There is still some time to go and there are beautiful blue skies above.

England need to take these last three wickets - they need to be batting this evening.

  2. Aus 446-7published at 109 overs

I’m following from Vietnam and hoping the Aussies bury this English side. They were lucky in Melbourne and it should be 5-0. 4-1 is flattering for England. Only Joe Root would be an automatic selection for the Australian side. Ben Stokes is a wonderful player, but very poor tactically.

Jacob Bethell decides to toss a few up wide of off stump to both Beau Webster and Steve Smith but neither take the bait.

    Thanks, Elizabeth.

I wonder, after a long stint in the field, whether England's top order would rather Australia were not bowled out in the remaining hour or so.

A welcome breakthrough for England but Steve Smith is looking good on 95 and Beau Webster can bat. A sizeable Australia lead is still on the cards.

To take you through the remainder of day three, it's Timothy Abraham.

I am not sure what Cameron Green was trying to do there. He did not get to the ball enough to get hold of it and he is frustrated with himself.

An important wicket for England - Australia were turning the knife.

Cameron Green is furious with himself. A well-judged catch by Ben Duckett.

    Green was looking solid.

Well, that came out of nowhere.

Cameron Green, pulling, holes out to Ben Duckett in the deep and slams his bat into the ground in frustration. An opportunity for a big score goes begging for a player under pressure.

    Carse has his third wicket.

This pitch is holding together well. I thought there would be more natural variation but at the moment it looks a good wicket still.

Jacob Bethell sends down his 10th over and concedes two runs.

One iffy 11-run over aside, it's been a decent effort from him with the ball.

Oh Ian, if only the inimitable Mike Peter was at the helm today. You two could have compared 5k times and talked about running club memberships.

I, however, don't run. I'd rather stick with Graham and his 02:00 GMT roast potatoes.

Steve Smith takes a single to move onto 92 (152).

Got up extra early to go for my 5k run before work to listen to England in the cricket. I should’ve known better on this tour. It’s -4 in Hull as I set off.

Just under 90 minutes to go on day three. Australia lead by 48 runs.

What will it be by the end of the day? 100? 120?

Guardian's Barney Ronay: England came to Australia talking up the "battery" of fast bowlers. They're leaving it with a battery of part-time spinners.

  16. Aus 429-6published at 103 overs

Brydon Carse returns to the attack with a maiden to Cameron Green. Only his second.

Ben Stokes and Josh Tongue have done well to keep it to three an over. But Brydon Carse and Matthew Potts have not helped England today.

Steve Smith is into the 90s, pulling Jacob Bethell behind square for four. The spinner puts his hands to his head.

A fairly big chance that 'Chris' on the beach at 04:52 is my mate, looks like his other half has had enough of England’s terrible fielding. Catches win matches she always tells us. Currently watching in bed, no beach for me.

Ben Stokes is down on his haunches. He looks cooked.

He has given his all but it looks like he has had enough now.
