  7. Madibo first serious foul play dismissal since 2014published at 09:58 BST 19 June

    Dale Johnson
    Football issues correspondent

Assim Madibo is the first player to be sent off for serious foul play, the technical term for a bad tackle, at the World Cup since Brazil 2014.

That came when Belgium's Steven Defour was sent off for a challenge on South Korea's Kim Shin-wook in the group stage.

After Pierluigi Collina took over as head of referees in 2017, there has been a focus on trying to keep teams with 11 players.

Hence why the last two World Cups only saw four red cards in each.

Since Defour was dismissed 14 players have been shown a red card, of which six were for two cautions.

That leaves eight straight red cards.

Seven were for denying an obvious goal-scoring opportunity, including one for handball, with the other being the dismissal of South Africa's Themba Zwane for violent conduct in the 2026 tournament opener against Mexico.

  10. Could Mexico v England be on the cards?published at 09:55 BST 19 June

    Mexico 1-0 South Korea

Mexico's win over South Korea means the co-hosts will be in Mexico City for both their last-32 and potential last-16 tie, where they could face England if Thomas Tuchel's side win their group and first knockout match.

As things stand, Mexico could be playing Spain in the last 32, if the 2010 winners remain third in Group H.

Canada and Switzerland may have one foot in the last 32, but co-hosts Mexico are officially there with one game to spare.

Mexico's Luis Romo scored the only goal of their 1-0 win over South Korea in Guadalajara.

The midfielder was in the right place at the right time to tap into an empty net after goalkeeper Kim Seung-gyu spilled the ball following a collision with his team-mate Lee Gi-hyuk in the 50th minute.

Mexico had been booed off by home fans following a lacklustre first half, but the result continued their 100% start at the World Cup and confirmed Javier Aguirre's side will advance as Group A winners.

  14. Goalkeeper turned goalscorer - who is Manzambi?published at 09:39 BST 19 June

    Switzerland 4-1 Bosnia-Herzegovina

Canada look almost certain to play in the knockout stages of a World Cup finals for the first time in their history, but who they play will be determined by their final group game against Switzerland.

Substitute Johan Manzambi scored twice as the Swiss beat Bosnia-Herzegovina 4-1 to edge towards a place in the World Cup round of 32.

But did you know he was once a goalkeeper for his youth team?

Now Manzambi is a creative midfielder who enjoys getting forward, and his goalscoring exploits against Bosnia-Herzegovina suggest he could be far more than just a "super-sub" at this World Cup.

He broke into the Freiburg first XI last season and helped the German club reach the Europa League final.

Manzambi started against Aston Villa in the final and although he could not help his side win - they were beaten 3-0 - he has been linked with moves to Napoli, Chelsea and Manchester United.

His performance on Thursday at the Los Angeles Stadium suggests there could be more competition for his services this summer.

It could have been even better had he been allowed to take his side's 97th-minute penalty, with captain Granit Xhaka stepping up to convert instead,

If Manzambi had taken it and scored, he would have become the third-youngest player to hit a World Cup treble, after a 17-year-old Pele for Brazil against France in the semi-finals in 1958 and 19-year-old German Edmund Conen against Belgium in 1934.

They might not have made much impact on the World Cup stage before yesterday, but that is not to say Canada have not had their fair share of colourful personalities on the world stage.

One such figure is Tino Lettieri, who was born in Italy but raised in Canada.

The goalkeeper was known for keeping a stuffed parrot in the back of his net and represented the country in their debut World Cup appearance in 1986.

Lettieri earned 24 caps for Canada and started two matches at the World Cup - against Hungary and Soviet Union.

  16. Who could Canada play next?published at 09:32 BST 19 June

    Canada

Canada moved level with Switzerland on four points at the top of Group B, but are in poll position on goal difference thanks to their 6-0 victory over Qatar.

The co-hosts face Switzerland in Vancouver on Wednesday, 24 June at 20:00 BST.

A win or draw for Canada would keep them top, meaning, as things stand, they will face Belgium in the round of 32.

If they lose and drop into second place, Jesse Marsch's side could instead face South Korea in the first round of the knockout phase.

  17. 2026 has more red cards than each of last two World Cupspublished at 09:26 BST 19 June

    Canada 6-0 Qatar

It took only 27 games across seven days for officials to allocate more red cards than they did during the entire 2018 and 2022 FIFA World Cups.

The record for red cards in a single World Cup stands at 28 in 2006, nine of those were straight red cards.

The red cards in the 2026 World Cup so far are:

    • Sphephelo Sithole (Mexico v South Africa)
    • Themba Zwane (Mexico v South Africa)
    • César Montes (Mexico v South Africa)
    • Tarik Muharemović (Switzerland v Bosnia-Herzegovina)
    • Homam Ahmed (Canada v Qatar)
    • Assim Madibo (Canada v Qatar)

The number of red cards shown at the last six World Cups:

    • 2026: 5 red cards (all 5 straight reds)
    • 2022: 4 red cards (1 straight red)
    • 2018: 4 red cards (2 straight reds)
    • 2014: 10 red cards (7 straight reds)
    • 2010: 17 red cards (9 straight reds)
