Image source, Opta- Hull are looking to reach the Premier League for the first time since 2016-17 – they’ve won both of their Championship play-off finals, beating Bristol City in 2008 and Sheffield Wednesday in 2016.
- Middlesbrough are also looking to reach the Premier League for the first time since 2016-17. This is their third appearance in the second tier play-off final, beating Chelsea over two legs in 1987-88 and losing to Norwich City in 2014-15.
- Hull City have won just two of their past eight meetings with Middlesbrough in all competitions (D1 L5), though did win the most recent meeting between the sides in December (1-0).
- The team finishing fifth in the Championship (Middlesbrough in this case) have won three of their past four appearances in the play-off final, though most recently Coventry City lost on penalties to Luton in 2022-23.
- Hull are looking to become the first team to finish sixth and win promotion to the Premier League since Blackpool in 2009-10. The Tigers have won three of their four matches at Wembley, losing the other 3-2 to Arsenal in the 2014 FA Cup final.
- Middlesbrough have never won at Wembley in five attempts (D1 L4). This is only their second match at the ground this century, following a 2-0 loss to Norwich City in the 2014-15 Championship play-off final.
- Middlesbrough’s Kim Hellberg facing Hull’s Sergej Jakirovic is the first time ever the second-tier play-off final will be contested by two managers in their first season in English football.
