Rusell's Story
For King and Empire - Services Remembered
On 9th January 1915 Russell Walter Victor Byford enlisted at Colchester Town Hall and took the King's shilling. He joined the Essex Regiment and became 16902 private Byford. He was dispatched to France and fought at the Battle of the Somme, where he was wounded and had his left arm amputated. Subsequently, he received campaign medals and the silver badge given to all wounded soldiers. He served for two years and fifty-four days, and was discharged on 3rd March 1917. When he returned to England he went to the Brighton hospital for wounded soldiers and upon recovery returned home to Colchester.
