Ernest's Story

Report from comrade who returned; Pte Cooper volunteered to collect water dixies from area known to be covered by snipers. The 1st Battn was in support trenches just behind the front line, (supporting a Battn from the Rifle Brigade). Grandad Cooper was killed by sniper fire on Boxing Day 1917 in Ypres, the only member of 1st Battn killed during December 1917. His name is preserved on the Memorial to the Missing at Tyne Cot. It is presumed he was initially buried but then his grave was obliterated by shell-fire.

Pte. Cooper was very unlucky, it was a relatively quiet time for the 'old stubborns'. What company did he serve in? My grandfather was in C company.
