West Ham chance. Pablo manages to turn Sepp van den Berg and starts racing towards goal. The Brazilian, whose never scored in the Prem. is off balance when he shoots and kind of mishits it, allowing Caoimhin Kelleher to make a simple diving save.

William Osula somehow wriggles out of a challenge from Olivier Boscagli and gets the home fans on their feet as he surges towrads the box.

But across comes Carlos Baleba to tackle. There are some half-hearted penalty appeals, but it wasn't a foul.

Sunderland are temporarily down to 10 men as defender Nordi Mukiele departs the field to receive treatment after taking a knock to the hand.

This feels like a big game at St James' Park today - and not just for Brighton.

Among those watching on from the directors' box are Newcastle United chairman Yasir Al-Rumayyan and minority owner Jamie Reuben, who were in the north east this week for an annual summit to chart the club's future.

Head coach Eddie Howe has gone with several members of the old guard today after naming five of the club's six summer signings on the bench. He needs a big performance in front of the home crowd and the hierarchy.

Granit Xhaka clears Wolves' first venture inside the area after a slick move down the left involving Mateus Mane, Tolu Arokodare and Hugo Bueno.

It's all Brighton at the moment, Newcastle have hardly had a touch.

There are already some murmurs of discontent rippling around St. James' Park.

Oooof, Brentford almost take an instant lead through Dango Ouattara who absolutely wallops a shot narrowly wide of the far post from the edge of the box.

Big early chance for Brighton!

Already relegated Wolves host Sunderland, whose form is also floundering.

Even though it is less than two weeks since Wolves' fate was mathematically sealed, the writing had been on the wall for much longer.

Rob Edwards' side showed glimpses of raging against the dying of the light with a recent run of just one defeat in six league matches – but the past three matches have been a return to the miserable form that has left them bottom for most of the season.

Three straight defeats, eight goals conceded and none scored. Another loss will see Wolves set a new club record of 24 defeats in a 38-game campaign in the top flight.

Wolves have failed to score in a division-high 18 Premier League games this season – although the fact that Sunderland shipped five last time out may give them some hope.

They also have a good record at home to the Black Cats. They are unbeaten in their past seven home league games against Sunderland (W3, D4) – although this is the first time they have hosted them since a 0-0 draw in the Championship in 2017.

Eddie Howe had been here before.

It was just last year when the Newcastle United head coach delivered a presentation to the club's owners and executives at an annual summit at Matfen Hall in Northumberland.

Newcastle were on the cusp of ending a seven-decade wait for a major domestic trophy, by winning the League Cup, and on course to qualify for the Champions League at the time.

But this year's edition was a little different after Howe was asked "difficult" questions about his side's slide to 14th in the Premier League table.

This summit had been in the diary for several months and was viewed as an opportunity to discuss infrastructure projects and recruitment plans, as well as the team's form.

Brighton are playing for the first time in 10 days after enjoying a rare weekend off.

After thrashing Chelsea 3-0 at Amex Stadium on 21 April, manager Fabian Hurzeler gave his staff and players five days off before returning to training on Monday.

"It was about refreshing mentally and physically after a very intense game against Chelsea. We came back with a lot of energy, enthusiasm and positivity," Hurzeler said.

After travelling to Newcastle today, Brighton will face Wolves at home, Leeds away and Manchester United at home.
