Glasner on Riad return, fixture congestion and Wharton fitnesspublished at 14:48 GMT 5 November 2025
Crystal Palace boss Oliver Glasner has been speaking to the media before Thursday's Uefa Conference League game against AZ Alkmaar at Selhurst Park (kick-off 20:00 GMT).
Here are the key lines from his news conference:
Glasner confirmed Eddie Nketiah and Rio Cardines will not be available for the game, but midfielder Adam Wharton is back despite him not being "100% right now" having been suffering with illness.
He also confirmed Chadi Riad, who has not played since suffering an anterior cruciate ligament injury in January, will be part of the matchday squad. Glasner said: "That's the best news: yesterday he was allowed to train with the team, and he had yesterday's and today's session. He will be in the matchday squad tomorrow. We have one spot [in the squad] free. I spoke to him, and it's just wearing the shirt and seeing the Selhurst atmosphere. He won't get minutes, but now it's to build him up step by step."
The Eagles boss added: "It's important we don't talk about him every day and expect he'll be back in one week or two weeks. He was out more or less one-and-a-half years with a break in between when he trained with us. Of course, this week was a big moment for him. It gives you a boost when you can play football."
After confirmation that their Carabao Cup quarter-final with Arsenal would now take place on 23 December, Glasner said the club are "trying" to have the Premier League game away to Leeds on 21 December moved forward by a day but they "didn't get response up to now from the Premier League".
On the fixture schedule congestion, he added: "I'm always talking about making mistakes is a part of development, and I think the EFL and Premier League didn't solve this problem before the start of season. They will learn from it and I think next year they will have a solution before the season starts. Maybe they need this experience to learn to solve it."
Glasner does not believe any game is a "must win" but they "will do everything to win" against AZ Alkmaar on Thursday as they know they are an "experienced European team" and have given both West Ham and Aston Villa tough games in recent seasons.
He continued: "I watch the game [they played] on Sunday, they could have been 3-0 up at half time and it showed how good they are. We will have to perform at a top level to get this win. It would make it a bit easier if we get this win for the following three games but we take step by step, game by game and give our best tomorrow."
