Thomas Tuchel says he "was a bit surprised" by the statement released by Harry Maguire on Thursday evening because he had already had a private conversation with him and he made his feelings clear.

He added that he respects his personality and quality but was taken aback by the statement.

He has gone into detailed reasoning behind why he has made the picks he has without singling anyone out.

I've said it before but he doesn't half speak well...

Another call that could divide opinions as Djed Spence is selected ahead of Newcastle United's Lewis Hall.

It's not been a great season for either Phil Foden or Cole Palmer. And in that attacking area, we've got a pool of players who have outperformed them at club level.

Usually for England you get to keep your place on your name, but Thomas Tuchel wants to pick on form and chemistry, so I'm not surprised.

Would I have take Ivan Toney? With no disrespect, no, but it's a different situation.

Maybe his schedule hasn't been as hectic. If the manager thinks he needs to give Harry Kane a rest or we need a penalty specialist, there are loads of situations where he could come into the mix.

It's going to be a very hot tournament, so he wants to bring a pretty fresh Ivan Toney. Obviously, he's a penalty specialist. We hope we won't go through that in a tournament again but that's very possible.

Having a few extra numbers allows you to take specialists or players for specific occasions. The only thing I can think of with Toney is that he's very much a specialist when it comes to taking penalties.

With the Harry Maguire situation, it's one where Tuchel has decided to go with other options.

I think Maguire's form this year has put him in as good a position as he could have been in, but Tuchel's stuck to his guns and you've got to respect that.

No confirmation of this, but I’m hearing Thomas Tuchel is considering inviting some of the unlucky few to miss out on his final squad to join the travelling party for the pre-tournament camp in Florida. Bournemouth’s Alex Scott is an option if Tuchel decides to go down that route.

I had to comment on this yesterday. They showed Ivan Toney's goal record and I was like okay, and that’s the thing I didn’t know because I don’t have eyes on the Saudi Pro League.

I think for Tuchel, he has seen Toney's skillset and decided regardless of what anyone else thinks that this is going to work for me for this season. I think the style of play he has, maybe he’s a mix between a Danny Welbeck and Calvert-Lewin and for Ivan, he probably knows that he is not going to be starting as well in the majority of the games.

But there is a feeling that attackers have which is a privilege to them that when a game isn’t going well, the manager looks down the bench and he is always locking eyes with the attackers and Toney can be that person.

Striker Ivan Toney is a surprise inclusion in the World Cup squad having featured just once under Thomas Tuchel and not having been called up since June 2025.

He has scored 32 goals in 32 games for Saudi Pro League side Al-Ahli, this season.

In the aforementioned call-up last summer, the striker played less than four minutes in the 3-1 defeat by Senegal at the City Ground.

Here's what he said: "A lot of factors play into that nomination process. Like I said, I love the difficult decisions, and I love the tough decisions – they bring a certain edge. That is what you need to go all the way. It is hard to please. In the end, we have to pick the squad that we as a staff are convinced of and really believe in.

"You feel the love of your coach, and you feel the trust. In the end, it comes down to this – who do we really trust? The connection has to be there. Somehow, it is a bit of a tool to challenge myself. What would I think from the outside? Mostly it is about the energy, connection and trust between me and the players."

Thomas Tuchel says that team chemistry has played a big part in his thinking about his England squad for the World Cup.

"Everything I know about international football and everything I hear about international football is that it is about chemistry. It is so obvious in this moment that teams win titles." Tuchel said.

Indeed, you should perhaps spare a thought for Nottingham Forest midfielder Morgan Gibbs-White this morning.

The 26-year-old has had an outstanding season for Forest and is the top-scoring English player in the Premier League alongside Ollie Watkins and Dominic Calvert-Lewin, on 14 goals.

In total, he has racked up 18 goal contributions in the top flight, that is more than any other midfielder in the squad, including Jude Bellingham, who has produced nine in 27 La Liga outings.

No-one is even close to Gibbs-White for form since the turn of the year with 14 of his 18 goal contributions having come since the start of January.

So there we go. The England squad for the 2026 World Cup is announced. The biggest shock from that is Ivan Toney.

The striker has not played for England for a year and had limited minutes in a friendly defeat to Senegal.

There is no place for Phil Foden and Cole Palmer. The pair were always up against it with Morgan Rogers and Jude Bellingham favoured by Thomas Tuchel.

John Stones, despite his fitness issues also makes the group. Tuchel is a big fan of Stones and his leadership skills, ability on the ball and tournament experience mean that he's a must have for the England manager.

There we have it then. It's exactly as we thought it would be.

Which, judging by the thumbs so far today - isn't proving popular.
