Villarreal have won two of their three home games against French opposition in major European competition (L1), beating Lille in the 2005-06 UEFA Champions League and Rennes in this season’s UEFA Europa League group stage (both 1-0).
Marseille failed to win any of their first six away games against Spanish opposition in European competition (D2 L4) but did win on their last such trip, beating Athletic Club 2-1 in the 2017-18 UEFA Europa League round of 16 at San Mamés.
Villarreal lost the first leg against Marseille 4-0, the first time they’d shipped four goals in a major European match since losing 4-0 to Roma in February 2017. No side in UEFA Europa League history has overturned a 4+ goal first leg deficit in a two-legged knockout match.
Marseille have scored 23 goals in nine UEFA Europa League matches this season, their most ever in a single major European season. The last French side to score more in Europe in a season were Paris Saint-Germain in 2019-20 (25 in the UEFA Champions League).
Pierre Emerick-Aubameyang is the all-time leading scorer in UEFA Europa League history (2009-10 onwards), scoring 33 goals in 57 appearances. Nine of those have come this season for Marseille – the only player to score more goals in a major European season for OM is Didier Drogba in 2003-04 (11).
