Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola speaking to BBC MOTD: "Tough place to come. The amount of chances we missed in the six-yard box, not difficult ones, we could not convert. We didn't do what we talked about in the first half but in general it was a really good game.

"To break the lines, have the composure to break them. It was better second half, the guys did everything. They are a bit heads down but we have to be heads up because in three days we have a difficult game against Chelsea.

"We created enough chances, we played good second half. The commitment, the desire, the first half was different. We created enough - the two chances from Savinho in the second half, Jeremy [Doku], Josko [Gvardiol], Phil [Foden] and Erling [Haaland]. We had a lot but unfortunately we could not do it."

Drawtastic. A very equitable New Years Day all round. Arsenal the biggest winner, congrats to Sunderland for shutting out City and Leeds for frustrating Liverpool, on a frustrating day for the forwards.

Tottenham midfielder Joao Palhinha, speaking to Sky Sports: "I think it is a fair result.

"To be honest, not easy playing against a good team in an away game.

"Second clean sheet in a row in the Premier League - it is not easy - we need to have credit about that. Offensively we still need much more than we have been doing."

This is just the second day in Premier League history to have at least four games played but see as few as two goals scored.

The other was 29 April 1998 (also two goals in four games).

  6. 'We have such good energy'published at 22:15 GMT 1 January

    FT: Sunderland 0-0 Man City

    Sunderland

Sunderland captain Grant Xhaka, speaking to Sky Sports: "In the end, of course, you want to win games but we need to see the reality as well. We just came up to the Premier League after so many years and we had a couple of changes in the team. Nearly 15/16 new players and it's not always easy to get so quick together.

"It's just the energy, our dressing room is so positive. We have such good energy with the staff, with the players. In the end, the results speak for ourselves because we are putting a lot of effort day by day, week by week. I think we can be very happy for the moment after the first round."

Absolutely fantastic performance from Sunderland. They were tireless in their defending all over the pitch, from the midfield in Xhaka to the defence in Mukiele.

The game plan, of course, City were knocking down the door a lot, creating chances, but Sunderland got the rub of the green.

    Thoroughly deserved point for them.
