Melodaidh Brochan

THURSDAY, JULY 19, 2007

Sin sibh a-rithist!

Tha sinne an seo a’ cumail gu math trang, is tha mi cinnteach gu bheil ar caraidean glè sgìth!

We’ve been adventuring all over the Outer Hebrides, and have been greatly enjoying our time! They’ve discovered a lot about the area. They climbed “An Cliseam,” the highest point in the Western Isles. I would probably have to have found a doctor for Seanair, if he’d passed up the opportunity for a bit of hill walking!

They also went to some museums and galleries, where they learnt a lot about the local arts and crafts. Morag and Melodaidh were very happy with the visit to the ruin of the house where Flora Macdonald was born, at Milton in South Uist. I can remember her well! She was a lovely girl, and so brave! Quite like a younger Morag, although don’t tell her I told you that!

They spent last weekend at the Hebridean Celtic Festival. Morag and Seanair might have had to leave a bit earlier in the evening than the younger ones, but they all had a good time. I’m not sure Munro Jr was too keen with all the attention Melodaidh was giving Seth Lakeman! Perhaps Munro should learn to play the guitar himself. Who knows?

In a couple of days they’re off to the Lewis Highland Games! The games are one of my favourite Highland traditions! I can still remember the very first Highland Games, all those years ago. What an event! I’ve been to almost every single Games since, and I’m sure the Lewis Games on Saturday will be just as good as any I’ve seen before!

After that, I’m going to make sure they all see the Standing Stones at Callanish! Can you believe that Munro Jr hadn’t even heard of them? Everyone’s heard of Stonehenge, but no one can tell you anything about the Standing Stones of the Western Isles! To think, all the effort I put into them… Anyway, plenty more to be getting on with here!

Sin e an-dràsta!

Fàilte! Ciamar a tha sibh uile? Tha cùisean a’ dol gu math an seo. Tha sinn a-nis ann an Leòdhas, anns na h-Eileanan Siar! ’S ann air bàt’-aiseig mòr a thàinig sinn, is tha an sgioba deiseil airson rudan ùra fhaicinn! Mar as àbhaist, chan eil mise ach ri fealla-dhà!

We’re now more than halfway through the year, and we’re going to be spending July on the Isle of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides! Lewis is actually only a part of the whole island – because it is joined onto the Isle of Harris. I imagine that will confuse Brochan endlessly! Ho ho ho!

They have a lot to look forward to this month. The Hebridean Celtic Festival starts in a little over a week, and the Lewis Highland Games are on shortly after that. When you add in all the sightseeing, touring, and keeping Seanair quiet with walks (I thought it was Brochan who was meant to need walks? Ho ho!), there won’t be much time for rest!

Brochan seems to be enjoying himself, so I’m hoping that he will leave me alone for a while. Perhaps some of the good manners the Outer Hebrides are famous for will rub off on him and I’ll get some peace and quiet!

Morag and Melodaidh are in for a real treat, with lots of Gaelic culture and history to soak up. There’s also the Hebridean Celtic festival to distract everyone, and then the Lewis Highland games just a few days afterwards! It’s definitely going to be all go for this lot for a while!

There are also the famous “Callanish Standing Stones” to visit. I’m sure that they’ll be wondering how such large stones were moved around, 4000 years ago! Well, I won’t ruin the mystery for them!

Co-dhiù, ’s fheàrr dhomh falbh. I’m sure they’ll need me before too long!

Mar sin leibh!
