Sheffield United sign ex-Wolves defender Doherty

Sheffield United have signed former Wolves defender Matt Doherty on a one-year deal.

The 34-year-old Republic of Ireland international left Wolves earlier this summer after a second spell with the club where he made a total of 389 appearances.

In addition to his time with Wolves, Doherty also spent three seasons with Tottenham Hotspur and had a short spell in La Liga with Atletico Madrid.

"I'm backing the manager to get the club back into the Premier League and I'm guessing that is the goal for everyone at the end of the day," he told the club website., external

"I believe in him and what he's saying to me, and I know he'll believe in his players.

"I've got friends who have played here - Enda Stevens, John Egan, Conor Coady - they've all told me how good a place this is to play and I know that too, I know the atmosphere can be incredible."

Doherty, who has won 50 international caps, joined Wolves as an 18-year-old in 2010 from Bohemians for £75,000.

He went on to become a club legend, helping them win the League One title in 2013-14 and then the Championship title in 2017-18 during his first spell with the club before he rejoined them in 2023.
