A late Rapid Vienna goal cancelled out a 30-yard screamer from teenager James Wilson and denied Hearts a comeback victory in the first leg of their Conference League play-off at Tynecastle.

Wilson, 19, came off the bench and ripped a sensational effort into the top corner to turn the tie in favour of last season's Scottish Premiership runners-up, who had trailed at the break when Serge-Philippe Raux-Yao crashed in a header.

But when Josh McPake - another standout on the night - surged into the box and found the net via the challenge of Raux-Yao, then Wilson smashed home, Tynecastle was bouncing to the tune of a rousing comeback.

However, Rapid regained their composure amidst the din and slowly built pressure which paid off when Nikolaus Wurmbrand drilled home after good play down the left by Nicolas Bajlicz.

It was a reminder of Hearts' defensive frailties so far this season, as well as the attacking quality which has been the focus of new boss Vrancken amid a big rebuild at Tynecastle.

They travel to Austria for the second leg without an advantage, but still well in the tie as they bid to secure Conference League football.

Analysis: Scots shine but Hearts' defensive frailties remain

Amid ongoing crisis talk about the lack of native players featuring prominently for Scotland's biggest clubs, it was refreshing to see two domestic talents light up Tynecastle on a big European night.

McPake, the player of the season in St Johnstone's Championship title win last season, fully announced himself as a Hearts player with a display full of pace, trickery, and crucially end product.

Even before he escaped into the box to find the leveller, the 24-year-old was relentless in getting down the left-hand side and flashing balls into the box.

However, it was Wilson who ended up stealing the show with his rocket six minutes after replacing the ineffective Pierre Landry Kabore. It was a statement from the teenager that he has a big part to play, despite talk he may be on the move.

Unfortunately for Vrancken, though, his new-look and makeshift defence continues to leak goals. That's now 19 in just eight games.

They were undone by another set-piece, and Jordi Altena looks uncomfortable defending at right-back.

There is mitigation, of course. Injuries at the back have hampered the Belgian whilst implementing a new attacking style, all while facing a lot of high quality opposition in Benfica, Sturm Graz, and Rapid.

Goalkeeper Beau Reus does look a great signing, though, as he made two more fantastic saves when the game was goalless.

Overall, though, Hearts need to strike more of a balance between attack and defence if they want to make it through this tie, and have a succesful season overall.

What they said

'I'm really proud of my players' - Vrancken on entertaining draw with Rapid Vienna

Hearts head coach Wouter Vrancken: "It's open, and you can see that it's also a good side we play against.

"I think we showed the next step today, I'm really proud of the players because not only were the intentions good with the ball, but there was a lot of energy, intensity in the game and also without the ball.

"When I see the numbers now, physical parameters, it's nice to see because I think they never did it before and we're making steps in that way also.

"That's what I like to see, an energetic style of play.

"They did really good today, especially in the second half and coming back from 0-1 is also showing the mentality they have and the team spirit they show without panicking, just play the game, do the things with the game plan we wanted to play.

"Like I said, I'm really proud of the players, it's just a pity that we don't have the bonus [goal] to go to Vienna next week."

What's next?

Hearts have taken advantage of new SPFL rules to postpone their league match at the weekend, to give them extra time to prepare for the second leg in Austria, which is next Wednesday (17:45 BST).
