Erling Haaland scored a superb hat-trick to help Manchester City continue their formidable FA Cup run under Pep Guardiola by booking a record-extending eighth consecutive semi-final with a ruthless dismantling of insipid Liverpool.
Manager Guardiola had to watch from the stands as he served the second game of a touchline ban and he witnessed his team take apart toothless Liverpool in a result that will increase the pressure on boss Arne Slot.
City's previous game was at Wembley, when they triumphed over Premier League leaders Arsenal in the Carabao Cup final, and the hosts backed that up with another impressive victory to close on a domestic cup double.
City had done little to threaten Giorgi Mamardashvili's goal until taking the lead on 38 minutes when Haaland converted from the penalty spot, just as he did at Anfield in the league this season, following Virgil van Dijk's clumsy trip on Nico O'Reilly.
The Norway striker had been on a relatively barren run in front of goal before this game but he then added a second by guiding a header into the far corner from Antoine Semenyo's cross on the stroke of half-time.
Liverpool had played fluently earlier in the game at Etihad Stadium - with Florian Wirtz prominent - but their inability to convert the chances they created proved costly.
City failed to deal with a long ball over the top but Mohamed Salah, playing for the first time since announcing he will leave Anfield this summer, hesitated when through on goal and his effort was blocked wide.
He also later had a penalty saved by James Trafford while Hugo Ekitike's strike from inside the area flew wastefully over.
City were much more clinical, as Semenyo clipped in a delightful finish early in the second half to make it 3-0 before Haaland completed his treble to seal City's serene progression to the last four.
It's actually ridiculous how many times we've been to Wembley - Haaland
City have made the national stadium their second home under Guardiola and two huge banners reading 'Wembley again, ole ole' were unfurled at the Etihad after they secured their return visit.
With top-flight teams including Arsenal, Chelsea, Leeds United and West Ham United all still remaining in the competition, a tantalising tie awaits for City later this month.
Having defeated Liverpool home and away in the league this season, City's brilliant display sealed a hat-trick of wins over the Reds for the first time in almost a century as they became the first team to achieve that feat since West Ham 10 seasons ago.
Once City went ahead courtesy of Haaland's spot-kick, there was no looking back and they will take great satisfaction from inflicting a heavy defeat on an opponent that Guardiola has called the "biggest rival" of his career.
Some questions had been asked of the Norway striker after just one goal in his past seven games for club and country, but his return to form will no doubt give his manager and team-mates confidence for the run-in.
Haaland seems to enjoy playing at home against Liverpool as he scored for a fourth straight game against them to take his tally to 46 goals overall this season.
Slot's side had won only one of their previous four games coming into this FA Cup tie and, after a bright first half-hour, they were swept aside by City in a manner that will lead to more questions about the Dutchman's future.
Many of the 8,000-strong travelling support exited the stadium to head back along the M62 long before the final whistle and now Liverpool only have the Champions League as a possible trophy this season.
Salah is one of Liverpool and the Premier League's greatest players, but this was a day to forget for the Egypt forward.
He dwelled too long on a good opportunity after a clearance by Mamardashvili to allow Abdukodir Khusanov to get back and block his strike and was then thwarted by Trafford with a weak shot from an angle.
His dismal day was complete when the new England goalkeeper dived to his left to keep out a spot-kick that was well struck but at a good height for Trafford.
Van Dijk has been one of Liverpool's best players in a season of very few good performers for the reigning league champions, but the Netherlands centre-back has had a handful of poor games - and this was another.
He crudely chopped down O'Reilly for City's opener and was caught out when Semenyo darted in behind him for his goal.
This has been a thoroughly wretched campaign for the Reds and before they resume their battle to qualify for next season's Champions League, Slot's out-of-form side face a daunting trip to holders Paris St-Germain in the quarter-finals of Europe's elite competition on Wednesday.

This will be the seventh FA Cup tie between Manchester City and Liverpool; the Citizens progressed from the first two after replays in 1955-56 and 1972-73, but the Reds have since won each of the last four, most recently in the 2021-22 semi-final en route to winning what is their most recent FA Cup trophy.
Manchester City have already completed a Premier League double over Liverpool this season, and could win three successive meetings with the Reds in all competitions for the first time since March 1937 (4 in a row). Indeed, the last side to beat Liverpool three times in a single campaign were West Ham in 2015-16.
Manchester City have won each of their last 17 home matches in the FA Cup, while victory here would make this the outright longest home winning run by any side in the competition proper, surpassing Clapham Rovers’ 17 wins from December 1873 to February 1881.
Liverpool have progressed from 17 of their last 19 FA Cup quarter-final ties, although they lost 4-3 to Manchester United in their most recent in 2023-24. The Reds haven’t been eliminated from back-to-back FA Cup quarter-final appearances since 1967-68/1969-70 under Bill Shankly.
Manchester City have won each of their last 31 FA Cup matches outside of semi-finals and finals since losing to Wigan in the 2017-18 fifth round. They are looking to reach the semi-final for the eighth successive season – with their run of seven already a competition record.
Liverpool won 3-1 away at Wolves in the fifth round, but haven’t won two away games against Premier League opponents within a single FA Cup campaign since 2005-06, when they won at Portsmouth in the fourth round and Birmingham City in the quarter-final.
Manchester City’s Erling Haaland has scored in each of his last three home games against Liverpool in all competitions; the only Premier League players (since 1992-93) to score in 4+ consecutive home appearances against the Reds are Chris Sutton (4 from 1994 to 1996) and Sergio Agüero (5 from 2013 to 2017).
Mohamed Salah has scored in each of his last three FA Cup appearances, including in a quarter-final against Manchester United in 2023-24. The last player to score in four consecutive FA Cup appearances for Liverpool was Emile Heskey in 2000-01 – whose run included a goal against Manchester City in the fifth round.
