      Glentoran 0-0 Ballymena United

What a save from Daniel Gyollai!

A Ballymena corner causes a scramble in the box with Stephen O'Donnell's header making Gyollai produce a great reaction save. The ball then deflects off a Glentoran defender before being eventually cleared.

That was a nervy moment for the home side.

Fra McCaffrey gets us underway at Lakeview Park.

It's getting towards last chance saloon for Loughgall as they look to preserve their Premiership status with games quickly running out.

However, as bleak as things look for the Villagers, they can take heart from the fact that they are unbeaten in their last four games against tonight's opponents - including the last time they won a league game this season, a 3-0 victory over Glenavon at the end of November.

      Loughgall v Glenavon, 19:45 GMT

Two teams hopeful of returning to winning ways meet in a rearranged league game at Lakeview Park.

Loughgall bowed out of the Irish Cup at Ards on Saturday while Glenavon suffered a rare league defeat under manager Paddy McLaughlin when they went down 0-1 at home to Crusaders 10 days ago.

Andrew Smith, deputising for the still suspended Dean Smith, makes four changes to the home team as goalkeeper Berraat Turker, Robert Mahon, club captain Ben Murdock and Ryan Waide all drop to the bench.

There are recalls for Nathan Gartside in goal along with Lewis Francis, while Benji Magee and Kirk McLaughlin form a formidable pairing up front after both were cup-tied at the weekend.

The visitors' starting XI shows two changes to that which lost to the Crues as top scorer Davy McDaid is suspended after picking up five bookings and Sean Carlin is listed among the replacements.

In come Barney McKeown and Matthew Snoddy.

Loughgall: Gartside, Andrade, Norton (c), Gibson, Balde, Francis, Magee, Carroll, Towe, McCaffrey, McLaughlin.

Subs: Turker, Murdock, Waide, McMenemy, O'Brien, Mahon, McCloskey.

Glenavon: Ryan, Toure, O'Sullivan, Snoddy, Malone, Campbell, Quinn, Atherton, McKeown (c), Murphy, O'Connor.

Subs: Byrne, Lynch, Prendergast, Carlin, Heaney, McGovern, Wilson.

      Referee: Shane McGonigle.

Carrick Rangers v Larne, 19:45 GMT

Perfect conditions greet both sets of players here in Carrickfergus for the east Antrim derby.

Each side makes just the one change from their last outings in a show of faith from the respective managers.

Stephen Baxter is forced into his sole change from the team that exited the Irish Cup against Dungannon Swifts on Saturday, with Jack Hastings unable to play against his parent club, Larne, so in comes Benjamin Buchanan-Rolleston to the starting 11.

There is good news for Rangers in that Paul Heatley has recovered from an injury sustained 10-days ago and is names amongst the replacements.

Larne's game with Ballymena United was postponed on Saturday. Manager Gary Haveron must have been pleased with his team's 4-1 win away to Loughgall last Wednesday night and his single change sees Aaron Donnelly come back into the defence.

Carrick Rangers: McIntyre, Maciulaitis, McCullough, Clucas, Crowe, Forsythe, Gibson, Cherry, O'Brien, Buchanan-Rolleston, O'Malley.

Subs: Mather, Watson, Heatley, Cushley, Boyd, Forbes, O'Reilly.

Larne: Ferguson, Want, Randall, O'Neill, O'Connor, Graham, Nolan, Cosgrove (c), Gallagher, Donnelly, Ryan.

Subs: Graham, McKendry, McEneff, Bayode, Ajala, Wallace, Simpson.

Glentoran v Ballymena United, 19:45 GMT

Declan Devine responds to the disappointing exit in the Irish Cup at the hands of Bangor by making seven changes to the starting XI from Friday evening.

Fuad Sule, Nathaniel Ferris, Finley Thorndike, Shane McEleney, Frankie Hvid, Dylan Connolly and Aaron Wightman come into the side.

Christie Pattisson, Jonny Russell, James Douglas and Jordan Jenkins drop to the bench with Kodi Lyons-Foster, Marcus Kane and Joe Thomson not in the squad tonight.

It's been ten days since Ballymena United played after their game against Larne was postponed at the weekend due to a waterlogged pitch.

There are two switches to the side who defeated Portadown by 2-0 with Stephen O'Donnell and Patrick McEleney replacing James Hood and Alex Gawne.

Glentoran: Gyollai, Amos, Hvid, S McEleney , Amos, Wightman, Sule, Thorndike, Ferris, Palmer, Fisher.

Subs: Mills, Lindsay, Pattison, Russell, Jenkins, Douglas, Johnson.

Ballymena United: O'Neill, Barr, Loughran, O'Donnell, McCallion, Lafferty, P McEleney, Jarvis, Corbally, Edogun, McCurry.

Subs: Johnston, Moore, McMullan, Devine, Hawe, Hood, Idehen.

    15. Review requests could provide VAR alternative for NIFLpublished at 19:32 GMT 4 March 2025
      19:32 GMT 4 March 2025

Northern Ireland Football League (NIFL) competitions could be among those that would benefit from video support for match officials in the future, believes Irish Football Association (IFA) chief executive Patrick Nelson.

Video support is being trialled by Fifa and involves two review requests per match made by coaches.

Designed for countries where video assistant referees (VAR) would be cost prohibitive, the system was up for discussion at the annual general meeting of the International Football Association Board (IFAB) held on Saturday in Holywood, Northern Ireland.

Former referee Pierluigi Collina, now chairman of the Fifa referees committee, was also in attendance at the meeting where it was noted that, despite widespread implementation of VAR, not all countries can afford the required number of cameras and officials at games.

"I think it was pointed out by Pierluigi Collina that we now have VAR in 65 countries and more than 200 competitions, but of course that leaves many, many countries that haven't been able to invest in this," said Nelson.

"Fifa have trialled this and it has some really good potential for smaller countries and I would include Northern Ireland in that.

"It's different from VAR. It's only based on one, two, or three cameras and it doesn't require specialist VAR officials, it just requires a monitor operator to assist the referee."

Nelson said that "in reality (VAR) would be too expensive" to implement in Northern Ireland but noted that it is not possible to put a "timeframe" on when an alternative system could be implemented in the Irish Premiership.

Signing for one of the best clubs in the world is the stuff of dreams for a 16-year-old footballer

For Abbie Smith, that has now become a reality.

The teenage goalkeeper, from Lisburn in Northern Ireland, has signed for Women's Super League side Manchester City on a two-year scholarship deal.

Smith says it is a "once in a lifetime opportunity" as she makes the lead from Crusaders in the Women's Premiership to the English giants.

"I'm just excited to get started," said Smith.

"I went over for a trial in March last year and felt I had done pretty well. I was then invited back in April and I trained with the first team, with Khiara (Keating) and Katie Robinson at the time.

"I got to eat with them and go to the gym with them at the City Football Academy. It was an amazing opportunity and then I was offered the scholarship."
