Well, it’s almost time for us to be leaving yet another place. But there’s still time for plenty more! We went for a spot of bird watching to Sanday on Sunday (or was it to Sunday on Sanday …. ho-ho-ho!!)

I think birds are just such incredible creatures. A little bird song never fails to lift my spirit! Sanday is a great location for seeing some great birds during the migration season. I’ve always thought that bird watching is nature’s television! I said so to Munro, and he looked at me as if I was crazy! But I spotted no fewer than 50 different types of bird! Nothing like that sort of variety on the television!

There’s an air service that jumps from island to island in Orkney. We used it a little, and took the shortest flight in the world, under two minutes from Westray to Papa Westray! Still, that was too long for me! I may like climbing, but I most definitely like my feet to be firmly on the ground! Birds fly, Seanair doesn’t!

We’ve still got a good bit of touring to do, and not much time left in which to do it, so I probably won’t have time to write any more this month. Sin e an-dràsta!

Halò a-rithist! I spent this weekend at a Mountain Leadership/Outdoor survival course. You might think that I know all there is to know about the outdoors, and I do know a lot even if I say so myself, but you can never know enough! And as it turns out, there was plenty even for an old veteran of the wilderness like myself!

Things have certainly changed since my day! I remember when I used to go camping. I would often sleep under the stars with nothing but a blanket between me and the elements! But I learnt that there are many new materials and pieces of equipment available now that make camping a lot more comfortable. I just think the youngsters today should be warned not to get too comfy out there! That’s when they make mistakes.

Although I’m not one to hide from the outdoor life, I will admit I thought that the tougher conditions were beyond me now. But it turns out there’s nothing for me to be worrying about at all, with wind-proof tents and thermal sleeping bags! All I need to put up with now is Brochan’s barking!

Dè tha dol? We’re up in Orkney this month. It’s famous for its strong winds and harsh storms. There’s certainly plenty of fresh air to fill the lungs! There aren’t that many hills to climb, since Orkney is very flat, but for once I don’t think that is going to bother me! There’s so much to do here, and a great deal of it is outdoors, that I shouldn’t grow restless. And with over 50 islands to visit, we should be kept well occupied.

Tomorrow is the last day of the science festival. It’s definitely been interesting, learning more about the way the world works. It’s strange to think that so many things we do without thinking, like just getting in a car, are actually very damaging. It’s really eye-opening! I shall take up the cause with vigour to spread the word!

Le deagh dhùrachdan,

Seanair
