There was huge news on Saturday when Confederation of African Football president Patrice Motsepe announced that the tournament will be held every four years from 2028.

The spectacle has taken place every two years since 1968, with a one-year gap between the 2012 and 2013 editions, but will change to a four-year cycle after the 2027 Afcon in East Africa and a 2028 edition.

A new African Nations League which will take place annually from 2029.

"We have the most exciting new structure for African football," Motsepe said.

"I do what is in the interests of Africa. The global calendar has to be significantly more synchronised and harmonised."

Moroccan King Mohammed first discussed his plan to use football as a tool for social and economic development in 2008, before opening the Mohammed VI Football Academy in 2009 and the $65m (£48.5m) Mohammed VI Training Complex in 2019.

The facilities host youth and senior national teams - men and women - combining elite training with education, accommodation and sports science.

"This evolution of Moroccan football is not a random achievement," Moroccan football analyst Jalal Bounouar told BBC Sport Africa.

"It came through years of strategic planning and a long-term national project supported by the highest levels of Moroccan authorities."

Sofyan Amrabat called the stadiums involved "amazing" and the pitches "very good".

"The weather will be good - it's not very hot at the moment in Morocco," he added.

"With the fans behind us, they can push us a lot. We need this energy to go and press and show intensity."

Comoros reach the break level against dominant Morocco, who missed a penalty when Soufiane Rahimi's spot kick was stopped by Yannick Pandor after 11 minutes.

The host nation have had seven of the eight attempts between the teams - but only one on target, which is as many as their opponents have had.

Halfway to a surprise in the opener.

A nervy moment for Comoros after Ahmed Soilihi swipes at the air with an attempted clearance.

The ball rolls towards goalkeeper Yannick Pandor, but Brahim Diaz reckons he can intercept in front of an unguarded net, which is understandable given his speed.

The challenge is a poor one, leaving Pandor in pain and his opponent with a yellow card.

There was some real venom in that free-kick. It was about 50 yards out.

Rafiki Said tries to bustle beyond the halfway line, winning a foul.

That will take some of the pressure off Comoros, who have a free-kick just past the centre circle.

Captain Youssouf M'Changama uses it to shoot from a long, long way out. Yassine Bounou claims, but only at the second attempt.

Worth a go in tricky conditions.

Morocco are on a world record 18-match winning run - but only one of those wins was against a side ranked in the world's top 50.

That was Tunisia, who were 49th when the Atlas Lions beat them in June.

They usually do the job against lesser-ranked opponents but Comoros are certainly frustrating them so far this evening.

All going to plan for Stefano Cusin's side... if the crowd continue to get more frustrated then it could play into his side's hands.

One or two laser pens are out from the home fans too, with the referee and Comoros keeper Yannick Pandor targeted.

This stubborn defensive performance and the rain are quietening the crowd.

Faiz Selemani clumps a clearance out of the box. Comoros are closing in on at least parity at half-time.

Nayef Aguerd, who joined Marseille from West Ham in September, whacks a shot from distance well clear of the crossbar from the free-kick.

Yannis Kari, who is Yannick Pandor's cousin, is booked for a clumsy challenge.

The centre-back has put his relative in a tricky situation here, because Morocco have a free-kick within shooting range as a result of his transgression.

Once we've seen everyone play twice, you'll get a good idea of who the top eight teams will be.

I'd be surprised if an outsider wins it. It wouldn't surprise me if DR Congo got to the final.
