  9. 'Red card & penalty correct'published at 15:45 GMT 1 March

    Man Utd 2-1 Crystal Palace

    Darren Cann
Former Premier League assistant referee on BBC Sport

Referee Chris Kavanagh correctly penalised Lacroix for holding Cunha. He also had to decide if the holding offence continued into the penalty area, or whether Lacroix had ceased contact outside the box.

Kavanagh took his time and used all his experience to rightly ascertain that contact continued inside the penalty area and awarded a penalty kick.

The red card sanction was also the correct outcome. The law states ‘where a player commits an offence against an opponent within their own penalty area which denies an opponent an obvious goalscoring opportunity, and the referee awards a penalty kick, the offender must be sent off if the offence is for holding or pulling’.
