We have umpires call in cricket and it seems to work fine. Give it time I think its the correct way to tackle 50/50 calls.

If the ball drops quicker for Morgan Rogers it could have been 2-1 to Villa. They break quickly from a West Ham attack and Youri Tielemans' shot is blocked. The ball takes an age to drop down to Rogers who is ready to volley home and he loses his footing a bit, so the keeper recovers to save his shot.
From the resulting corner Ezri Konsa heads wide.

RE: Martin 18:33. What fans struggle with is why sometimes 'referee's call' is a factor such as this decision and why in others, such as Everton's today, 'referee's call' is not a factor at all even though it was a 50:50 decision at best.

That was worth the entrance fee alone from Mohammed Kudus.
Turned Matty Cash inside and out and executed a little rabona cross into the back post for Tomas Soucek. He just couldn't bring the ball down in time and volleyed the shot over the bar.

A lot of fans are struggling with the "Referee's Call" aspect of VAR this season, and it's only Match Week 1. If the ref didn't give that penalty for West Ham, they wouldn't have got it on an overturn. They got it, and there was no obvious reason to overrule it. It's one of those.

West Ham have lost just one of their last 12 Premier League games against Aston Villa (W6 D5), a 4-1 loss at Villa Park last season.
Aston Villa are winless in their last nine Premier League away games against West Ham (D5 L4), since a 2-1 victory at Upton Park in April 2011.
West Ham have lost on five of the six occasions they’ve begun a Premier League campaign against a side who finished in the previous season’s top four. The only exception was a 2-0 away win at Arsenal in 2015-16.
West Ham have won their opening Premier League match in just one of the last eight seasons (D1 L6), beating Newcastle 4-2 in 2021-22. Indeed, the Hammers have lost their opening game in the Premier League more often than any other side (15).
