The official England Supporters' Travel Club (ESTC) has sold its allocation of 4,022 tickets for tonight's game but the number of fans who travel independently and the ex-pats is really an unknown.

The United Kingdom Football Policing Unit (UKFPU) told BBC Sport that between 12,000 and 15,000 England fans are expected at each group stage game.

The UKFPU added that 89,000 World Cup tickets have been purchased by fans from England.

England's midfield duo of Declan Rice and Elliott Anderson have been locked in deep conversation during the warm-up.

They will have a vital job today, protecting England's back four while also providing creativity going forward.

And, of course, they will be close proximity to Croatia genius, 40-year-old Luka Modric. If they can stop this wonderful player exerting his influence, England's chances of opening their World Cup campaign with a victory will increase significantly.

Thumping music. Fans on the biggest big screen I have ever seen. The Dallas Stadium is a sea of colour from England's white to Croatia's famous red and white shirts.

The atmosphere is building and this has all the feel of a big World Cup occasion.

Thomas Tuchel wants to put, as he says, a second star on England's shirt with another World Cup win. The quest starts here.

England manager Thomas Tuchel, speaking to ITV about the feeling arriving to the Dallas Stadium for his World Cup debut: "Amazing, it's what we worked for. That was the goal, to be ready on that very day. We don't want to be anywhere else, I don't want to be anywhere else in the world but here. Let;s go"

On the conditions: "I didn't see the pitch, but deal conditions to play an intensive match and that's our aim."

On the decision to start Jude Bellingham over Morgan Rogers: "Very close. In the end we stuck with the team that started so well against Costa Rica. Both of them deserved to start. We will have these kind of decision. Bukayo Saka had an incredible training session yesterday and deserved to start but we will not start and finish this match with 11 players. We need a strong bench and we have players who can influence and change matches from the bench."

On if Bellingham's previous tournament experience influenced his decision: "He looked sharp, he looked happy to be on the pitch. To be proven in tournaments didn't play a role. Morgan is free from any experience and fresh and ready to go. It was a very 50-50 call and the decision goes to Jude to stay with the same line-up."

On Croatia: "I expected Mateo Kovacic to start. We have one slight tweak. You cannot read it from the faces and the names. It can be a back five but they can switch to a back four. We need to adapt our press and our attacking but we are prepared for that. We are at the starting line and we let the players go and take the next step."

It's not always the way that the star players deliver on the World Cup stage. But last night it really felt like the tournament came to life with three of the world's best lighting things up in their respective opening group games. No pressure Harry Kane.

Only Kylian Mbappe (12) has scored more goals than Harry Kane (8) across the last two Fifa World Cups.

Kane won the Golden Boot at the 2018 World Cup, when England reached the semis, while Mbappe won it in 2022 when his France side finished runners up to Argentina.

The French forward opened his 2026 account last night with two goals against Senegal.

Those of you who have been watching the first few days of this World Cup will have noticed that some players have had special patches on the sleeves of their shirts highlighting significant landmarks they've hit in the competition.

The likes of Erling Haaland and Lamine Yamal are among many to have worn a 'debut' patch, marking their first bows on the world stage, while Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo have sported 'legacy' badges marking their sixth World Cup tournament.

Tonight England skipper Harry Kane will have a golden patch on the right sleeve of his shirt to mark his 2018 World Cup Golden Boot.

All this talk of team selection but very little doubt in anyone's mind that Harry Kane would start tonight.

This will be his 30th England appearance at a major tournament - more than any other Three Lions player.

Thomas Tuchel's decision to call up Trevor Chalobah after Tino Livramento's injury makes sense if you follow the pattern of his squad selections so far.

Tuchel has a system that he is unlikely to change mid-tournament - and has opted for tall, positionally versatile players.

In addition to the 11 players who started the last game against Costa Rica, only Marc Guehi, Marcus Rashford, and Morgan Rogers are also likely to contest starting positions. These 14 will carry the load of England's minutes.

The rest of the squad, in Tuchel's words, are "specialists" who can provide tactical solutions depending on the state of the game - think Ivan Toney or Dan Burn, or players who cultivate a strong team environment like Jordan Henderson.

Trevor Chalobah ticks many of these boxes. A tall, versatile defender capable of playing as a centre-back or full-back commended for his worth ethic and personality within a squad environment.

All this chat about team news we haven't even talked about the biggest news on the eve of England's Group L opener.

Newcastle United full-back Tino Livramento has been ruled out with a calf injury and replaced by Chelsea defender Trevoh Chalobah.

Livramento, 23, sustained the injury during a training session on Sunday.

A real blow for the talented young England full-back.

But I'm sure many of you will have thoughts about his replacement with full-backs Trent Alexander-Arnold and Lewis Hall still sat at home.

I’ve attended fan zones in Los Angeles, Seattle and now Vancouver here at the World Cup so far and they all do a really good job of trying to be located in areas that showcase the best of their city.

In LA one fan zone was in the LA Memorial Coliseum - which hosted two Olympics - in Seattle it was on a barge at the harbour and here in Vancouver one is held on the city’s beautiful waterfront, with seaplanes taking off and landing in the background.

There’s a multi-national feel to the fans who are gathered here as well, and a group of different supporters including an England fan are here and settled in for the afternoon’s World Cup action.

Speaking of Gareth Southgate, the former England boss says he turned down the chance to be a pundit at this World Cup as he didn't think it would be be "helpful" to the side's chances.

Southgate led England for 104 games and in that time they reached the World Cup semi and quarter-finals as well as two Euro finals.

But silverware continues to elude the Three Lions and Southgate called time on his career after their lates near miss - Euro final defeat by Spain in 2024.

t's obviously a very different tournament for me this one, I've been at the last seven World Cups as a player, as a broadcaster, a scout and then as the manager," Southgate said in a post on Instagram, external.

"So this time I took a conscious decision not to do the TV. I didn't think it would be helpful for me to be talking about the team and I don't want anything to be misconstrued or thrown at them at press conferences, so best for me to keep out of the way."

Just five players remain from that England squad that missed out on the 2018 final under Gareth Southgate.

Jordan Pickford, John Stones, Jordan Henderson, Marcus Rashford and Harry Kane.

Those missing? Well, that's a whole other can of worms isn't it.

Eight years ago at the World Cup in Russia it was semi-final heartbreak for England against Croatia.

The Three Lions gave the nation hope of reaching a first World Cup final since 1966 when Kieran Trippier's 20-yard free-kick after only five minutes found the net.

But Ivan Perisic's 68th-minute equaliser sent the match into extra time and Mario Mandzukic scored the winning goal in the 109th minute.

Croatia went on to lose to France in the final. Oh what could have been...
