It's been a New Year's Day bore fest so far, here's hoping it gets better for us neutrals.

  4. 'Man City need more control in second half'published at 21:07 GMT 1 January

    Sunderland 0-0 Man City

    Micah Richards
Former Man City defender on Sky Sports

I think Phil Foden's come a little bit too deep, so Rodri could sort out that situation and get him further up the field.

It's more about the balance of the team and having more control because Sunderland were excellent in the first half.

The crowd for Sunderland is amazing. When one of the players made a tackle, the roar was humongous.

  5. KICK-OFFpublished at 21:06 GMT 1 January

    Sunderland 0-0 Man City

Off we go for the second half.

Rodri has not played for Manchester City since 2 November, when he played one minute against Bournemouth.

  6. SUBSTITUTIONpublished at 21:05 GMT 1 January

    HT: Sunderland 0-0 Man City

It looks like Rodri is coming on for Nico Gonzalez.

We saw him pull up injured in the first half so the Spanish Ballon d'Or winner is being called into action.

    Brentford 0-0 Tottenham

Tottenham keeper Guglielmo Vicario punches away a cross and gets just enough on it that it doesn't land to a Brentford player.

This Sunderland team can teach a few other teams that application and determination is a key ingredient to succeed in the Premier League. I see a Xhaka goal here.

I can understand the frustration with Spurs, but with three key attacking players out long-term, I just don’t think Frank has many options at the moment.

    HT: Sunderland 0-0 Man City

Manchester City's two attempts so far are their joint-fewest in the first half of a Premier League games this season (also two v Crystal Palace in December and Aston Villa in October).

  13. Postpublished at 20:56 GMT 1 January

    HT: Brentford 0-0 Tottenham

That really was not an entertaining first half. Brentford had a goal rightly ruled out for offside, while Spurs haven't had a shot on target.

That's that for the first half.

Manchester City have one disallowed but lots to be pleased with for Sunderland, who are right in this contest.

That's your right back getting into an area in open play to try and score. Sunderland have been brilliant.

  18. CLOSE!published at 20:49 GMT 1 January

    Sunderland 0-0 Man City

That's about as close as Sunderland have come to opening the scoring.

A lovely delivery into the box but Trai Hume's glancing header goes over the bar. He puts his head in his hands, big chance.

  19. HALF-TIMEpublished at 20:47 GMT 1 January

A very 'meh' first half comes to an end.
