  1. drinks break

    Drinks - Pak 81-2published at 14:50 BST

Time for drinks! Pakistan will be very content with the first hour after the rain delay/lunch. From 23-2 after 9.4 overs, they've added 58 in 14.2 overs.

Abdullah Shafique (40 off 66) is closing in on a half-century but has had a few scares against Josh Tongue.

  2. Pak 81-2published at 24 overs

    Shafique 40 (66), Imam-ul-Haq 33 (57)

Ben Duckett freezes with his hands above his head. He can't quite believe that Josh Tongue has missed both Abdullah Shafique's edge and his off-stump. Pace and nip. Lovely.

Shafique, who began the over with two, finishes it with back-to-back boundaries. Playing off his pads for the first one and driving through mid-on for the second.

Decent patch of play from England. As soon as Tongue came in beside Archer, they've looked much better.

Not feeling confident about Dan Lawrence's spin, Russell?

    A leg-bye is added to Pakistan's tally.

Is there a world where Jacob Bethell becomes the spinning all-rounder? His spin needs work but it hasn't looked any worse than the current bunch of spin options.

Just 0.6° of swing seen so far today, the equal lowest ever seen by this point in the first innings at Headingley. In a post Anderson and Woakes era, with England's attack evolving more to line/seam bowlers, expect to see lower new-ball swing numbers going forward.

  7. Pak 70-2published at 22 overs

Josh Tongue is looking sharp, angling a delivery into Abdullah Shafique's body. The ball slams into his thigh but too high for lbw.

That's twice now he's troubled Shafique having beaten his bat in his previous over.

Shafique keeps the strike with a single off the final ball of the over.

  8. Pak 69-2published at 21 overs

Lively fielding from Dan Lawrence - a running one-handed pick up before nailing the stumps with his flick. Alas, Abdullah Shafique is comfortably home as Pakistan nick a quick single.

A better over from Jofra Archer.

Ollie Robinson to be the highest wicket-taker in next summer’s Ashes?

Let's put it to a vote. Thumbs up if you agree with Sam's prediction. Thumbs down if you don't.

Josh Tongue enters the attack and brings a bit of fizz, beating Abdullah Shafique's outside edge. Oooooh.

    Two singles, four dots.

  11. Warwickshire sign Weatheraldpublished at 14:28 BST

Warwickshire have announced the signing of Australian opening batter Jake Weatherald for the 2027 season.

Having been dropped from the Australia Test side following their shock nine-wicket loss to Bangladesh in Darwin, the chances of Weatherald making the Ashes squad next summer appear slim.

However, after a spell at Leicestershire at the beginning of this season, he will be back in the County Championship - and on hand should the Aussies require an opening batter at short notice - next year.

Weatherald featured in the winter's Ashes series in Australia but struggled, making only one half-century as he averaged 22.33 across 10 innings.

That was an expensive over for Jofra Archer, he went searching a little bit there but was punished.

  14. Pak 66-2published at 19 overs

Hmmmm, it's really not clicking for Jofra Archer today.

He whizzes down a mid-over 87mph rocket, full as you like, but his length is otherwise a bit squiffy. Abdullah Shafique and Imam-ul-Haq each pick up boundaries with delightful drives.

Only a determined chase from Ollie Robinson, flicking the ball away from the rope, denies Pakistan a third four.

This shows where the ball pitched for all of Imam-ul-Haq's dismissals in Test cricket in the last two years - there's a definite area for the bowlers to target.

  17. Pak 54-2published at 18 overs

Too short from Gus Atkinson and cut elegantly through point by the bespectacled Imam-ul-Haq for four. 50 up for Pakistan, who were 6-2 earlier today.

At the end of the over, Joe Root has a lengthy chinwag with Harry Brook.

Surely Joe Root isn’t already doing what he used to do… just let games drift a little and over bowl his favourites. Early days I suppose.

    Rae R, Nottingham

We're only 17 overs in, Rae - and we've had a lengthy rain delay as well! Give the man a chance...

Maiden for Jofra Archer - his third of the day but he's yet to really threaten the Pakistan batters.
