Maybe you could add teams like Ireland and Scotland to the County Championship in a three tier league. This would give them regular First Class action and still have a schedule to play white ball games, when the Blast and The Hundred are on,

  5. Ire 88-4published at 32.5

Obviously Ireland are without some key players and NZ are a very good team but what will Ireland learn from this single test? Test cricket is about 3/4/5 Test series. A single Test match tells you very little, especially when it is followed by T20s (not against NZ, I should add) Ireland are only going to improve by playing more of these games. Sort it out ICC!

  8. Ire 84-4published at 31 overs

Just 19 runs in over an hour of cricket as New Zealand keep the pressure on Ireland's batters.

One run from Ben Sears' over.

  9. Ire 83-4published at 30 overs

A leg bye and a leg-before appeal from that Zak Foulkes over.

Ireland can't expect to compete at this level when their best players are not playing any red ball cricket, other than the inter-squad warm up game last week. Cricket Ireland need to provide a robust red ball pathway to give players a chance to develop in this format.

For Ireland, we are just happy to be here playing. We have been starved of top-class cricket for years. Yesterday, both men and women played on the same day. This is our path to reach the upper echelons of world cricket, rather than short 20/20, formats which don't test or challenge your cricketing abilities.

  15. Ire 75-4published at 26 overs

Two off the over but Blair Tickner has his first wicket of the day and third of the innings.

    Tector c Latham b Tickner 2 (Ire 75-4)

Harry Tector's nervy and brief stay ends as he fends a lifting Blair Tickner ball to Tom Latham at second slip.

Not the start Ireland wanted or needed.

  17. Ire 73-3published at 25 overs

A fourth straight maiden for Nathan Smith, who also picked up the wicket of Tom Mayes.

It's slow stuff this morning with just eight runs scored in the first 35 minutes.

  18. Ire 73-3published at 24 overs

Harry Tector swings the bat but luckily misses as the ball from Blair Tickner flies to the keeper.

Tector looks uncomfortable out there and needs to settle quickly - it's another maiden over

  19. Ire 73-3published at 23 overs

It's tense stuff out there - Nathan Smith seems to threaten with each delivery but Doheny is up to the task as another maiden is clocked up.

  20. Ire 73-3published at 22 overs

Stephen Doheny, who is joined in the middle by Harry Tector, drives down to long-on for three runs off Blair Tickner.

It's a testing start for Tector but he survives.
