 final.

"Manchester United has always been my home; this special club means everything to my family," Mainoo told club media his new deal.

"I have grown up seeing the impact that our club has on our city, and I relish the responsibility that comes with wearing this shirt.

"We can all feel the momentum building inside the club. I am determined to step up and play my role in helping Manchester United to regularly fight for major trophies in the years ahead."

How do you feel about Mainoo's new deal? What are you views on his career so far? And what role will he play in the future of the club?
