I think Wales have had the two toughest sides they could've faced.

Bosnia won five of their eight qualifying games, and are clearly a competent side.

Italy aren't the side they once were. There's definitely been a dip.

  5. Potential World Cup play-off final matchespublished at 12:58 GMT 20 November 2025

With the draw for the semi-finals complete, we now know the possible pathways for each team, including who will host the play-off final, should they get there.

    Potential final matches:

    • Wales or Bosnia and Herzegovina v Italy or Northern Ireland
    • Ukraine or Sweden v Poland or Albania
    • Slovakia or Kosovo v Turkey or Romania
    • Republic of Ireland or Czechia v Denmark or North Macedonia
  6. Toughest semi-final draw possible for Northern Irelandpublished at 12:54 GMT 20 November 2025

    Jonathan Bradley
    BBC Sport NI senior journalist

Northern Ireland have played Italy 11 times previously, winning just once against the Azzurri and that came all the way back in 1958.

Those looking for a good omen will note, however, the famous result helped the side qualify for that summer's World Cup in Sweden.

    Could history repeat itself?

Well, going off Fifa rankings that's the hardest draw Northern Ireland could have faced.

Given that even if they win in Italy, they'll be on the road again in a potential final against either Wales or Bosnia, things couldn't be much tougher for Michael O'Neill's side.

If Wales beat Bosnia-Herzegovina, that's six out of six play-off ties - for World Cup and European Championship qualifying - in the new format they will have played at home.

Two potentially tough ties but Craig Bellamy and his players will be delighted to be at home for both matches.

  9. Republic of Ireland's dream very much alivepublished at 12:46 GMT 20 November 2025

    Matt Gault
    BBC Sport NI senior journalist

The Republic of Ireland have not played Czech Republic in a competitive game since the 2008 European Championship qualifiers.

The Czechs are three places above Hungary in the world rankings, so given last week's Irish triumph in Budapest, there's no reason for Heimir Hallgrimsson's side to fear a trip to Prague.

And, with the Irish at home in the play-off final if they get that far, their World Cup dreams remain very much alive.
