  3. Tottenham Hotspur 1-2 Aston Villa: What Emery saidpublished at 20:36 GMT 10 January

    Unai EmeryImage source, Getty Images

Aston Villa manager Unai Emery speaking to BBC Match of the Day after their FA Cup victory over Tottenham: "The first 45 minutes, we controlled the game like we planned. We created chances, we scored two goals, we dominated and we defended very well. The second half, Spurs started pushing more, they scored a goal. Progressively in the second half, we were feeling better on the field. Again, good positioning and dominating with the ball. Not creating big chances but getting the control of the game like we planned and how we did in the first half.

"Of course, in 90 minutes overall, I think we deserved to get this win and of course how the players responded on the field, showed the mentality we're building is really fantastic."

On his midfield: "Fantastic. Both players fantastic, and today played 90 minutes. Of course, the qualities and the skills of Buendia are really helping us a lot. And today, playing 90 minutes, with his versatile position, playing in a left side and inside as a 10, we did both during the match. In each position he's performing very well and his commitment to help, get his task done and focus, overall, is really fantastic.

"Especially today, the performance of Morgan [Rogers] and Buendia was really fantastic, and each one can feel comfortable playing with their qualities."

On making six changes: "Yes, we need players. We're in the Premier League, the Europa League, and this competition we are respecting a lot. Because last year we played the semi-final. There are thousands of supporters here with us giving us responsibility. The FA Cup is a way for a trophy, a way for Europe as well. Secondly, how we are managing the squad, different players, different moments, some players injured, some players coming back from injury like Pau Torres, and we need players for the next matches, the next competition, Premier League, Europa League, FA Cup."

    • Emi Buendia scored his first ever FA Cup goal in what was his eighth appearance in the competition. He's now scored six goals across all competitions this season, his best return in a single campaign for Aston Villa.

Ollie Watkins celebrates Image source, Getty Images

Aston Villa's comfort in taking a two-goal lead almost led to a slip-up against a vastly inferior Spurs side.

They were deservedly in command, but a complacent and sloppy start after the break offered the home side hope when there should have been none.

Emery's team were too classy and too powerful for Spurs in a dominant opening, a superiority emphasised by two outstanding team goals from Buendia and Rogers.

Villa carved Spurs up far too easily, but just when it looked like they would cruise into the fourth round they took their foot off the pedal, threatening to undo all their earlier good work.

Instead of calm, Villa suddenly panicked in defence, giving the hosts and supporters belief that a comeback could be fashioned from the wreckage of the first half.

They showed some fight to regain their composure as they added this to their list of notable victories this term, completing a double at Spurs having also beaten them in the league back in October.

  8. Tottenham v Aston Villa: Key stats and player infopublished at 08:16 GMT 10 January

    Noel Sliney
    BBC Sport senior journalist

While Tottenham boss Thomas Frank is under increasing scrutiny, his opposite number on Saturday continues to enjoy adulation from supporters and plaudits from the media.

Unai Emery has defied stringent spending restrictions and Aston Villa's longest winless league start in 56 years to guide the team to third place, with a 10-point cushion over fifth.

Although Villa have been reborn since Emery's arrival in late 2022, their only major silverware since becoming European champions in 1982 is a couple of League Cups in the mid-1990s. Last season, they beat Spurs to make it past the FA Cup fourth round for the first time since reaching the 2015 final.

    Did you know?

    • These two clubs have met in 12 FA Cup ties – Tottenham have won seven, including en route to lifting the trophy in 1921, 1961, 1962 and 1982.

    • Spurs have progressed from 18 of their past 19 FA Cup third-round ties, including 11 in a row since a 2-0 loss at Arsenal in 2014.

    • This is Villa's fifth consecutive away fixture in London – a loss and draw have followed two wins.

Key Spurs players - Richarlison and Micky Van de Ven

Tottenham's eight-goal top scorer this season, Richarlison has not scored in any of his nine appearances against Aston Villa. Frank commented on his effectiveness off the ball compared with Randal Kolo Muani, who has been moved wide lately. Richarlison is outperforming his xG this season by 2.68.

Meanwhile, Van de Ven has been the standout performer this season after a change in fitness fortunes. He has played the most minutes of any Spurs player, while only Richarlison has more goals than him. The defender is now a Netherlands regular with 17 caps.

    Team news

Tottenham winger Mohammed Kudus has been ruled out until April with the thigh injury he sustained last weekend. Rodrigo Bentancur is facing a spell on the sidelines after suffering a hamstring injury during Wednesday's defeat by Bournemouth, while Lucas Bergvall was also injured and will be assessed. Destiny Udogie and Dominic Solanke are back in training but not expected to feature.

For Villa, goalkeeper Emi Martinez is out because of the calf injury that forced him off at halftime in midweek. Pau Torres returned to the matchday squad against Crystal Palace and fellow centre-back Tyrone Mings could be involved, along with new signing Alysson.

Poor old Thomas Frank. He looked so happy at Brentford but Spurs have a habit of turning happy managers into total miseries.

He really needs a win here, and a good run in the cup too, but when you compare the two teams, and the way they are playing, then there's only one winner here - and that's Villa.

    Sutton's prediction: 1-3

  10. Set-piece coach should have been sent off against Chelsea, panel sayspublished at 16:14 GMT 9 January

    Football issues correspondent

Aston Villa set-piece coach Austin MacPhee should have been sent off in last month's game against Chelsea, the Premier League's Key Match Incidents Panel has said.

Villa were leading in the sixth minute of stoppage time when the ball went out of play close to the dugouts.

As a Chelsea player prepared to take a throw-in, MacPhee rolled another ball onto the pitch to delay the restart.

Chelsea players reacted angrily because play had to be stopped.

The fourth official, Tim Robinson, advised referee Stuart Attwell that MacPhee should be booked.

However, yellow cards for delaying the restart only apply to players. The panel unanimously voted that MacPhee should have been sent off.

The panel said: "For a 'team official' in the technical area e.g. manager or coach, a clear action to delay the restart of play for the opposing team, or deliberately throwing/kicking an object onto the field of play, requires a red card".

Ultimately, Villa held on to win the game 2-1.

The match ended in angry scenes with Chelsea charged with "failing to ensure personnel positioned around the technical area after the final whistle did not behave in an improper and/or provocative and/or abusive way".

In a separate incident during the same game, it was alleged a bottle had been thrown at the Villa bench.

  11. Emery on Martinez, transfer window plans & Tottenhampublished at 14:42 GMT 9 January

    Katie Stafford
    BBC Sport journalist

Aston Villa boss Unai Emery has been speaking to the media before Saturday's FA Cup game against Tottenham at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium (kick-off 17:45 GMT).

Here are the key lines from his news conference:

    • Emery praised Emi Martinez's "commitment" to play midweek with "a small injury," but said it was in the goalkeeper's best interest to replace him for the second half with Marco Bizot.

    • He did not say if Martinez will be available to start against Tottenham with Bizot "ready to play when we need him, which is really fantastic."

    • Emery said they will compete "no differently" in the FA Cup to how they do in any other competition. Emery added: "Same idea, standard, style and quality of performance. We must be so, so demanding and consistent."

    • On opponents Tottenham: "Very difficult with the players and coach they have. We are playing at their stadium so they will have their supporters with them."

    • He said "the draw is not the best" because they face a Premier League team, but they are hopeful they can show their "good form" in north London.

    • On Villa's transfer window plans: "The club is working with the people responsible around possibilities. In case we can improve our squad we can do it, or in case someone is leaving as well."

  12. 'Whoever Emery selects, Villa will be in it to win it'published at 15:10 GMT 8 January

    Mike Taylor
    BBC Radio WM reporter

Unai Emery, manager of Aston Villa, remonstrates with referee Andy MadleyImage source, Getty Images

"This point is a very good point," said Unai Emery after Aston Villa and Crystal Palace battled each other, sometimes almost literally, to a standstill on Wednesday night.

"It's not enough, we are ambitious and we wanted to win, but I think the team showed the mentality we are building."

Not enough in the context of trying to chase down Arsenal, perhaps, but a solid draw against a team that have caused Villa so many problems in recent years was no calamity.

Villa remain, although the outsiders of three, still close enough to be credible title contenders.

More important for their strategic future is the gap between themselves and the likely cut-off for Champions League qualification, now standing at about 10 points depending on how many spaces England are allocated in next season's tournament. The realistic chance to win the Europa League also gives Villa a second shot at that target. Achieving it by either means would make this season successful.

Villa's current position is similar to the same stage two seasons ago. After 21 games in 2024 they were on 43 points, five off the lead, and looking good in a European tournament, then the Conference League.

That season ended successfully with Champions League qualification, despite Villa looking exhausted by the end of April. They had done enough despite winning none of their last four games, but lost in the Conference semi-final to an Olympiacos side they might well have outmatched if fresher.

Villa's squad now looks both better and deeper than it did at that time, although still perhaps vulnerable to a couple of injuries to key players in certain positions. The reappearance of Pau Torres on the teamsheet on Wednesday night was welcome. Emery and his staff have again proved their ability to marshal their resources through an intense workload over recent months, but his choices for the FA Cup tie at Tottenham on Saturday (17:45 GMT) will be instructive.

"We have players wishing to play," said Emery after the Palace game, "and we are still building the team and our structure and how we can be competitive for the Premier League, the FA Cup and the Europa League."

It may appear the clear third priority for now, but their fans ache to see Villa turn potential into a real trophy and anyone hearing from Emery after previous FA Cup defeats - like last year's semi-final - can have no doubt how hard he takes a loss in any context.

Whoever he selects, Villa will be in it to win it.

  13. Crystal Palace 0-0 Aston Villa - the fans' verdictpublished at 09:40 GMT 8 January

    Your opinions graphic

    This content isn't available anymore.

    There was an error

We asked for your thoughts after Wednesday's Premier League game between Crystal Palace and Aston Villa.

Here are some of your comments:

    Palace fans

Tresbon: Palace down to the bare bones but it's the first time in weeks a team hasn't overrun us in the final 20 minutes. Perhaps, the curse of Euro Thursdays is hitting Villa too. Jaydee Canvot came of age here - he reads the game very well.

Robert: I felt this draw was like a victory against high-flying Villa! Half of our squad are missing through injury and yet we hung on to get this valuable point!

Phil: Not classic Palace but a very well-earned point on the back of a very, very difficult period. The FA Cup fixture on Saturday and then Oliver Glasner will have time to get players fit and hopefully some new players in so they can press on for the second half of the season.

Ann: With so many matches coming thick and fast, the players must be finding it really difficult both mentally and physically to be prepared with such a small squad.

    Villa fans

Prit: Draw was a fair result, especially as Villa couldn't make their pressure in the first half count. We looked tired in the second half and the midfield was running on empty. Palace away is always a difficult game for us so if we can't win it then let's take a draw and move on to the next game.

Toppy: Overall, a fair result. In the first half, we looked in control but lost our way in the second. Palace looked much more threatening after the break, and it became one of those games that could have gone either way. On the plus side, we didn't lose to our bogey team, kept a clean sheet, and our rivals dropped points. However, Jadon Sancho doesn't look great, and some of our players need to practice their shooting. Hopefully, Unai Emery can find some attacking reinforcements this January too.

Matt: What have I just witnessed? Where was the urgency? The press? Unbelievable. A weakened, vulnerable and out-of-sorts Palace were there for the taking. Opportunity missed.

Keith: The performance from Villa was OK, but Palace made it difficult. As always, we could have won the game, but we were not clinical in front of goal. But again, a clean sheet and a point is always welcome. Jadon Sancho should never have started - he is an expensive liability and should be returned to Man Utd as soon as possible.

    Did you know?

    • Aston Villa boss Unai Emery remains without a victory against Oliver Glasner in seven top-flight games (D2 L5), his worst winless record against any manager.

    • Villa's run of 10 Premier League games in which they scored came to an end, with them drawing a blank for the first time since a 2-0 defeat at Liverpool in November.

  16. Aston Villa analysis: Villa miss chances to put pressure on Arsenalpublished at 22:40 GMT 7 January

    Alex Brotherton
    BBC Sport journalist

Ollie Watkins of Aston VillaImage source, Getty Images

Before Wednesday's goalless draw with Crystal Palace, Villa boss Unai Emery spoke of the difficulty of facing Palace at Selhurst Park, but he will have been disappointed not to close the gap on league leaders Arsenal.

Ollie Watkins would have backed himself to score against a tired and threadbare Palace defence, especially given he had scored four goals in his previous three outings.

But the England striker was frustrated by saves, blocks and the woodwork despite taking four shots.

Even after Palace enjoyed a spell of dominance, Villa could and perhaps should have won it, but their attackers lacked the kind of composure they have shown buckets of in front of goal this term.

Manchester City's 1-1 draw with Brighton on Wednesday meant a Villa win would have sent them second in the table, but a draw leaves the two closest title challengers to Arsenal level on 43 points and five points off the pace.

Graphic showing Crystal Palace starting XI

Oliver Glasner is forced into making two changes to the Crystal Palace side that lost to Newcastle on Sunday.

Jefferson Lerma (concussion) and Nathaniel Clyne (adductor) join the club's growing injury list, and are placed by Jaydee Canvot and Justin Devenny.

Chris Richards returns but is only fit enough for the bench.

Crystal Palace XI: Henderson, Canvot, Lacroix, Guehi, Devenny, Wharton, Hughes, Mitchell, Johnson, Pino, Mateta.

Subs: Benitez, Uche, Sosa, Richards, Rodney, King, Benamar, Casey, Drakes-Thomas.

Unai Emery also makes two changes following Aston Villa's defeat of Nottingham Forest at the weekend.

Lucas Digne replaces Ian Maatsen at left-back, while Jadon Sancho starts on the wing in place of Emiliano Buendia.

Aston Villa XI: Martinez, Cash, Konsa, Lindelof, Digne, Kamara, Tielemans, McGinn, Rogers, Sancho, Watkins.

Subs: Bizot, Buendia, Torres, Garcia, Malen, Jimoh-Aloba, Maatsen, Bogarde, Hemmings.
