Wildlife Map Fish and Invertebrates Bird
The Atlantic salmon is a very graceful fish that can live up to 6 years and is widespread throughout Scottish rivers.

   
Latin Name: Salmo salar

Gaelic Name: Bradan.
 

Statistics: Length 100-150cm, weight 1.8-9.1kg.

Physical Description: The head is relatively small and pointed with teeth on both jaws. In colour, the salmon has bright silver sides and belly. The back varies with age from brown to blue-black, and the sides, back and head are marked with black, cross-shaped spots.
       
Scottish Distribution: Widespread.

Habitat: Salmon hatch and spawn in fresh water, while much of the juvenile and adult stages are spent at sea.

Diet: Salmon undergo a range of physiological changes at sea and eat voraciously, gaining considerable weight. Their sea diet includes prawn, squid and caplin.
