  1. Villa battle back against West Ham to earn ninth consecutive winpublished at 11:06 GMT 15 December 2025

    West Ham 2-3 Aston Villa

Morgan Rogers scored two second-half goals as Aston Villa twice came from behind to beat West Ham and extend their winning run in all competitions to nine matches.

The England midfielder hammered an unstoppable shot into the top corner with 11 minutes left to put the visitors ahead for the first time in a topsy-turvy encounter.

West Ham were gifted an opener after just 29 seconds when Mateus Fernandes dispossessed Ezri Konsa on the edge of the penalty area before beating Marco Bizot with a powerful drive into the top corner from a tight angle.

Konstantinos Mavropanos inadvertently headed John McGinn's inswinging cross into his own net, while under pressure from Ollie Watkins, to draw Villa level in the ninth minute.

But Nuno Espirito Santo's side restored their advantage when Jarrod Bowen diverted Freddie Potts' volley past Bizot to give the Hammers a 2-1 half-time lead.

Unai Emery's team managed only one shot before the interval, but they restored parity for the second time when Rogers found the bottom corner after West Ham had failed to clear Youri Tielemans' low cross.

  4. An opportunity wasted for Frank?published at 10:57 GMT 15 December 2025

Things started very differently for Thomas Frank at Tottenham.

The Danish boss won six of his first 11 games in charge after deciding to leave Brentford in the summer.

They remain just six points off the top four despite dropping down to 11th in the Premier League table.

"I think Frank is a really good manager and we have to remember that all managers need time," said ex-England winger and BBC Match of the Day pundit Theo Walcott.

"Spurs are not in a terrible position either.

"I think the disappointing thing from their fans' point of view is that this is an opportunity to do even better because of how close the middle of the table is - and how no-one is really standing out massively in that middle pack."

  5. Is style over substance the big concern for Spurs fans?published at 10:55 GMT 15 December 2025

    Nottm Forest 3-0 Tottenham

One of the biggest concerns expressed by Tottenham supporters has been the defensive style of play under Thomas Frank, who has been accused of micro-management at times.

Frank made a triple substitution on 59 minutes at Nottingham Forest on Sunday, when trailing 2-0, bringing on Ben Davies, Joao Palhinha and Lucas Bergvall for Djed Spence, Archie Gray and Rodrigo Bentancur - with Spence clearly unhappy with the decision.

Former Arsenal forward Theo Walcott felt the changes would only add to fans' frustrations.

"I was thinking 'you are losing the game, why bring on defensive players?' That is the worry," he said. "The attacking side of Tottenham's play, and that is why the fans are frustrated too. Seeing that happen today is not going to help."

I'm not sure about the Vicario scrutiny. For the first goal Archie Gray ran to the edge of the box demanding the ball, and then ultimately lost it. The second goal was a peach into the top corner, and the third he had no chance with. Criticism seems harsh.

    Forest 3-0 Spurs

    Nigel Reo-Coker
Former Premier League midfielder on BBC Radio 5 Live's Football Daily podcast

Goalkeeper is one of the toughest positions to play because if you make a mistake you are the last line of defence. That means Gigi Vicario can be massively magnified and he just isn't helping himself.

The first goal he conceded was just embarrassing. He was trying to play out from the back and it went wrong because they were inviting too much pressure onto themselves.

It feels like Vicario is in a tough spot and so is Thomas Frank.

But they have to give Frank time because he is a very capable manager. It isn't his team, he is working with the players he has got there, but they need to give him the chance to recruit who he wants.

I think then there will be progression because they are not far off it now. They are just inconsistent.

Thomas Frank was frustrated by 'bad performance'

Tottenham manager Thomas Frank, who was appointed in the summer after leaving Brentford, said that he needed more time to turn things around.

Spurs won the Europa League last season under previous boss Ange Postecoglou but suffered a dreadful league campaign, finishing 17th - one place above the relegation zone.

"It's pretty evident if no-one gets the time, no-one can turn it around. This is not a quick fix," said the Danish manager.

He added: "I do everything to control my emotions, which is a hurricane inside me, because, of course, it's deeply frustrating that we are not doing better after three good performances.

"It is extremely important to be calm and measured and of course, have very, very direct and clear messages at the right time so they're not in doubt of what I think, because I'm very honest about where we are as well.

"Today was a very bad performance. No two ways about that, but also know that to change this, this will take some time."

    Nottm Forest 3-0 Tottenham

    Nick Mashiter
    BBC Sport football news reporter

One step forward, two steps back for Tottenham.

Yet again, as Spurs looked to progress under Thomas Frank, they came crashing down in arguably their worst performance of the season.

Defeats to Arsenal, Bournemouth and Fulham have been poor - chastening at times, especially to the Gunners - but the surrender at the City Ground could be labelled as a further low.

They were second best throughout and did little to suggest they are able to move forward in their present state.

Frank will need to defend his goalkeeper again but the whole team deserves criticism as they failed to handle an energised Forest.

  11. Forest & Vicario heap pressure on Frankpublished at 10:35 GMT 15 December 2025

    Nottm Forest 3-0 Tottenham

Guglielmo Vicario suffered a nightmare before Christmas as woeful Tottenham slumped at Nottingham Forest on Sunday.

The Spurs goalkeeper made high-profile mistakes to hand Callum Hudson-Odoi a brace before Ibrahim Sangare's stunner sealed victory.

Regardless of Vicario's gaffes, Forest deserved the win which moved them five points clear of the Premier League's relegation zone.

Limp Spurs were second best and failed to build on successive wins against Brentford and Slavia Prague and remain in 11th.

A sixth defeat in 16 Premier League games heaped further pressure on Tottenham boss Thomas Frank.

Jermain Defoe's volley. Kieran Richardson's thunderbolt free-kick. Fabio Borini's howitzer.

You can now add Woltemade's header to the list of memorable derby goals Sunderland have profited from at the Stadium of Light.

Never has a contribution from a Newcastle player been cheered so wildly by Sunderland supporters.

The hosts may have only had a single shot on target on Sunday, but don't let that fool you - they fully deserved this win.

When these sides last met - in the FA Cup, a couple of seasons ago - they were separated by a division. It was an afternoon when the gulf in class was evident. Not anymore.

Sunderland have now beaten, among others, Newcastle and Chelsea and drawn against Arsenal, Aston Villa and Liverpool since coming up through the play-offs. They have not lost a single game at home.

This side's motto, 'til the end', has been associated with a series of astonishing late goals, but it was telling those powers of recovery were not required against Newcastle.

  14. 'We are calling Le Bris a football genius'published at 10:25 GMT 15 December 2025

    Sunderland 1-0 Newcastle

    BBC 5 Live Breakfast

Sunderland fan Paul Dobson on manager Regis Le Bris: It seems Le Bris has an answer to almost every situation he gets presented to the club in terms of who we're playing, how we're playing, what the individual opposition players are like. There's really only Manchester City who have turned us over good and proper this season, which is not bad. They are the only team at the top that have beaten us.

We won at Chelsea, we've drawn against Arsenal [and Liverpool] and we seem to be able to answer a lot of the questions that the opposition pose. You think 'where has Le Bris come from?'. He didn't have the most successful career, management-wise, in France but he is obviously a very astute manager.

We didn't know anything about him. Google went into overdrive when we got the fella on board. After the changes we've had in the last eight and a half years, something like 15 different people involved with managing the club or being head coach since we got relegated, so we weren't despondent or questioning in a negative manner when he came.

Last season it went really well before going a bit flat, then jumped up the last three games and we achieved our goal by getting into the play-offs. When it became apparent that we weren't going to get into the top two he just managed the squad through the rest of the season so we were fit and firing for the three play-off games. We are calling him a football genius now. He is tactically a very astute manager.

Sunderland manager Regis le Bris speaking to Sky Sports after the 1-0 victory over Newcastle: "Proud and happy. It was a derby and we were expected [to win] by our fans. This win is well deserved, we were mature and the lads were incredible.

"During the first half tactically it was really good, just small details about the shape, then it was a question of being more clinical in the final third. We had good control and some times were more patient.

"It was a good level of maturity, so happy for the lads and it is good for our fans.

"It's good for the region, the club, the fans. We knew before it was a special game but we have to reset quickly as we have another tough challenge in Brighton in one week so let's go again."

  16. 'Yesterday we got everything right'published at 10:16 GMT 15 December 2025

    Sunderland 1-0 Newcastle

    BBC 5 Live Breakfast

Sunderland fan Paul Dobson on beating Newcastle: There wasn't a lot of free-flowing football but at the end of the day the three points are the most important things for us. Our target is still to stay in this league - the more points we get on the board, the sooner the better. And if you get them off them up the road it's an even happier occasion.

On Nick Woltemade’s own goal: We had a smile about it. They have paid an awful lot of money for the lad and I haven't seen the replays but it looks like he meant exactly what he did. It would have been a tremendous header by our player at the other end of the field if it had gone in at that end, but it doesn't matter, the ball went in the net

On being the better side in the derby: I have spoken to Newcastle fans when I got back to where I live and every one of them said it looked like we wanted it more. We had more urgency about us and that's the way it came across. Obviously, I am very biased - we just wanted to come out of the game with the result, which is what we got.

Unlike when we played them in the cup a couple of years ago, when the club got everything wrong off the field, yesterday we got everything right. Newcastle were referred to on the scoreboard as 'the visitors' all through the game. We didn't make them feel welcome, as we did last time, and we just about deserved to win it, which is the main thing.

    Sunderland 1-0 Newcastle

    Ciaran Kelly
BBC Sport football news reporter at Stadium of Light

Nick Woltemade put through his own net as Sunderland enjoyed a derby win to remember against arch-rivals Newcastle United.

These North East neighbours renewed hostilities for the first time in nearly a decade in the Premier League on Sunday, and it was Woltemade who made a decisive contribution - but not in the way the German forward would have imagined.

The second half had not long got under way when Sunderland defender Nordi Mukiele whipped a teasing cross into the box and Woltemade attempted to head the ball behind.

But the club's record signing ended up directing the ball in off the crossbar and into the net to send the Stadium of Light into raptures.

It felt like the roof was about to come off the stadium on an emotional afternoon for the hosts - just a day after club legend Gary Rowell died at the age of 68 following a long battle with leukaemia.
