The Egyptian FA’s complaint to Fifa is unnecessary, lacks merit, and should not warrant further consideration. Fifa should dismiss this matter immediately, as it serves no constructive purpose, distracts from the integrity of the game, and risks creating an unwarranted controversy where no substantive issue exists.

  3. What are Egypt hoping to achieve?published at 13:17 BST 8 July

    Argentina 3-2 Egypt

While Egypt may feel they have grounds for complaint, the objectives of their complaint are less clear.

Beyond asking for the officials involved to be kicked out of the tournament, it's unclear what they hope to achieve through their complaint.

Any investigation into supposed anti-Egypt bias from the officials would be lengthy and is difficult to prove.

If only everyone actually analysed the foul before the goal. It was a foul. And Salah definitely did not deserve a penalty either. This was not an example of bad officiating.

  7. 'Blatant errors'published at 12:42 BST 8 July

    Argentina 3-2 Egypt

Egyptian FA president Abo Rida called for an investigation of the entire team of referees and video technology referees after what it said were "blatant errors and insisting on not reviewing some of the footage that we believe are in favour of the Egyptian national team".

It then "demanded the exclusion of the referee and the entire crew from the World Cup after investigating these mistakes" and alleged "the crime of discrimination against the Egyptian national team".

Lionel Messi set up the first Argentina goal and then fired home an equaliser in the 83rd minute.

In what could be his final World Cup, Argentina are aiming to defend their title, while Egypt have never reached the quarter-finals.

When interviewed after the game, Egypt boss Hossam Hassan said his side had been "treated unfairly" and "suffered injustice".

He added: "Perhaps they wanted to keep the world champion in the competition. Perhaps they wanted Messi to stay in the running."

Egypt forward Zico, added: "The referee was really unfair. The injustice was clear. There's been an unfairness right from the start of the match.

"It is clear that this tournament has been fixed."

  8. Egypt ask for officials to be kicked out of World Cuppublished at 12:28 BST 8 July

    Argentina 3-2 Egypt

The Egyptian Football Federation says it has called on Fifa to kick the officials in charge of their World Cup last-16 defeat by Argentina out of the tournament.

The federation says it has lodged a complaint with football's world governing body and wants an investigation into what it described as "double standards" of officiating in the game.

The video assistant referee (VAR) ruled out a second goal by Mostafa Zico for a foul after midfielder Marwan Attia was penalised for stepping on Lisandro Martinez's foot at the start of the move, with Egypt leading 1-0 in the second half.

They were also adamant Mohamed Salah was then fouled in Argentina's penalty area, seconds before the reigning champions broke for the winner that made the score 3-2.

"Hany Abou Rida president of the Egyptian Football Federation, filed a complaint with Fifa, demanding an investigation into the French referee Francois Letexier after the serious refereeing mistakes committed by the team of referees and double standards, which caused the Egypt team to lose the match and leave the World Cup," a statement from the Egyptian Football Federation said.

  10. African teams held back by late goalspublished at 11:54 BST 8 July

    Argentina 3-2 Egypt

At the 2018 World Cup in Russia, not one of Africa's five teams made it out of the group stage, recording just three wins out of a possible 15.

Fast forward to the 2026 World Cup and the performances of African teams will be held up as vindication of Gianni Infantino's expansion project. Of the 10 African teams, all but one made it through the group stage.

Cruelly, so many of their campaigns were undone by late goals:

    • In the Round of 32, South Africa fell 1-0 to Canada after Stephen Eustaquio struck the winner in the 90+2nd minute.
    • Côte d'Ivoire lost 2-1 to Norway when Erling Haaland tapped home in the 86th minute, while DR Congo suffered the same scoreline against England after Harry Kane's 86th-minute winner.
    • Senegal looked set for a famous victory after leading Belgium 2-0, only to concede in the 86th and 89th minutes before Youri Tielemans converted a penalty in the 125th minute- the latest goal in World Cup history- to complete an agonizing defeat.
    • Cape Verde also came heartbreakingly close to an all time upset, holding Argentina at 2-2 until the 111th minute before conceding the decisive goal from a corner.
    • Algeria exited with a 2-0 defeat to Switzerland, while Ghana fell 1-0 to Colombia after conceding in the first half.

It's been a tournament that showcased the growing strength of African football, but also one defined by the finest of margins.

  11. A third Golden Ball for Messi?published at 11:46 BST 8 July

    Argentina 3-2 Egypt

Lionel Messi could become the first player in history to be awarded a third World Cup Golden Ball.

Introduced in 1982, the Golden Ball is given to the best player at each World Cup finals. A shortlist is drawn up by Fifa's technical committee before members of the media vote for the ultimate winner, who is presented with a trophy at the World Cup final.

When Messi received his first in 2014, he didn't smile as Argentina had just lost the final to Germany.

In 2022, though, Messi received his Golden Ball with glee as he prepared to lift the World Cup trophy for the first time.

Do you think Messi is in with a good shout of being the player of the tournament for a record third time?

  13. Messi eyes career first World Cup Golden Bootpublished at 11:34 BST 8 July

    Argentina 3-2 Egypt

Lionel Messi's equaliser was his eighth goal of the tournament.

The 39-year-old nudged himself ahead in the race for the Golden Boot - which, as we approach the quarter final stage, looks tight.

Here are the standings so far:

    8 - Messi

7 - Erling Haaland and Kylian Mbappe

    6 - Harry Kane

4 - Ousmane Dembele, Ismaila Sarr, Mikel Oyarzabal, Jude Bellingham, Vinicius Junior, Julian Quinones

Messi has won most of the honours it is possible for a player to win - including, crucially, the World Cup he so craved in 2022 - but there remains a World Cup Golden Boot-shaped hole in his trophy cabinet.

Meanwhile, both Kane and Mbappe are aiming to become the first player to win the World Cup Golden Boot twice.

I understand why Egyptians are calling it a fix, but it's a bit much for English fans to be joining in when there was a clear foul in the build up. It's almost like you don't want to meet them later...

But it wasn't a perfect night for Messi.

Argentina were trailing 1-0 when Haissem Hassan brought down Nicolas Tagliafico in the box.

Their talisman stepped up to the spot to level the game - but his effort was saved by Egypt's Mostafa Shobeir.

After firing a penalty wide in Argentina's group stage win over Austria, Messi is now the only player to have failed to convert two or more penalties in a single World Cup tournament (excluding shootouts).

Whether or not you agreed with the officiating, you can't deny that Argentina showed serious mettle to turn the tie around.

It was the first time a team had won a World Cup knockout match inside regulation time after trailing by two goals with 15 minutes left to play.

What's more, a reigning World Cup champion has never come back to win from trailing by two or more goals. Until last night.

Let's take a look at Messi's contribution to Argentina's comeback...

  20. VAR is perceived to be consistent when it intervenes more oftenpublished at 10:55 BST 8 July

    Argentina 3-2 Egypt

    Dale Johnson
    Football issues correspondent

VAR is used in one in every three games in the World Cup, whereas it's just under one in every three in the Premier League.

Perception has changed slightly. In the group stage, people had the idea VAR would be staying out of things. When we got to the knockouts, people are starting to think it isn’t quite so smooth.

Like we see in the Premier League, when you try to have a higher bar on things, it’s far more difficult to get that subjective point. When you have 30 different VARs all trying to have the same subjective bar, managing to do that is nearly impossible.

That’s why it looks better in the Champions League, because you have an intervention every other game and because they get involved in so much, it looks consistent because there is not so much opinion going on.
