    FT: Mexico 2-0 Ecuador

These are some scenes on the pitch after the whistle. You know when you see something you know is special and realise it in the moment? Yeah, this is that.

Mexico have got better and better through the four games they have played. They are so connected with these fans, the smiles are pure and the confidence is sky high.

    Gulp.

What a night and a great performance from the co hosts. The most disciplined, skilled, tenacious, so many things we can say about the deserving side. When a home side is playing like that, it's so hard to stop. They are going to be so difficult to play against in the round of 16, it will be a daunting task.

This is one of the best performances that I've seen form a Mexican side in a while.

That red sums up Ecuador's night. Mexico have been great sure, but this Ecuador side is so so poor

Mexico are through to the last 16 and will return to the Azteca on Sunday night to face either England or DR Congo.

Julian Quinones lashed their opening goal on the break and Raul Jimenez rifled a second nine minutes later as Mexico, powered by the energy of their partisan crowd, swept aside Ecuador in the first half.

They then sat back and soaked up plenty of pressure in the second to secure their first knockout win in nine attempts on a night for the ages in this grand cathedral of a football ground.

We had an hour's delay due to severe weather before the game, but wow, was it worth the wait.

Sunday should be even more spectacular.

Piero Hincapie can afford to get sent off, his team is going home.

  7. RED CARD - Hincapie (Ecuador)published at 90+5 mins

    Mexico 2-0 Ecuador

Pretty stupid, to be honest, especially given Miguel Almiron of Paraguay was made such an example of just a few days ago.

The Arsenal man can have no complaints as hes shown a straight red card after the VAR check.

Ecuador will finish the tournament with 10 men.

A fourth red card in Mexico City at this tournament.

Oh here we go... Piero Hincapie looks like he might be seeing red here.

He covered his mouth in a heated exchange with an opponent.

  9. YELLOW CARDpublished at 93 mins

    Mexico 2-0 Ecuador

Kendry Paez goes into the book for a hack on Orbelin Pineda, which draws huge cheers from the home fans as it wastes some more time.

I think the party started about five minutes ago. Every Ecuadorian ball that's getting crossed inside is being sent away.

The fans here know they've won. It's been controlled tempo and aggression that you'd expect from a home side.

If England meet Mexico in the next round, England should fly in the day of the match. Ecuador look a little slow in their shoes, and we know they had a rough night at the hotel.

It apparently also negates the impact of the altitude if you don't let your body acclimatise for too long, too. Sure we'll hear plenty about this the next few days, IFFFF England win this evening.

There's a hunger in the way that Mexico go about their game. Ecuador have not had the nails to carve them open.

Just for a second it looked like Mexico might put it to bed on the break as Santiago Gimenez drove forward before slotting through for Orbelin Pineda but Moises Caicedo is able to get back just in time and win the ball with a slightly clumsy tackle in the box.

Into seven added minutes. Ecuador's dream is fading.

It's all Ecuador in these closing stages, but they cannot find a way past the green wall, whether it's by going direct, straight, down the sides, or launching in a long throw or set-piece.

Ecuador have been pretty toothless for a while, it must be said, but Mexico are also making life very difficult for them.

You can't progress in this tournament if you don't have some firepower upfront. You can get all the stops in the world but if there's no one attacking, it's pointless.

If you don't defend well, you're likely to be punished and Mexico certainly wasted no time doing that in the first half. All they've had to do in the second half is get stops - they've hardly sent any green shirts forwards.

We've seen him score these before, but this time Moises Caicedo runs onto a bouncing ball just outside the box and fires in a bouncing low shot which is a couple of yards past Raul Rangel's right post.

Bit worrying from an England perspective that Mexico looked like the most irresistible attacking force known to man in the first half, and now look highly adept at a low block in the second.

Get this, they have faced just six shots on target across their four games in the tournament so far.

I hope Thomas Tuchel is already in bed asleep. If he's not then he might not get much sleep at all tonight after this.

  18. 'Ecuador have no magic'published at 04:45 BST

    Mexico 2-0 Ecuador

Ecuador have got lots of fresh legs but no magic.

Another poor cross in the box, it's just catching practice for Rangel out there.

So much hit and hope from Ecuador tonight, and plenty from Moises Caicedo, who lofts a hopeful ball into the Mexico box but it's meat and drink for keeper Raul Rangel.

  20. 'Mbappe wouldn't get a chance for Ecuador'published at 04:43 BST

    Mexico 2-0 Ecuador

The two proudest players in the first half have been taken off. Granted that nobody has had an impact in this second half.

You can have all the forwards you like on the pitch but unless you're going to gain some ground in the middle, there's no point. Kylian Mbappe could be playing in this Ecuadorian side right now and he wouldn't get a chance.
