I think this is going to be a really interesting game. Liverpool have European football to manage but they have a very, very strong squad. And Brighton have been very adaptable under Fabian Hurzeler this season, they have many different guises and it will be interesting to see how they approach this one.

I'm pretty confident that the two older lads [Virgil Van Dijk and Mohammed Salah] will sign. They're at a stage where it's difficult to move on to a better club than Liverpool.

When I played, the two only clubs where players would want to move on to were the Spanish giants but I don't really see that now for Virgil and Mo - who will be desperate to break as many records as he can.

Trent is in a different situation, so that's the one most people will be worried about with the interest from Real Madrid and the fact that Dani Carvajal has done his ACL.

Newcastle United

Newcastle goalscorer Alexander Isak speaking to TNT Sports: "That was massive, against a big team. It means a lot to the fans that we can win this game."

On scoring 12 goals in his past 12 home league games at St James' Park: "It's special of course, our fans are amazing every game, win or lose. So it gives you an extra boost. I have been successful here so hopefully I can keep going."

On his goal and the cross from Anthony Gordon: "The cross was amazing, I just had to jump and put my head on the ball, so credit to him."

On taking his chance when it came: "Important. Arsenal have a strong defence and so it is a difficult task but I'm happy we could score today and keep a clean sheet."

And on the importance of Newcastle using this victory as a springboard: "We've had a bad spell but hopefully this win can be a bit of an icebreaker for us."

Former Ipswich midfielder Matt Holland, speaking to Football Focus: "I would say we've been a little bit unfortunate to be honest. Of the nine games we've played so far in the Premier League I'd say we've had a bad one and a half. The game against Everton and half the game against West Ham - other than that we've been competitive.

"We've had a difficult start as well, played six of the top 10 already. We're a little bit unlucky not to have more points on the board I'd say.

"Supporters have been absolutely incredible. I know it's been a successful period but everyone wants to come and watch the team at the moment. The fans have got a massive part to play, I know they'll be with us all the way."

One of the biggest talking points this week around Liverpool has been about star trio Trent Alexander-Arnold, Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah all being out of contract next summer.

They could all sign pre-contracts with other teams in just two months time.

Arne Slot doesn't seem worried though.

"At the moment all three of them are in a good place, all of them perform really, really, really well and there are ongoing discussions," said the manager yesterday.

Most of the Liverpool fans I talked to outside Anfield earlier were not concerned either - although one did think Salah might go to Saudi Arabia.

Ex-Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher, meanwhile, told BBC Radio 5 Live last night he thinks Alexander-Arnold is "the one people are most worried with" - with Real Madrid linked.

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has said even fit players are in pain as they push through the fixture schedule and his squad now faces an injury "emergency".

Guardiola said he has doubts over several players for Saturday's trip to Bournemouth after suffering problems in Wednesday's 2-1 EFL Cup defeat at Tottenham.

Savinho went off on a stretcher with an ankle injury, while Manuel Akanji injured his calf in the warm-up.

After the game, Guardiola said he had just 13 fit players with long-term absentees in Rodri and Oscar Bobb, and injury concerns over Kevin de Bruyne, Kyle Walker, Jeremy Doku, Jack Grealish, Akanji and Josko Gvardiol.

On Friday he did not say who could return for the trip to Bournemouth saying he had "many doubts" but confirmed Brazil winger Savinho had not suffered a fracture.

"Today, almost all of the players play with pain," said Guardiola. "There are moments when you have to be careful but sometimes you have to play.

"You have to deal with it in modern football or you can't sustain games every three days at a top club."

Having only lost one of their first 25 Premier League games in 2024 (W21 D3), Arsenal have since lost two of their last three (D1). The Gunners have lost successive away matches in the league for the first time since May 2022.

A deserved win for Newcastle. Hard work, a real team effort and they looked more dangerous on the attack. Arsenal were too slow, did not carried too much of a goal threat. Declan Rice could have and probably should have got his side a result late on, but Newcastle were deserved winners.
