  2. 'I like how my players are responding, we are using everyone'published at 22:31 GMT 11 December 2025

    FT: Basel 1-2 Aston Villa

    Aston Villa

Aston Villa manager Unai Emery speaking to TNT Sports: "I am happy and we knew before the match the difficulties we were facing today. After the last matches, a lot of wars. Brilliant wars for us, after our victory against Arsenal, it is not easy to recover our spirit and structure and mentality to keep the same hard work. We struggled today and the last 10 minutes they were close to drawing but I am happy with how we got this victory. It is difficult to beat them here.

"Our idea at the start of the season was to manage all the players and give them the chance to play and help us. How we are managing it like today, I like how they are responding and how we are building the team with every player.

"It was the plan, to start with Lamar [Bogarde] because they needed fresh legs. Youri can get into the opponent's box and score like he did. Other players as well made an impact. We needed that. We needed them to win duels. In the last 10 minutes, they were pushing and we need our players fighting like they did."

Where Villa are now, it probably doesn't get much better.

I think if Unai Emery starts speaking about a title, it would be too soon.

  5. 'I am very pleased 'published at 22:22 GMT 11 December 2025

    FT: Basel 1-2 Aston Villa

    Aston Villa

Aston Villa midfielder Youri Tielemans speaking to TNT Sports: "Very pleased. It is a tough place to play. The pitch wasn't the best, and you could see that in our game. I think we could have done better in certain phases of the game, but to come home with a win is really good."

On Guessand's goal: "Very pleased for him and some of the other players who can get goals, it is massive for us."

On his goal: "Just tried to hit it on target. The space was there for me to shoot it at the first post. The first goal they conceded as well was on that side, and it is everything together."

On Villa finding ways to win: "Teams are dropping deeper, and to have that space at the edge of the box, I quite like that. We have to carry on and hopefully score more goals from outside and inside the box.

"Where we are now is very good. We have two more games. Two tough games. We just want to win both games and see where we are at. The first two spots would be amazing, but then if not, in the top group and hopefully qualify."

Finally from Crystal Palace boss Oliver Glasner, speaking to TNT Sports about resting players: "We took three players off who have played many minutes in games.

"It is important for players to stay in the rhythm. That is why we played Hughes and Lerma.

"Really everything went how we planned it, so yes, a good night."

On Palace's upcoming opponents, Man City: "They also had a game yesterday evening at Madrid, so maybe almost the same circumstances.

"Yes, they have one more day to rest, but it is our challenge. I said to the players we will go for the win against Man City.

"It will be a great Sunday afternoon, and we're looking forward to this game."

  8. 'A very good night for us' - Glasnerpublished at 22:16 GMT 11 December 2025

    FT: Shelbourne 0-3 Crystal Palace

    Crystal Palace

Crystal Palace boss Oliver Glasner, speaking to TNT Sports: "Credit to the players and the team for their attitude. The pitch wasn't really in the best condition, playing against a team who wants to show up, and I think we played a very good game in the first half.

"Second half, we spoke at half-time to keep the pace high. We created many chances, but unfortunately we missed a few.

"I think it was against a team that defends so deep. It was our best game, scoring three goals and having a clean sheet. A very good night for us.

"Of course, important for a striker is scoring goals, but he also assisted one.

"Eddie [Nketiah] is the same, he scored one and Yeremy [Pino] scored one. All three who played upfront scored and assisted each other. That is how it should be.

"Christantus deserved it. He showed up against Fulham. He showed he can help us and he can score goals.

"That is now for him, maybe the starting moment at Crystal Palace."

In Scotland, Wilfried Nancy has become the first Celtic manager to ever lose his first two games.

They lost 3-0 at home to Roma in the Europa League, having lost to Hearts in the top-of-the-table clash at the weekend.

Evan Ferguson netted twice for the Italian side after a Liam Scales own goal.

Next up is the Scottish League Cup final against St Mirren.

Did Celtic make a mistake in not giving Martin O'Neill these games before the handover? Not for me to say.

It is always a good choice to bring on Tielemans.

The plan has worked out for Emery. You have the starting XI that is not the first XI but they get the win.

They had already been the better team by a margin but when Tielemans came on, he lifted them to another level.
