  1. Crystal Palace analysis: Long winless home run against City goes onpublished at 17:35 GMT 14 December 2025

Crystal Palace will be left rueing the openings they had against Manchester City as they struck the woodwork twice but were ultimately well beaten at home.

Yeremy Pino should really have done better with his gilt-edged chance in the first half and scoring that would have given the game a different complexion.

Wharton impressed in the middle of the park for Oliver Glasner's side with no player winning more tackles than his four, but he hit the post and screwed two presentable opportunities off target.

Palace have made their best start of a Premier League season and although this setback keeps them in fifth place, they are now winless in their last 11 home league games against City, a run that stretches back a decade.

  2. Crystal Palace 0-3 Man City: What Glasner saidpublished at 16:40 GMT 14 December 2025

    Media caption,

Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner, speaking to BBC Match of the Day: "It feels a little bit wrong [the result] but we have to accept it. This is how big games are decided. It was small margins.

"I think City were better in the boxes. We had 16 shots and losing 3-0 is a tough moment. We will take our lessons from this game. We need these games to grow and develop and progress.

"We had three or four big chances and we tried to get our goal and get back into the game. It felt like if we got it something could happen.

"Great cross, great movemtent and great header, that is why it is Haaland and why he scores 40 goals a season. The performance today was better than the FA Cup final but we had the efficiency and City missed it."

On Daichi Kamada's injury: "That is the most disappointing part from this game. He was so good with Adam Wharton today. He stretched when he landed and overstretched and the hamstring got injured. We will assess him tomorrow.

"It hurts because it looks like we will miss him now for a little bit longer."

  5. Sutton's predictions: Crystal Palace v Man City published at 10:12 GMT 14 December 2025

Chris Sutton smiling on a yellow and black background with 'Sutton's predictions' written below his face

I predict Crystal Palace to win a lot of games because I really rate them but the Europa Conference League has definitely affected them this season.

Still, Manchester City have only had an extra 24 hours rest since beating Real Madrid on Wednesday, so will it make much difference here?

I'm not sure it will. On top of that, I still don't trust City on the road, especially after witnessing their collapse at Fulham.

Erling Haaland will probably come up with a goal for them and usually I'd say City will find a way to edge this.

Not this time, though. Palace beat City in the FA Cup final and that makes me think Eagles boss Oliver Glasner will have a plan that works this time, too.

His team just need to be able to carry it out for 90 minutes.

    Sutton's prediction: 1-1

  6. Crystal Palace v Man City: Key stats and talking pointspublished at 13:02 GMT 13 December 2025

    Tom McCoy
    BBC Sport journalist

Crystal Palace can move to within two points of Manchester City when the sides meet this weekend. BBC Sport examines some of the key themes before Sunday's match.

Palace have never beaten Pep Guardiola's City at Selhurst Park but they did come out on top in last season's FA Cup final, claiming their first major trophy courtesy of a 1-0 win.

The Eagles only had 22% possession in the final but were able to stifle City's attack while remaining a threat on the counter. That's been a strategy regularly employed by boss Oliver Glasner – 17 of Palace's last 20 league wins have come in matches where they have had under 50% possession.

The Londoners, who claimed a comfortable Conference League win at Shelbourne on Thursday, have started the season impressively. They already have 26 points, which is twice as many as at this stage last year and their highest figure after 15 Premier League games.

However, the festive period could prove a testing one for Palace's relatively shallow squad. Ismaila Sarr, their second highest scorer this term, is expected to report for Africa Cup of Nations duty with Senegal next week, providing he overcomes a recent injury.

To make matters worse, wing-back Daniel Munoz, who was outstanding against City at Wembley, will be out for at least four weeks following knee surgery.

The image is a bar chart displaying Crystal Palace's points total after the first 15 Premier League games across different seasons. Their highest figure is 26 in the current campaign. The lowest points total was 10 in the 2017-18 season

City win again but Guardiola demands more

Manchester City made it four wins in a row – and eight victories from their past 10 games – by beating Real Madrid on Wednesday, but Guardiola was quick to bring his side back down to earth.

He insisted City have produced better performances at the Bernabeu without winning, adding "that level is not quite enough" for success in the latter stages of the Champions League.

The Spaniard was also the party pooper after last weekend's 3-0 victory over Sunderland. Summer signing Rayan Cherki starred in that game, assisting two goals, but Guardiola appeared unimpressed by the Frenchman's rabona cross for City's third.

"I want players to do the simple things well," the manager said afterwards, pointedly noting he has never seen Lionel Messi attempt a rabona.

Guardiola is hardly known for simplicity in team selection, with his penchant for rotation – and so-called 'Pep Roulette' – a familiar frustration for fantasy football managers.

Yet this season, the 54-year-old has relied on continuity more than in the past. Wednesday's win in Madrid was the fifth time he has named an unchanged starting line-up in the current campaign. Before 2025-26, he had never done so more than twice in a season with City.

The image displays a table detailing how frequently Pep Guardiola has selected an unchanged Manchester City starting lineup across different seasons. Guardiola has rarely named an unchanged City XI, with zero instances in four different seasons (2018-19, 2019-20, 2022-23, 2023-24), but has done so five times already in the current campaign
  7. Glasner on delayed flight, Mateta and being 'efficient' against Man Citypublished at 14:50 GMT 12 December 2025

Crystal Palace boss Oliver Glasner has been speaking to the media before Sunday's Premier League game against Manchester City at Selhurst Park (Kick-off 14:00 GMT).

Here are the key lines from his news conference:

    • Glasner confirmed that "all who played [on Thursday] should be fine" for Sunday's game, with the Palace boss hopeful that Jean-Phillippe Mateta and Ismaila Sarr will both be available: "It will give us a few more options and it's important to have these options against City."

    • On their delayed return from Ireland: "Yes, we have to deal with the circumstances like this. We couldn't go home after the game – some issues with the plane, but it's better that there are issues when the plane is on the ground than it happens when we are in the air! Yes, we've had to adjust the plan, but again, it's not so difficult. We'll train after arrival with the players who didn't play many minutes yesterday, and of course, we add JP [Mateta] and Isma [Sarr]."

    • Glasner said he "expected" the good performance against Shelbourne because he knows "what the players are capable of", adding: "We could manage all the minutes and, of course, celebrate a big win. Overall, it was a good journey here to Ireland. We go back with a lot of confidence and with a lot of joy, looking forward to the City game."

    • He acknowledged that the "challenge will be to control their [City's] attack" on Sunday, but recognises "they are also giving opportunities to create chances".

    • On a first meeting with Pep Guardiola's side since FA Cup final victory in May: "To be honest, there's always great energy in our stadium at Selhurst. Our fans create this great energy. We had a very long, unbeaten home run until the [Manchester] United game and it's now the chance to start the next run again. Of course, when you play City, we will need a top performance to get the win, but we know we can count on our fans that they will support us and then we will try it, definitely."

    • On what he wants to see from his side: "I think we were competitive in the FA Cup final. We were very efficient, and we had a great goalkeeper and a great spirit to defend our goal and this we will need again – we will need great spirit and a team effort to defend the goal. We will need a great goalkeeper and we will need to be efficient because I'm pretty sure that we will create three or four chances to score, and of course it would be good to take one of these opportunities."

We asked for your views on Crystal Palace's Conference League match against Shelbourne on Thursday.

Here are some of your comments:

Sandra: It was great to see Christantus Uche get his chance and take it with a great performance and score his first goal for the club. Man of the match for me. A great team performance with the front three all scoring.

Lucy: Yes, we were clear favourites before the match, but it's great to see some squad rotation in the middle of such a busy period. It just shows that we don't just rely on a handful of players to score vital goals. I was chuffed for Romain Esse - he played well, and I really hope it helped his confidence and that he's given more minutes. Everyone on the pitch was a true team player, and that's thanks to Oliver Glasner. I just hope that he extends his contract.

Josh: Almost the perfect game - perfect performance and perfect substitutions. Was happy to see 17-year-old Ben Casey get a debut and brilliant to see Uche score his first goal for Palace. The only dark cloud was Justin Devenney's injury, which would be bad enough as it is but in this hectic schedule, it is not helpful.

Steve: A convincing win. Players getting valuable minutes on the pitch. Plus, three well-taken goals. Glasner can be very satisfied with a night where nearly everything went to plan. So pleased for Uche, who could easily challenge Jean-Philippe Mateta for a place this weekend, and young Casey. A much tougher task on Sunday, but hope of a good win against Manchester City springs eternal.

Christantus Uche got a goal and an assist on his first start for Crystal Palace

It was hard to see how the evening could have gone better for Crystal Palace boss Oliver Glasner, whose side are in the middle of a frantic 15-game run between 22 November and 10 January.

The Eagles cruised to a dominant 3-0 victory against Shelbourne in Dublin to strengthen their chances of claiming a place in the last 16 of the Conference League.

First-half goals from Christantus Uche, Eddie Nketiah and Yeremy Pino put Palace in complete control, with the only surprise being they could not add any goals after the break.

With the three points quickly secured, Palace were able to then rest key players.

Daichi Kamada, Adam Wharton and Pino were all taken off at half-time, with Nketiah being replaced midway through the second half. Glasner was also able to hand a debut to 17-year-old striker Benji Casey.

Palace, who won the FA Cup last season to qualify for European football for the first time, are now ninth in the league phase with one match to go, at home against Finnish side KuPS next Thursday.

The top eight sides will move straight into the last 16, while those placed between ninth and 24th will play in the two-legged knockout play-off round.

  10. Shelbourne 0-3 Crystal Palace: What Glasner and Nketiah saidpublished at 22:16 GMT 11 December 2025

Crystal Palace boss Oliver Glasner, speaking to TNT Sports: "Credit to the players and the team for their attitude. The pitch wasn't really in the best condition, playing against a team who wants to show up, and I think we played a very good game in the first half.

"Second half, we spoke at half-time to keep the pace high. We created many chances, but unfortunately we missed a few.

"I think it was against a team that defends so deep. It was our best game, scoring three goals and having a clean sheet. A very good night for us.

"Of course, important for a striker is scoring goals, but he also assisted one.

"Eddie [Nketiah] is the same, he scored one and Yeremy [Pino] scored one. All three who played upfront scored and assisted each other. That is how it should be.

"Christantus deserved it. He showed up against Fulham. He showed he can help us and he can score goals.

"That is now for him, maybe the starting moment at Crystal Palace."

On resting players: "We took three players off who have played many minutes in games.

"It is important for players to stay in the rhythm. That is why we played Hughes and Lerma.

"Really everything went how we planned it, so yes, a good night."

On Palace's upcoming opponents, Man City: "They also had a game yesterday evening at Madrid, so maybe almost the same circumstances.

"Yes, they have one more day to rest, but it is our challenge. I said to the players we will go for the win against Man City.

"It will be a great Sunday afternoon, and we're looking forward to this game."

Forward Eddie Nketiah, speaking to TNT Sports: "Always nice to get on the scoresheet, always nice to get a win. We started really strong, but we are just happy to get the three points.

"I am blessed, and I thank god for being back on the pitch - grateful to be back out there. Happy to score goals and wining games.

"Whether we are playing or on the bench, when we get our time, we all know we can contribute. We have to keep going and keep pushing.

"We have to keep believing. We want to go all the way in this competition.

"I am getting closer. With every minute I play I am getting more sharper."

On the fans enjoying themselves: "Rightly so. I heard the Guinness is alright down here!"

  14. Could Sarr absence kick-start Nketiah's Palace career?published at 13:32 GMT 11 December 2025

    Tom McCoy
    BBC Sport journalist

The image displays a statistical comparison of footballer Eddie Nketiah's career performance while playing for Crystal Palace and Arsenal.
- Nketiah played 50 games (14 starts) for Crystal Palace and 168 games (70 starts) for Arsenal.
- He scored 10 goals for Palace and 38 goals for Arsenal.
- His minutes per goal were almost identical: 185 for Palace and 184 for Arsenal.
- His shot conversion rate was slightly higher at Arsenal (15.5%) compared to Crystal Palace (13.9%).

Eddie Nketiah has had to bide his time since joining Crystal Palace in August 2024, starting only 14 matches in all competitions.

Now, though, he has the chance to earn an extended run in the side - albeit in an unfamiliar role as Ismaila Sarr's deputy.

Sarr, who has missed the past few games through injury, is set to join Senegal for the Africa Cup of Nations next week and could be absent for up to a month, depending on their progress. He and Yeremy Pino usually operate as the two 'number 10s' in Palace's 3-4-2-1 system - an area where squad depth is notably thin.

Daichi Kamada has also featured there, but the Japan international – still without a Premier League goal – offers little attacking threat. That is an issue for a side already heavily reliant on Jean-Philippe Mateta's firepower. Getafe loanee Christantus Uche is another option but has yet to start, with all nine of his Palace appearances coming from the bench.

Nketiah is naturally a number nine but he took up Sarr's position during Sunday's 2-1 win at Fulham, making his first Premier League start of the season. He marked the occasion – his 50th appearance for the club in all competitions – with a well-taken goal and later said he was "getting back into a rhythm."

Finding that rhythm without regular starts has been a recurring challenge for the Lewisham-born forward. Having spent much of his Arsenal career as an impact substitute, he moved to south London to "take the next step" – yet has largely played second-fiddle to Mateta.

If he can thrive in a deeper role, now could be his time to shine.

  15. Glasner on Munoz's surgery, Mateta's injury & academy playerspublished at 19:38 GMT 10 December 2025

Crystal Palace boss Oliver Glasner has been speaking to the media before Thursday's Conference League game against Shelbourne at Tallaght Stadium (kick-off 20:00 GMT).

Here are the key lines from his news conference:

    • Glasner confirmed Jean-Philippe Mateta and Daniel Munoz are both unavailable for Thursday's match with the latter due to undergo surgery that will keep him out for a few weeks: "Always when you undergo surgery, you never know. We are always cautious. It doesn't look so serious."

    • "We have 10 games until January 10th, so this is our challenge for this group."

    • However, Mateta's injury is less serious and he should be back in training on Friday and ready for the weekend.

    • Asked who will play in Munoz's place, Glasner said he "likes to be creative" with his solutions, adding that he could play a winger or an inverted player in place of the Colombia full-back.

    • On the prospect of youngsters like Joel Drakes-Thomas getting game time in Ireland: "I don't know about tomorrow but they have talent and that's why they are part of the squad."

    • On Thursday's opponents Shelbourne: "It's tricky for them because their season has ended. They are not in the rhythm anymore. They ended the season in third place, but are a very physical team."

    • Glasner recognised that physicality could cause Palace problems: "They don't concede a lot [by] playing in a 3-5-2 low block, very compact. It won't be easy to find the gaps. They defend their box with eight players and there won't be a lot of space. They are direct to their strikers and are aggressive in second balls."

  16. Is Mitchell's England case stronger than ever?published at 09:14 GMT 9 December 2025

    Alex Pewter
    Fan writer

Oliver Glasner finally had to face life, however briefly, without Daniel Munoz on Sunday. The Austrian manager often speaks about needing to find solutions to problems in football, and on this occasion, it was a tandem of academy graduates.

There was a mere 12 years between the senior debuts of Nathaniel Clyne and Tyrick Mitchell at Palace, but similarities all the same. Diminutive figures, thrown to the wolves as young players in difficult circumstances.

Yet both had the agility and recovery speed to compensate for a lack of experience and, most importantly, no fear when it came to defending.

Palace fans never got to see the peak of Clyne, and the England caps that came with it, but at least got a second chapter when he returned.

However, with Mitchell, he may be having his best season to date. He continues to flourish in a more attacking role, built on the defensive foundations set in place under the tutelage of Roy Hodgson and Ray Lewington.

His 184th Premier League appearance against Fulham takes him to sixth on the all-time list of appearance makers for Palace in the English top-flight. He is on course to be fifth by the end of the season, and one of only seven former academy players or apprentices to have made it to triple figures at the highest level for Palace.

One of the men on that select list, Gareth Southgate, gave Mitchell his England debut in 2022, only to steer away from a specialist left back at the Euros in 2024.

With a World Cup on the horizon, there is a different manager in charge, but will Thomas Tuchel finally make space for the best one-on-one defender in his position?

It's becoming harder to deny his case.
