"This painting was inspired entirely by Radio 4 and World Service News. On a Friday evening towards the end of October 1989 they broadcast that Czechoslovakians, gathered in Wenceslas Square to protest against oppression, were brutally dispersed, with many injured and imprisoned; a dark night for Europe. Three nights later hearts were lifted. A brave crowd, 30,000 strong, had amassed again, everyone holding lighted candles, not knowing if they were to be beaten, even killed. I grabbed a canvas, lit a candle and painted, hoping that somehow my energy would support their courage. Two weeks later the Berlin Wall fell."
