Nice little warm up for the start of the EFL league season wasn't it?!

  5. 'A little bit of rust but Saints got through it'published at 19:28 BST 8 August

    FT: Colchester 0-2 Southampton

    Jo Tessem
Ex-Southampton midfielder on BBC Radio Solent

    Perfect in the end.

Not a good first half, a little bit of rust, got through it, upped the tempo and we showed that there was a lot more quality.

I think this gave, compared to the pre-season games, Tonda Eckert the answer he wanted for a few players because you could see the difference in quality.

I would be pretty pleased with this 2-0 win and two good goals.

  6. 'A really professional performance'published at 19:28 BST 8 August

    FT: Rotherham 1-4 West Brom

    Lee Camp
Former West Bromwich Albion and Rotherham goalkeeper on BBC Radio WM

A really professional performance, we spoke about it before the game, with them doing the basics really well over the 90 minutes.

There were about three minutes where they had taken their foot off the gas a little bit, around that 20 minute mark and they made a couple of sloppy passes.

As the game went on you could see some of the lads probably not quite up to match speed, the game was over and it all slowed down a bit.

But credit to the lads that came on for West Brom, they kept it going till the end.

Overall, from a fan and coaching staff point of view, I think you would be really pleased, because these games can be tricky. It is easy to make them harder work then they should be.

  7. FULL-TIMEpublished at 19:25 BST 8 August

    Cheltenham 1-3 Charlton

Full-time and Charlton got the job done in the first half of this one.

Matty Godden got them off to a strong start midway through the first half when he bent in a unerring finish off the post to give them the lead before they made it two in two minutes when Sonny Carey found the corner.

Tyreece Campbell scored the pick of the goals, finding the postage stamp with an absolute pearler and he almost made it four before half-time when he rattled the crossbar with his left foot from a tight angle.

George Miller pulled a goal back for Cheltenham, who improved vastly after the break, heading home from a corner but it's Charlton who are safely through to round two.

    Colchester 0-2 Southampton

Southampton's squad depth makes the difference in a tight tie with Colchester.

The U's were tough to crack but Tonda Eckert's substitutions proved fruitful after Cyle Larin and Romeo Acachukwu came off the bench to break the deadlock.

Saints move on from a drama-filled end to their season in May and Colchester lay a good marker down for what will be a good League Two season if they manage to keep up the level they displayed today week after week.

Only one winner but optimism to take from both sides.

  9. Postpublished at 19:22 BST 8 August

    Colchester 0-2 Southampton

Cameron Archer has a free run towards goal with the ball and drives forward at pace but Colchester defender Kane Vincent-Young does excellent work to get ahead and provide the block.

  10. FULL-TIMEpublished at 19:22 BST 8 August

    Rotherham 1-4 West Brom

Felix Myhre celebrates scoringImage source, Getty Images

Full-time at the New York Stadium and West Brom are safely in the hat for round two.

A really professional performance from the Albion who were home and hosed before the hour mark.

Jimmy-Jay Morgan scored twice on his debut, Harry Whitwell scored from a Morgan rebound, and Felix Myhre netted on his first appearance for the club, coming on at half-time, in a comfortable night's work for his new side.

Fabio Tavares claimed a consolation goal for the Millers but they were outplayed by the side from two divisions above them.

  11. GREAT SAVE!published at 19:21 BST 8 August

    Cheltenham 1-3 Charlton

What a fantastic save at the end of this match by substitute Cheltenham keeper Wyll Stanway!

He is at full stretch to meet Sonny Carey's left-footed daisycutter which was heading to the bottom far corner.

Brilliant stuff from Cheltenham's number two.

  12. goal

GOAL: Colchester 0-2 Southamptonpublished at 19:19 BST 8 August

    Romeo Acachukwu (90 + 2 mins)

A first senior goal on debut to put the game to bed. Not too shabby, is it?

Saints make an excellent move towards the box to set Romeo Acachuckwu up. He cuts inside and rolls in a low shot to ensure a Saints victory.

Another big goal from another Southampton substitute.

  13. Postpublished at 19:18 BST 8 August

    Colchester 0-1 Southampton

Five minutes added and the Colchester fans believe.

So does boss Danny Cowley. He's urging on the crowd support. They aren't done yet.

  14. Postpublished at 19:16 BST 8 August

    Colchester 0-1 Southampton

Colchester are forward again but can't keep hold of possession.

The U's are getting up the pitch now though. Might be a tense end to this contest at this rate.

  15. goal

GOAL: Rotherham 1-4 West Brompublished at 19:15 BST 8 August

    Fabio Tavares (87 mins)

A consolation goal and a moment which Rotherham fans can hold on to ahead of the new season.

It's a really well taken goal as well as Fabio Tavares receives the ball with his back to goal, turns on a sixpence, and toe-pokes the ball high into the near post past Max O'Leary who loses his clean sheet.

A moment of individual quality from the Portuguese forward.

  16. Postpublished at 19:15 BST 8 August

    Colchester 0-1 Southampton

Finn Azaz cuts back for goal scorer Cyle Larin but Colchester's Jack Payne intercepts to get the ball out the box.

Saints haven't put this to bed against the League Two side just yet.

  17. 'A tough call'published at 19:14 BST 8 August

    Rotherham 0-4 West Brom

    Lee Camp
Former West Bromwich Albion and Rotherham goalkeeper on BBC Radio WM

There are few difficult jobs in the world, and one of them would be picking a Rotherham man of the match.

    It is a tough call...

  18. SUBSTITUTIONpublished at 19:13 BST 8 August

    Colchester 0-1 Southampton

Southampton's Kuryu Matsuki has picked up an injury and can't continue.

    Romeo Akachukwu replaces him.

  19. 'Case of when and how U's go forward'published at 19:13 BST 8 August

    Colchester 0-1 Southampton

    David Gregory
    Ex-Colchester midfielder on BBC Essex

Southampton can just keep possession and Colchester United are trying to keep that same shape, but there's going to have to be a case of when and how you snap out of that and get forward.

  20. Postpublished at 19:13 BST 8 August

    Colchester 0-1 Southampton

Hands on head for an agonised Harry Anderson.

The cross into the box is a good one and the Colchester winger is up high to provide the header but nods it off target.

U's boss Danny Cowley is applauding the attempt though. A good effort from the hosts.
