It is a long tournament and there are some very, very organised teams. At this level you are not going to get it all your own way and go out and put in a sparkling performance in every game. You are goingt o be asked different questions and England struggled to find the answers tonight against Ghana.

They were too slow. They didn't offer enough, particularly in wide positions. We hit the first man too mnay times when we did try to cross the ball. Everything was just too passive and safe, the easy option.

Rather than taking the gamble to pass into midfield or the gamble to take someone on one v one, too many times we went back inside. It was too slow and they didn't do enough to win the game.

It's a game we knew we had loads of possession, we did and they defended well in a low compact block and made it difficult to play in the middle or the pitch, so the game was outside and one v one duels. I think both ends of the half in the first and second half we got some momentum there and chances.

"It's a game we could've walked away 1-0, 2-0 and moved on.It was never going to be the prettiest game because of the way they played. Credit to them, they defended well, dangerous on the counter-attack. Overall, we defended that pretty well. They didn't have many chances. We take the point and move on."

On what was missing today: "Maybe just a little bit of quality but these games are tough. I've played in these types of games, a lot of us have played in these types of games. Sometimes you need an early goal to open up the match, for them to come out but as the game goes longer at 0-0, they believe more and defend more with their heart. We still had chances towards the end there. I'm backing myself to sore more often than not. One of those but I've lived the striker life long enough to know they're not always going to go in. I back myself nine times out of 10 but it just didn't fall my way today.

"We wanted that second win today but it weren't to be. But overall we're in a good position and we look forward to the next one."

In this tournament most of the time they have gone with the on-field decision, we had one last night with the Argentina game where it was overturned, but the general thrust of the tournament is such that they will stick with the on-field decision unless it is clearly, clearly wrong.

On Konsa's challenge on Prince Adu in the second half:

England were chasing the game, they were trying to score the goal but you still need that protection behind you. On another day, that could have been a penalty.

We had our hearts in our mouths when we saw Konsa make that challenge. As an England fan I am delighted that it wasn't given, but I have to be honest, for me this should have been referred to the referee.

Konsa makes absolutely no contact at all with the ball, he brings down his opponent. He is airborne, he is out of control, he makes contact with the attacker. For me this was a penalty kick.

England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford, speaking to BBC, said: "We knew it was going to be tough against Ghana. We knew they would play counter-attacking football. They were really hard to break down, we had our chances and we had to be wary of counter attacks, but that's football and we needed to get the first goal.

"They played a good game, but we have got to be happy. We're still top of the group, now focus on Panama and top the group. Ghana have players like Semenyo so you have to be ready to be called upon and that's what I felt I did.

"We would've loved to win the game, but we have not lost. It's tournament football and still in our hands to top the group. You play different teams every game and we just needed that goal, it's as simple as that. We limited them to so little chances.

"We never managed to get that goal, but that's football."

One of the reasons Tuchel brought Spence in was to perhaps counteract their power on the counter attack with his pace, but in doing that you then lose the quality going forward. Once O'Reilly came on he did more going forward in the last 10-15 minutes than we did for large parts of the game. I'm sure he will make a couple of tweaks and changes at the weekend. Not a disaster but something they are going to have to work on.

England midfielder Declan Rice, speaking to BBC, said: "It is always difficult when you play against 11 behind the ball as deep as they were, but you have to find solutions. In the last 10 minutes we were unlucky not to score.

"We still have a great chance to top the group against Panama so positivity all round. They were very compact, 5-4-1 off the ball and tight spaces to play through, but on the other hand we can do more with the ball.

"You have to give credit to Ghana. It's tough and they are good players so it was never going to be an easy game. We have one more group game to top the group so we have to be positive.

"Loads of top nations draw the first game so there is no need to be negative or downbeat. We will stay positive."

England laboured in attack tonight despite dominating possession.

They had 78.8% of the ball - the highest share of any team on record in a World Cup match who failed to score.

This was always going to be the case after that performance against Croatia.

Anything less than a full-throttle win and England are accused of the opener being a one-off performance.

But their place in the last-32 looks all but decided and they can still finish top of the group. They take on Panama on Saturday in their final Group L match.

It's not a disaster because England will get out of the group and it's likely they will beat Panama and top the group.

I think that type of performance does act as a reality check. It will be interesting to have interviews and see what the players say. They were pretty level after the Croatia game and I'm sure it'll be the same.

A point in the grand scheme of things will help England progress through the tournament.

You're always hoping for that energy and that performance that we had against Croatia in the second half. These games are so difficult when the teams sit back.

You have to break them down, and you have to find the space. For me, the key was getting crosses into the box. That is where all the chances came from.

That was a typical Carlos Queiroz performance. Ghana were excellent and they were disciplined.

England boss Thomas Tuchel on Harry Kane's chance: "Normally, a clear goal for us. It's a big chance and then another chance. It would've been deserved. We knew it would be difficult. They went even more defensive than in the first match; they defended in a 4-5-1. We found our intensity the longer the half went but we couldn't get the reward.

"We were very good at defending the counter-attacks for most of the match. We have to pay a huge amount of attention to that. Subs were very good.

On change of plans for Panama: "I have no idea. Panama is in four days."

The key is we don't get too high and we don't get too low. A difficult performance.

Credit to Ghana - a brilliant gameplan and they could have nicked it.

It could have been worse tonight. The fans are still with them, and we're still with them.

Just a difficult night, but I expect them to go on and perform on Saturday night.

The frustrating thing was that England weren't brave enough. Yes we knew they were coming up against a team that would set up in a low block but I just felt that there were too many safe passes. You need to be more brave when you come up against a team in a low block.

England found it very, very difficult to play against the low block. That's one team that came with only one ambition and that was to keep a clean sheet and come away with a point.

England really did struggle against the low block. They dominated in every category, passes, chances and even shots on goals. There wasn't much wrong with their play on the ball but it was the final third where they lacked.

Croatia are a better side, they brought two medals home from the last two World Cups and they came to beat England and play. England found it very difficult against a lesser team that wanted to kill the game and England didn't have answers today.
