Charles Thomas's Story

Great Uncle Charles volunteered for duty at the start of the war

He was promoted to Serjeant in March 1915, and was injured in September the same year at Loos. In June 1917, he was awarded the Military Medal for "special work during Easter Week" of 1917. I believe his unit was stationed near Arras at this time. Sadly, Charles died on October 12th 1917, aged 24, and is buried at Poelcapelle British Cemetary in Belgium.

Uncle Charles was well known locally in athletic circles, and was an accomplished footballer playing for the Parish Church team, as well as Lancaster Town FC (now Lancaster City FC) in the half-back and full-back positions.
He had 3 brothers who were also in the army during the war.
