    18. Belgium (Group G. Drew 1-1 with Egypt)

Needed an own goal to draw with an admittedly strong Egypt side. Created good chances and their toughest group match is now behind them.

    17. Cape Verde (Group H. Drew 0-0 with Spain)

    16. Scotland (Group C. Beat Haiti 1-0)

Good result. Poor performance. But perhaps that's what 28 years of pressure will do to a team.

    15. Japan (Group F. Drew 2-2 with Netherlands)

Impressive fight to snatch a draw from jaws of defeat. But we expected more ambition from the perennial dark horses.

  2. Ronaldo's performance fell flatpublished at 14:14 BST 18 June

    Portugal 1-1 DR Congo

Al-Nassr striker Cristiano Ronaldo, who is closing in on 1,000 career goals for club and country, had two chances in quick succession midway through the second half for Portugal.

Half-time substitute Francisco Conceicao twice cut the ball back to him from the right.

The first was played slightly behind Ronaldo, who sent a tame effort past the near post. While the ball was in a better position for the second opportunity, the forward was put under pressure by the DR Congo defence and his finish flew wide.

Ronaldo has now gone 10 consecutive games at major tournaments without finding the net since a penalty against Ghana at the 2022 World Cup.

His tally of 25 touches was the fewest of Portugal's outfield players who played the full match.

The Leopards had to kick off their first World Cup match in 52 years without their most famous supporter- the "statue man".

Lumumba Vea, who's real name is Michel Nkuka Mboladinga, has become famous for standing still for 90 minutes during matches, in tribute to DR Congo’s first prime minister, Patrice Lumumba.

It is reported Vea couldn’t make it DR Congo's opener due to travel‑clearance and documentation delays.

The good news? He’s expected to join the team for the last two group games.

    23. DR Congo (Group K. Drew 1-1 with Portugal)

"Shocked Portugal with some fantastic, organised defending. And they looked threatening on the break."

    22. Croatia (Group L. Lost 4-2 to England)

    21. Portugal (Group K. Drew 1-1 with DR Congo)

"They still have Cristiano Ronaldo. And a team that is burdened by his desire to be at the centre of everything."

    20. Senegal (Group I. Lost 3-1 to France)

"No shame in losing to France. Didn't concede until the 66th minute and could even have been leading but for Nicolas Jackson striking the post in the first half."

Harsh on Ecuador. They hit the bar twice in the first half in a very even game against a good side. Just lacked being clinical but were far better than Algeria, Haiti, Jordan, Iraq etc

Cristiano Ronaldo. Karim Benzema. Neymar. Sadio Mane.

The list of world-class talents who have chosen to play in the Saudi Pro League has risen over the years.

But could the presence of these multiple Champions League and Ballon d'Or winners be finally benefiting the nation that has been selected to host the 2034 World Cup?

Over the years the Saudi Arabia national team has struggled on the world stage.

At the 2002 World Cup they suffered a humiliating 8-0 defeat against Germany in their first group game in Japan. They exited the tournament without a point - or a goal.

However, the performance of the national team has steadily improved since the Saudi Pro League started throwing money at attracting big names.

On Monday, they launched their seventh appearance at the World Cup with a hard-fought 1-1 draw against Uruguay in Miami.

Are the days of 8-0 thumpings for Saudi Arabia on the world stage a thing of the past?

  8. Amad shows his best for his countrypublished at 13:49 BST 18 June

    Ivory Coast 1-0 Ecuador

Manchester United winger Amad Diallo scored a superb 90th-minute winner as Ivory Coast beat Ecuador in Philadelphia.

It was a stunning finish as the substitute opened his left foot to divert the ball into the corner after a powerful run from Wilfried Singo - and it ended a 19-game unbeaten run stretching for almost two years for Ecuador.

Amad was a surprise exclusion from Ivory Coast's starting line-up on their return to the World Cup for the first time in 12 years.

But he made a major impact with the winner which gives them a huge chance to qualify out of Group E - which also includes Germany and Curacao - and reach the knockout stages for the first time in their history.

"We came here to make history," said Amad. "We still have two more matches ahead of us, and we need to approach them with the same mentality and try to win them."

    33. Ivory Coast (Group E. Beat Ecuador 1-0)

Needed an own goal and a penalty to win. Hardly inspiring. Next up, world champions Argentina.

    31. Turkey (Group D. Lost 2-0 to Australia)

    30. Uruguay (Group H. Drew 1-1 with Saudi Arabia)

Larin's equaliser earns Canada first ever World Cup point

While fellow host nations United States and Mexico managed a win in their opening games, Canada had to settle for a draw.

Substitute Cyle Larin made an instant impact as his goal rescued the point for Canada in a 1-1 draw against Bosnia-Herzegovina.

Southampton striker Larin had only been on the pitch for just over two minutes when he superbly spun away from Tarik Muharemovic and fired past Nikola Vasilj, aided by a slight deflection.

It was the first time Canada had avoided defeat in the World Cup finals, after they had been beaten in all three games in 1986 and then again in 2022.

    37. Bosnia-Herzegovina (Group B. Drew 1-1 with Canada)

    36. Jordan (Group J. Lost to Austria 3-1)

    35. Algeria (Group J. Lost to Argentina 3-0)

    34. Ghana (Group L. Beat Panama 1-0)

"Looked poor in large periods against Panama but were saved by a 95th-minute winner. Will struggle against better opposition. England and Croatia to come."

Switzerland stunned by late Qatar equaliser

Qatar scored a dramatic stoppage-time equaliser as they fought back to draw against Switzerland to claim their first-ever point at a World Cup finals.

Boualem Khoukhi headed home Homam El Amin's cross in the 94th minute to spark wild celebrations among Julen Lopetegui's squad.

It delivered a remarkable conclusion to a one-sided affair that Switzerland had dominated and had looked likely to be settled by Breel Embolo's first-half penalty.

Qatar had a disappointing 2022 World Cup campaign as hosts, exiting in the group stage with three defeats from as many matches.

  13. Uzbekistan history squashed by Colombia qualitypublished at 13:20 BST 18 June

Uzbekistan, coached by Italian World Cup-winning defender Fabio Cannavaro, made history against Colombia when Abbosbek Fayzullaev scored the country's first goal at a World Cup.

The debutants had "guts" in the game and managed to equalise in the 60th minute, but Colombia's quality shone through and quickly regained their lead.

Uzbekistan, 50th in the world rankings, nearly made it 2-2, but Akmal Mozgovoy curled a shot just wide in the 90th minute, before Colombia substitute Jaminton Campaz headed in a third goal late on.

    Germany 7-1 Curacao

All the emotions from Curacao manager

Curacao might have suffered a 7-1 defeat by Germany in the opener but despite that, they have already scripted their own history.

With a population of just 156,000 and a land mass smaller than the Isle of Man, they surpassed Iceland as the smallest nation to play at a World Cup.

Their opening match also made their manager Dick Advocaat the oldest coach in World Cup history at the age of 78.

Advocaat had made history last year when the Dutch coach led the Caribbean island to the finals but stepped down three months later because of his daughter's health.

He then made a surprise return after his successor Fred Rutten resigned just a month out from their World Cup debut and the Dutchman was visibly emotional on the touchline as he took charge of the island nation against the Germans.

Tunisia sacked their head coach Sabri Lamouchi following their defeat in their opening World Cup 2026 fixture.

Sweden inflicted a 5-1 loss on Tunisia in Sunday's Group F tie at the Estadio Monterrey in Guadalupe, Mexico.

Reports afterwards suggested Lamouchi had been immediately sacked, but sources told BBC Sport that the 54-year-old took training on Monday.

The Tunisian Football Association later confirmed that the Frenchman's contract has been terminated by "mutual agreement".

Former Morocco and Saudi Arabia manager Herve Renard has been appointed head coach of the side until the end of the tournament.

Lamouchi's departure means he is the first manager in World Cup history to be sacked after just one game.

Those who played in the Croatia win will take part in a light recovery session at the team's hotel in Kansas. There is a 15 minute open training session planned to take place with a smaller group of players who didn't play.

However, England boss Thomas Tuchel did say in his MD-1 presser that England players not involved will play a match behind closed doors "on the day after the Croatia game" against local opposition.
