Melodaidh Brochan

TUESDAY, MAY 15, 2007

The basket making is all going very … erm …. well. Munro has made a basket the shape of an old potato, I would guess.

Melodaidh has made a love heart-shaped basket, the young romantic that she is. Morag has made a basket for holding flowers (so let’s hope Seanair buys her some) and the very man himself has made a basket big enough to put his walking boots in at the end of a day walking on the hill!

Some our best loved characters have struggled with this fine craft and I think they thought it was going to be a lot easier than it is. Morag, of course, loves it as it hasn’t involved any physical exercise yet but that could all change at any given moment! She is actually very good at it and is quite pleased that she has finally found something that she is better at than Melodaidh - of course, Melodaidh is fiercely competing to get better than Morag: I’ll never understand women!

Did you know that basket weaving is a craft nearly as old as human civilisation itself? Ah yes, something that is a little bit older than me ;)

I hope they enjoy relaxing for the moment as I have a lot in store for them next month: it won’t be quite so sedate!

Tìoraidh an-dràsta!

Aidh, aidh! Ciamar a tha sibh uile an t-seachdain seo? Tha mise glè mhath agus làn spòrs agus mì-mhodh mar as àbhaist! Càite bheil sinn am mìos seo, ma-tha? Uill, tha sinn ann an Inbhir Pheofharain.

Aye aye! How are you all this week? I’m very good and up to my usual fun and tricks. Where are we this month then? Well we’re in Dingwall!

Here we are on the wonderful Brahan Estate near Dingwall, which is a magical place altogether; and you know I love all things magical ;) This is where the infamous Coinneach Odhar, or Brahan Seer as he was known, used to work. I remember Coinneach very well, what an interesting man he was. He was the Scottish equivalent of Nostradamus and foretold many an event in the Highlands through the years.

Indeed it was on this very estate that he predicted the fall of the Clan MacKenzie and sure enough it happened! I’m sure he also foretold that one day a little Fachan called Dwelly would be crowned “King of the Highlands”.

I wonder if I should try to predict what will happen with our valiant explorers this month…. give me a moment now… mmm … yes, I’m getting something…

Ah yes! I predict that by the end of this year … Morag will become the new face of Gaelic singing, Melodaidh will have fallen head over heals in love with a Highland crofter, Munro Jnr will smile, Seanair will become an adrenaline junkie, snowboarding, skiing and white water rafting every weekend and finally, Brochan will win Crufts!

Anyway enough of that, I better go and check on the motley crew and see how they’re getting on with their latest task: Basket Making! I can just see Munro Jnr’s face now….ho ho ho!

Mar sin leibh,

Dwelly
