Curtis Davies: on restrictions and the new season

Former Hull City captain Curtis Davies says that the Tigers' current financial issues won't leave the players concerned about their wages - but it will make them worry about the club's ambitions.

The side has struggled since sacking boss Liam Rosenior in May 2024 after coming up one place short of the play-offs that season.

The following year they ended up in the relegation fight, dismissing replacement Tim Walter in November while next boss Ruben Selles secured them another year in the Championship before departing for Sheffield United.

They are now under the guidance of boss Sergej Jakirovic but the Bosnian has no experience in English football and has to deal with a transfer embargo that the club is currently appealing.

"The players are getting paid so that side is fine - it's the ambition," Davies told BBC Radio Humberside.

"If you sign for a club and this club finished seventh when you signed and they sack that manager to get this next manager that they think is going to take you to the next level, you're sold that dream.

"But then you end up escaping relegation with two managers and now another manager the year after.

"The likes of Semi Ajayi that came from West Brom, a very good player, a Nigerian international, maybe thought as well the club might kick on... but now, because of the fee restriction, we may be going in this direction."

Hull City midfielder Abdulkadir Omur will spend the season on loan at Turkish Super Lig club Antalyaspor.

Omur initially moved to Hull from Trabzonspor in February last year and has played 37 games for the Tigers.

But the 26-year-old, capped 14 times by his country, spent the second half of last season back in his homeland on loan at Caykur Rizespor.

Now he returns for a second loan spell, having not been included in Hull's plans with new head coach Sergej Jakirovic.

Hull City have been forced to settle an outstanding debt for the second time in a week to get another transfer embargo lifted.

BBC Radio Humberside understands it relates to an overdue payment to Manchester City for last season's loan signing of defender Fin Burns.

The Tigers had been notified late on Friday that they had once again been placed under a transfer embargo, but a source has told me the debt was paid on Monday, meaning the embargo has been removed.

Had the overdue payment not been made by 16:00 BST on Tuesday, the latest sanction would have been reported publicly on the official website of governing body, the EFL, as per their standard regulations.

The club have been approached for comment.

Burns made 11 appearances in all competitions last season but did not feature after the 3-0 win at Sheffield United on 24 January.

Last weekend Tigers owner Acun Ilicali defended the club's position regarding the three-window fee restrictions punishment relating to forward Louie Barry's loan from Aston Villa, claiming the issue is "a misunderstanding" and said they were confident of a positive outcome having lodged an appeal against the sanction.

The fee restrictions penalty is separate from any transfer embargo and can only be removed, or reduced, upon a successful appeal.

As it stands, under the current limitations of those sanctions, the Championship side are unable to buy or sign any players that would cost them a transfer fee.

They can only bring in free agents or loanees but with no additional payments made such as signing bonuses or loan fees.

  5. 'I'm coming in to compete with Pandur' - Phillipspublished at 12:03 BST 4 July 2025

Dillon Phillips: I'm coming in to push Ivor Pandur

Goalkeeper Dillon Phillips said he has not just joined Hull City to make up the numbers, he has every intention of vying for the number one spot.

Phillips signed for the Tigers in June from Rotherham but he will face tough competition to break into the starting XI after an impressive 2024-25 campaign from Ivor Pandur, who was named the player of the season.

"If I said to you that I was going to come in and be happy to be a backup to Igor, then that would be doing myself an injustice," Phillips told BBC Radio Humberside.

"I feel like I can compete at this level and my career has shown that.

"I'm coming in to compete and coming in to push Ivor as hard as possible, and I already know after a week's training we've got a great dynamic."

However, as much as Phillips will want his opportunity to shine, it does not mean he wants to see Pandur falter.

"It's not a direct competition between me and Ivor," Phillips added.

"At the end of the day, we are playing for the same football club, so there's not one part of me that wants him to not succeed and I'm sure he would say the same."

"Timing is an important lesson for the club and myself to make sure we prioritise the number one target.
