The weather has done its best to throw a spanner in the works, but we've had some top action on day one nonetheless.

You can't take anything away from how well Zak Crawley and ben Compton have played, but the Northants bowlers just didn't get it right.
If you'd have offered Kent 154-0 at the close when they were put in to bat in gloomy conditions at 4.15pm they'd have more than snapped your hand off.
Northants have not really hit their straps in that session.

After rain washed out the first two sessions, Kent openers Zak Crawley and Ben Compton have made up for lost time with an unbroken 154-run stand in the evening session.
Crawley has played with patience and punished the bad ball against an errant attack to close on 82, while Compton will resume on 51.
Other than a Nathan McSweeney drop in the slips and the odd moment from Ben Sanderson, Northamptonshire have struggled to create many problems.
No wickets from 36 overs having put the visitors into bat. Kent will be delighted.

A flick into the legside off Calvin Harrison brings two and that's fifty for Ben Compton in the final over of day one.
He's played something of a supporting role to Zak Crawley.
But it's of no less value as he brings up his third Championship half-century of the campaign off 108 balls.

Surrey rolled for 183. Three wickets each for Zaman Akhter and Sam Cook after Essex won the toss.
The hosts then lost Paul Walter before the early close and have plenty of work to try and get a lead tomorrow.

As a Glamorgan fan, on a difficult pitch to bat on, don’t think I’m particularly a fan of Baker being jettisoned in for Hampshire…

I don't want to sound like a bitter Glamorgan supporter, but it's bonkers that a bowler [Baker] can be parachuted in to replace another bowler part-way through the day after being released by England.

Spin from both ends to complete the day as Yuzi Chahal comes back for a second spell.
A single apiece brings Ben Compton to 46 and Zak Crawley to 81.
Crawley sweeps Calvin Harrison and scampers a single which brings up the 150 opening stand, off 205 balls.

A sudden rush of cloud cover has the umpires conferring over the light and the players are going off.
Hants captain Ben Brown does not want to go but someone in the groundsman's hut has decided Glam are best off the pitch and momentarily switched the floodlights off.
They are back on (the floodights not the players) and the umpires are hanging around for the optics but that looks likely to be that.
If that is it the bowlers have had the best of conditions with Hants skittled for 162, Mir Hamza with 3-39 and Zain ul-Hassan 3-33 and Jake Lehmann 51 not out.
In reply only Ben Kellaway (53) and Colin Ingram (32) withstood the onslaught. Sonny Baker (2-3), Eddie Jack (2-25) and Kyle Abbott (3-23) all shone.

As the light is fading around the country there is pleasant if intermittent late afternoon sunshine in Cardiff.
There have been 17 wickets already which give this game every chance of a result even with a dodgy weather forecast.
Friday, Saturday and Sunday do not look dry but given we are almost up to a one innings shootout, they won't need three days from here.
Kyle Abbott, who already had 3-23, has replaced James Fuller and starts back with a maiden.

Still 14 overs left in the day but they’re off for the light in CM2.

Ben Sanderson in again and Zak Crawley continues on his merry way with a cracking shot through the covers for four more.
A half-volley outside off stump is then punched through the offside for a second boundary of the over as the Kent opener glides to 79.
Leg spinner Calvin Harrison is brought in as Luke Procter searches for a way to halt the momentum.

England paceman Sonny Baker has tipped the game back Hampshire’s way with a sensational entrance after making his way from Lord’s where he was released from Test duties.
He beat Chris Cooke with his first two balls and bowled him with his third, then removed Glamorgan’s established batter Ben Kellaway caught behind with the final ball of the over.
Kellaway’s 57 looked about to give the hosts the chance of a first-innings lead.
It’s been a bowler-friendly day in often humid conditions with the pitch doing just enough.
Sussex 77-2 v Somerset 202
A lively opening day at Hove where Somerset, sent in under laden skies, were reduced to 96-5 before a stand of 91 between Tom Abell and Craig Overton.
But then Tom Clark took two wickets in two balls and Henry Crocombe finished the innings off with a hat-trick as Somerset lost 5-1 in six overs. Crocombe returned 5-56.
Sussex have been steady in reply and will come back tomorrow with Tom Clark on 45 and Charlie Tear on 10.
Lots to do still but a great chance for the hosts to take charge in a game they probably need to win to keep their title hopes alive.

It's not talking for the Northamptonshire attack, but the umpires toss it back. Play on.

As a member of Surrey I have to admit I am resigned to their relegation. They've given up and putting up second rate sides. Mixture of hubris, bad planning and worse coaching. And of course better opponents

More pertinently, how good are the bowlers who were picked for Lord's? He looks a cut above, certainly in terms of pace.
That was rapid, gaining speed off the pitch, and racing through the defences of the well-set Ben Kellaway.
