Walter's Story

I remember my father telling me that during part of the First World War he rode between the lines on a horse, and afterwards on a motor bike, leaning well over, like the Pony Express in the Wild West of America, laying the telephone wires between the trenches. I never appreciated it at the time but I do now and he came through relatively unscathed. Afterwards he was sent out to Macedonia where he contracted malaria. I remember him suffering bouts of the residue of this even into old age. I will always remember him as a true gentleman.
