It was a tense affair between Norway and Senegal last night as Ismaila Sarr's double was not enough to give his side a draw and a valuable point.

Senegal's best World Cup finals was their first in 2002, when they reached the quarter finals in South Korea and Japan.

At the last World Cup in Qatar, Senegal made the round of 16 - and despite the disappointment of their opening defeats this teim, there is a still a chance that the Afcon 2025 finalists could qualify as one of the 12 best third-placed teams.

That late goal could make a big difference for Senegal's hopes of getting to the 32.

Second half was once again a great example of what we've seen at this tournament, drama right up until the last moment.

Erling Haaland scored twice as Norway booked their place in the last 32 of the World Cup with victory over Senegal in New Jersey.

After just two games in the competition, the Manchester City striker has now scored twice as many goals (four) as any other Norway player in World Cup history.

Full-back Marcus Pederson, on as an early substitute, capitalised on a poor clearance from Senegal captain Kalidou Koulibaly to put Norway 1-0 up late in the first half - before Haaland took over in the second.

He raced on to Martin Odegaard's incisive through ball to double the lead in the 48th minute - becoming Norway's all-time top scorer at World Cups in the process - before Ismaila Sarr pulled a goal back to give Senegal hope.

But Haaland restored his team's two-goal cushion five minutes later with a calmly taken side-foot volley which went in off the bar.

Haaland has now scored in 12 consecutive competitive matches for Norway, registering at least two goals in each of the past six.

Sarr struck again in injury time to set up a nervy finale and the Crystal Palace winger could have equalised in the final seconds but put his header over the bar.

However, Stale Solbakken's Norway had been much the better side, even in a somewhat scrappy first half, and held on for a second straight win that means they have qualified from Group I alongside France.

Senegal must beat Iraq in their last group game to have any chance of reaching the knockout stages.

I think the obvious ones have turned up. At the beginning of the tournament I said 'maybe Argentina can do it again, maybe they aren't ready'. But the way Messi turned up, he is playing like it's his last tournament and he will do whatever it takes.

Then you look at France. They are the most talented team overall. They are pockets in the team, between the middle and backline, [where] there are have couple of holes.

Holland - of course I am going to look at them - but I feel they haven't had the biggest test yet. In the last game they played well and turned up.

If you look at a surprise package, I think the Moroccans are doing well, and I am surprised that Portugal aren't doing well. As a team, they have a lot of talent too.

Iraqis gathered in Baghdad last night to watch their nation beaten 3-0 by France.

At their first World Cup finals since 1986, Iraq have lost their opening two games.

They still have a chance of qualifying for the round of 32 if they beat Senegal on Friday when the sides will battle it out for third place.

If either win, they'll then rely on four third-placed teams having a worse group stage record in order to advance.

"We've been through an awful lot tonight," screamed the stadium announcer during a weather delay lasting more than two hours in the match between France and Iraq.

It was a challenging night for players, coaches - and all 68,344 fans inside Philadelphia Stadium.

A game that started at 17:00 local time finally ended at 20:47 because of safety concerns amid adverse weather conditions.

Storm clouds were already building when Canadian referee Drew Fischer blew for half-time at 17:49 with France leading 1-0.

Then came the heavy rain and a threat of thunderstorms in the area.

When it was finally deemed safe enough to resume, it was 20:00.

"It was a very long evening," said Mbappe.

"We spent a lot of time waiting. It's emotionally and mentally draining because we had to stay fully focused and engaged in the dressing room.

"Staying in the dressing room for an hour and a half - almost two hours - while maintaining focus is very difficult. It demands a lot. The players made a huge effort, as did the staff."

So what did they actually do in the delay?

"We played cards," joked France boss Didier Deschamps.

"No, well, we were waiting. We had slots that kept being pushed forward again.

"I was actually having a good time with my players and having fun.

"It's a question of safety. You cannot fight against the rain and lightning.

"It doesn't annoy me. These are very special circumstances and I do hope they don't happen again. It was important to take no risks."

Les Bleus defender Jules Kounde added: "We did some cycling to stay active. Then we stopped and talked while waiting to go back out and warm up."

Kylian Mbappe scored twice to move joint-second in the all-time World Cup goalscoring list as France cruised past Iraq in a weather-delayed game in Philadelphia.

Mbappe netted early in both halves to take his World Cup goals tally to 16 in 16 games, two shy of Lionel Messi who broke Miroslav Klose's record hours earlier.

France v Iraq became the first match at this World Cup to be interrupted by severe weather, with the second half beginning more than two hours after the first period ended because of lightning strikes in the area.

Heavy rainfall earlier in the day had delayed supporters' entry to Philadelphia Stadium, although the match kicked off on time.

France began strongly and their early dominance was rewarded in the 14th minute when Mbappe arrowed a left-footed strike into the far corner from the edge of the penalty area.

But the 2018 champions struggled to create any clear chances after the first-half hydration break, with Iraq able to enjoy longer spells of possession despite losing striker and captain Aymen Hussein to injury.

France emerged from the extended break with renewed conviction but were gifted a second goal - Iraq keeper Ahmed Basil failed to control a short goal-kick taken by defender Zaid Tahseen and Ousmane Dembele teed up Mbappe for a simple finish.

Les Bleus had further chances to extend their lead - Adrien Rabiot missed a clear header and Michael Olise hit the crossbar with an audacious dink - before Dembele scored their third with a strike into the bottom corner.

The goal - set up by a brilliant outside-of-the-foot pass from Olise - was Dembele's first for France at a major tournament in his 20th appearance.

Iraq created two decent chances in the final 20 minutes, but defender Rebin Sulaka volleyed over from Zidane Iqbal's corner before Ali Al Hamadi couldn't get on the end of a teasing Marko Farji cross.

Mbappe then raced clear late on and looked set to complete his hat-trick, but he lashed a left-footed effort high and wide.

France, who are bidding to reach a third successive World Cup final, are top of Group I with six points while Iraq are bottom with zero.

Algeria fought back to eliminate debutants Jordan from the World Cup and keep their own knockout hopes alive in San Francisco.

Jordan were organised in defence against an Algeria side who dominated possession - and the underdogs took a first-half lead when Nizar Al Rashdan curled home.

But Algeria piled on the pressure after the break and Nadhir Benbouali headed home an equaliser from Riyad Mahrez's 69th-minute corner.

Amine Gouiri then netted an 82nd-minute winner for Algeria to deny Jordan their first World Cup point.

Al Rashdan flashed a header wide of the near post inside 60 seconds but Algeria then took charge and Gouiri dragged a low shot wide while Fares Chaibi had a low shot blocked from Ibrahim Maza's cut-back.

Mahrez, making his first World Cup start since 2014, nearly broke the deadlock after being released by a long ball over the top, but he was denied by Yazeed Abulaila.

And it was Jordan who took a 36th-minute lead through Al Rashdan's tidy finish with the outside of his right foot, after Algeria's Ramiz Zerrouki had given the ball away cheaply.

After the break Abulaila parried a fierce 25-yard shot from Maza and saved a header from Benbouali, while Jordan's Noor Al Rawabdeh curled inches wide from the edge of the box at the other end.

But Algeria finally equalised when Benbouali glanced a downward header into the corner - and then Gouiri clinched the win when he hooked home a bouncing ball after another inswinging corner broke to him.

Lionel Messi became the World Cup's all-time record goalscorer as his double against Austria sent holders Argentina into the last 32.

The forward, who turns 39 on Wednesday, got his 17th and 18th goals at tournaments to move two clear of Germany striker Miroslav Klose, whose tally came between 2002 and 2014.

Messi's milestone moment came in the 38th minute of the Group J encounter in Dallas, sweeping home a first-time finish from just inside the penalty area after Thiago Almada had cleverly let Facundo Medina's pull-back go through his legs to tee up his team-mate.

The talismanic frontman's second came in second-half stoppage time as he fired home from a tight angle past two Austrian defenders after Julian Alvarez had been denied by keeper Alexander Schlager.

However, Messi could have broken the record earlier in the match.

After only eight minutes, Argentina were awarded a penalty following Stefan Posch's foul on Lautaro Martinez, with Austria defender Xaver Schlager also making a challenge, but Messi fired the spot-kick wide.

That disappointment soon turned to celebration, though, in another display of his class on a historic night.

He is now the top scorer in the 2026 competition, with five goals in two matches following a hat-trick in the 3-0 win over Algeria in their opening group game.

Before Messi's second, Austria - managed by former Manchester United boss Ralf Rangnick - had a chance to make it 1-1.

But Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez pushed away a powerful free-kick from Marcel Sabitzer, who was making his 100th international appearance.

Argentina, with six points, now join Mexico, the United States and Germany in having qualified for the last 32, and they will be confirmed as Group J winners if Jordan do not beat Algeria in the later game (Tuesday, 04:00 BST).

Having beaten Jordan in their opener, Austria still remain in contention on three points.
